As the city of Pacific Grove figures out how to end its PERS contract, recruit a new city manager and squeeze water from concrete, freshly minted Councilwoman Carmelita Garcia is starting her term with a whinny. On the heels of her Dec. 3 swearing-in, she asked City Attorney David Laredo to expand residents’ rights to keep chickens, ponies and monkeys.

Gary Ozuna, owner of the Ice Cream Shoppe in Pacific Grove, says he has been losing his appetite and sleep because of anxiety stemming from publicity over what he considers “a private conversation that happened two months ago” in his business.
Signs in his window advertise a free ice cream cone for servicemen and women, and that military personnel are welcome.
Since the incident, Ozuna said, he has seen a lot of students from DLI come through the door and his business has doubled.
Soldier Darrick Williams, who was unavailable for comment Monday, told the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce that he and his wife walked into the Ice Cream Shoppe — formerly known as Rocky Coast Ice Cream — on Lighthouse Avenue but decided to leave when they noticed the ice cream was over their budget.
As they were leaving, Williams was allegedly told by the store’s owner that he wouldn’t serve soldiers at his business, and the two exchanged words, Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar told KSBW Action News 8.
“He was referring to the fact that this guy is a soldier and this specific owner has anti-war, anti-Bush sentiments and these have been expressed in the location,” Ammar said.
The incident has spurred an uproar, with some residents writing letters to the editors of local newspapers and others boycotting all Pacific Grove restaurants until the location of the dispute was revealed.
The Chamber of Commerce said that pro DLI groups are planning to boycott the ice cream shop next week.

An employee was arrested Saturday on suspicion of stealing $1,800 from a McDonald’s restaurant in Pacific Grove business, police said.
Police said Veronica Antoinette Smith, 28, was taken into custody after police observed her driving in the city of Seaside.

Considerable damage was done to the boxes in both locations. An estimated $50 to $200 was missing from each box.

Thief working the Works: To the sticky fingered individual who lifted a gorgeous painting from the walls of the Works art gallery in Pacific Grove, I offer my most sincere feelings of pity, as you are obviously a pathetic person. As much as this world needs compassion right now, I really can’t feel anything for you but objective anger. Shame on you, you thief and loser.

Give it back: I join Misty Dawn, who wrote to report the theft of a painting from The Works gallery, in saying, “Shame on you” to the thief.
The Pacific Grove Art Center was also struck by a sneak thief who stole an exquisite needlepoint tote bag from a display by one of the studio artists. The incident was a personal violation against the artist.
In addition to the expense of materials, hundreds of hours of work were involved in creating this beautiful piece, which was displayed for the enjoyment of others. How could anyone possibly enjoy something that was stolen from the artist, on display at a nonprofit center, right before Christmas? This petty criminal deserves a lump of coal in his or her stocking.

A soldier at the Presidio of Monterey got a taste of that attitude on Veterans Day in Pacific Grove this year. As he and his wife were leaving a business establishment, they were told, “We don’t serve your kind around here.”
Army Sgt. Derek Williams, who is studying Spanish at the Defense Language Institute, is just back from a combat tour in Iraq with the 504th Military Intelligence Battalion.
It’s the Ice Cream Shoppe on Lighthouse. The place is a shrine to the anti-Bush types.
