Parklet Replacement Done

Now how will the sidewalk dining establishments ruin it with carnival lights, patio heaters and wind blocks?

Among the improvements, wooden parklets were removed; the intersection was excavated and repaved; curbs, gutters, sidewalks, crosswalks, and curb ramps were reconstructed and the sidewalks were widened.

For safety, new metal picket fencing for outdoor seating was installed, trees were added, light poles and street signs were relocated, and pavement markings were updated.

Disabled Aquarium Visitor Cannot Use Restroom, Can Sue

Hard to believe in this day and age, but even with help from a fish prison guard could not access the facilities.

Aquarium Kalisas

Gloria Jean Kish, from Alameda, said she and her sister were visiting the aquarium’s living kelp forest and jellyfish exhibits on July 24, 2024, when she said she encountered “significant challenges” in finding a bathroom that could accommodate disabled people.
“The ADA-accessible restroom they found in the middle of the facility was too narrow for Kish’s wheelchair and prevented her from entering,” according to the complaint filed Jan. 9 in Monterey County Superior Court. “Despite attempting to access three different restrooms, none were suitable for wheelchair use.”
She also suggested that the restroom incident contributed to medical issues, including a urinary tract infection and a permanent catheter, and that she’s been in “bed most of the time since the accident.’
She alleges violation of state laws that are intended to protect disabled people and is asking a judge to order the aquarium to comply with standards required in the Americans with Disabilities Act. She is seeking an  unspecified amount in monetary damages exceeding $35,000.

No Cakewalk For Council Seat

Not even a coin flip to fill resigning Debbie Beck’s chair.

The city’s charter allows for the mayor to choose a new councilmember, but newly elected Mayor Nick Smith wisely declined, instead saying that he wanted a majority of the council to choose from a field of applicants.

The applicants include some with previous city experience, including two current members of the Planning Commission (Ross Davison and Donald Murphy), a former councilmember (Cynthia Garfield), the chair of the P.G. Architectural Review Board (Anna Bornstein) and a member of the Economic Development Commission (Michael Gibbs).

The remaining three citizens who applied include a man with an extensive background in the federal government (Melvin Dubee), an entrepreneur with a law degree (Jennifer Kelly) and a software engineer and community volunteer deeply concerned about climate change (Eugene Loh).

Investigators identified Jeremy Hinton as her attacker, he said, and police found him driving on Highway 68 near York Road, pulled him over and arrested him at gunpoint.

. . as much as the fun Crosby crowds did.

Welcome To Bings Pro Am

“Advance bookings for the AT&T week are down as compared to this time last year — potentially as much as 20 percent,” Amy Herzog, executive director of tourism group Visit Carmel, said. “And, when compared to the previous year — before the tournament format changed — bookings are down even more.”
Now organized to attract more devoted golf fans, this year’s tournament is set for Jan. 27-Feb. 2. It will bring 80 PGA pros, many of them highly ranked, and 80 amateurs to compete on the Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill courses

“The AT&T golf tournament has lost its luster compared to the Crosby Pro-Am for several reasons,” Hofsas House hotel owner Carrie Theis said. “The AT&T golf crowd was definitely here for the celebrities, compared to the U.S. Open spectators who are more devoted golf enthusiasts. “

Caledonia bite reported to be a “terrier mix”, most likely a pit bull.

On Dec. 23, the Swedish tourist, who has not been identified, was jogging on a sidewalk on the 100 block of Caledonia Avenue when a dog, which was leashed, bit her, according to her friend, who detailed the attack in a social media post last week. “She needed an ambulance ride to the emergency room to receive almost two dozen stitches and emergency care for blood loss,” LB Burnett reported the day of the attack.

Also on Dec. 23, but a few hours later, another dog bite occurred on the 200 block of Grove Acre, but not as severe as the first. “A border collie was able to get out of an apartment window and bite the victim, who was walking her dogs by the apartment,” Anderson explained. “The victim was treated by the fire department and released.

Tourist Still Missing After Being Swept Off Rocks

Getting out on the rocks in heavy waves is not smart.

Sunset Waves 2

a tourist from China in his 70s, was with family members when he disappeared about 2 p.m. after climbing onto some rocks between Spanish Bay and Bird Rock. Drones, divers and a helicopter were deployed just after he went missing, but he wasn’t found
“He was taking a photo and was swept off the rocks by a wave,” Silveira told The Pine Cone Thursday. The Chinese man was wearing jeans and a hooded sweatshirt at the time of the mishap. “He had flown in from China very recently to visit family, who live in the San Francisco Bay area, and they came down to see the big waves and unfortunately he was washed away,” Silveira said.

So Cal Consultants Hired To Roll Up Weed Permits

City manager Matt Mogensen hired the consultants for $24K. Two years sales taxes on PG Weed might cover the fee, eh?

Butterfly Weed

The initial term of the contract with HdL is expected to be less than $24,000 through December 2026. “Consultant fees to the city will only be charged for the hours necessary to finalize the application process and establish the user fees,” according to a report by Mogensen presented to the council at its Dec. 18 meeting.
“The user fees will cover all other costs associated with the consultant’s work and will be charged to the applicant,” the report said. After voter approval of a pot shop, the council directed city officials to create a licensing program to allow the operation of a retail storefront. A cannabis business must first obtain a license to operate from the city before getting a use permit.

Citizens Inge Lorentzen Daumer and Mike Gibbs opposed hiring HdL, with Gibbs, a member of the city’s Economic Development Commission, saying he believed the company’s services were “particularly poor,” while Daumer said she had “never been a fan” of the consulting firm. The city council did not entertain their concerns.

P.G. Style Remodel On Cannery Row Questioned

One person’s “repair and maintenance” is another’s teardown and replace.

Since 2018, a developer has been seeking permission to renovate a rundown concrete building at 300 Cannery Row to build eight condominiums and retail and commercial space. While the City of Monterey approved a permit for the project, staffers at the California Coastal Commission recommended that the 12-member commission deny applicant The 300 LLC a development permit.
