Don’t Call It East Salinas

Call it Alisal, the New Alisal or El Nuevo Alisal de Salinas — but don’t call it east Salinas.

That term no longer is appropriate to describe the cluster of neighborhoods that make up roughly one-third of the city, generally east of Highway 101 and south of Constitution Boulevard, community leaders say.

They want to replace the moniker, which they say has come to evoke images of crime and negative racial and socio-economic stereotypes on the eastern side of Salinas, with a term free of any damaging stigma.

What ever it’s called will still be known as the ‘bad side of town’. Better to clean up the filth and criminals. Make “East Salinas” a name to associate with working families that take pride in their homes.

KAZU Knocked Off Air – Again

A ruptured water heater forced the shutdown of radio station KAZU early this morning, said the station’s general manager.

The water heater was located directly above the station’s master control and broadcast operations center and the water poured directly on the equipment, destroying some of it.

KAZU has had a run of bad luck, after a fire in downtown PG, and this is the second flood at the present location. Perhaps the Chamber Of Commerce can raise some funds to buy KAZU a couple of umbrellas to put over the control board.

Salinas Election Fallout – Sour Grapes?

Nearly a week after several Salinas City Council members failed to show up for a swearing-in ceremony for the new mayor and council members, the full body met Monday to formalize what voters decided in November.

It led to accusations of sour grapes considering the three members absent – Maria Giuriato, Robert Ocampo and Sergio Sanchez – did not support candidate Donohue’s mayoral bid. Giuriato ran against him, leaving open the council seat Villegas will now fill.

Robert Ocampo was once questioned by police at a prostitution stakeout

Newcomer Challenges Sham Farr

As one letter from the editor puts it, an empty chair would be preferable to Sam The Sham

With one candidate vanished from the 17th District House of Representatives race, two are still in the running for the position in November.
U.S. Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, who has held the seat since 1993, faces newcomer Jeff Taylor, a last-minute Republican write-in candidate who supplants Anthony De Maio in next Tuesday’s election. De Maio, a finance entrepreneur whose name remains on the ballot, did not return repeated calls for comment.

If It Rolls Downhill, Our Man Sam The Sham Is All Over It

And wants more tax dollars to research it.

Farr Piggy

To prevent future E. coli outbreaks linked to leafy greens, U.S. Rep. Sam Farr said Friday he will request $6 million in federal funds for food-safety research.

Farr’s comments followed a closed-door meeting of about 75 Salinas-area growers, agricultural officials and lawmakers who discussed potential strategies for making local produce safer and restoring the confidence of consumers in the wake of the nationwide E. coli outbreak.

Yep, throw more taxpayer money at it Sam, that’s your shtick. What about making the growers and sellers of contaminated food pay for the study? Here, I’ll do it for free:
E. coli is poop. Animals are pooping or spreading poop in fields. Keep animals out, or clean the food before selling it. No charge, Sam. Now get your grubby hands off my wallet.

Pebble Beach Worker Killed In Work Accident

An employee of the Pebble Beach Co. died after a workplace accident Friday, the Monterey County Coroner’s Office reported.

Cristobal Reynoso, 45, was working on a large lawn mower in the company’s maintenance shop at 7:25 a.m. when a 500-pound “blade wing” fell on top of him, causing fatal head injuries, the coroner said.

Authorities said Reynoso failed to lock the mower’s blade before it fell. He was taken to Community Hospital, where he died in the emergency room.

Teen Car Thief Crashes & Burns

Pacific Grove police say they pulled a 16-year-old Marina boy out of a burning vehicle that he crashed early this morning while fleeing officers.

The car crashed through a guard-rail along Recreation Trail and continued over a rock edge near Ocean View Boulevard and Fountain Avenue, officers said.

The teen received minor injuries and was booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of auto theft, evading a peace officer, driving under the influence and driving without a license.
