While keeping livestock in backyards is generally not allowed in the city of Pacific Grove, Lucy, owned by Rona Halpern and Harvey Brodsky of 900 Weldon Grove Place, is classified as a “service animal” assisting a disabled person.

City Attorney David Laredo told the City Council on Wednesday that Lucy is protected as a city resident by state and federal law.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, he said, the law does not limit “service animals” to dogs only, such as guide dogs. Any animal that helps a disabled person with something is a service animal.

There is a renewed drive to bring the Concorso Italiano to Pacific Grove, nearly one year after the city council said it didn’t think the posh car event was appropriate for the town.

In November, Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar approached Concorso owner Jack Wadsworth with the idea to bring a slightly scaled-down version of the car event to the city’s municipal golf course.

“I wrote him a letter and I convinced him to [again] consider Pacific Grove,” Ammar said.

Pacific Grove Police have been fielding calls from concerned residents after a gang member was arrested on Jan. 14 for drug and probation violations. He was living on Arkwright Court.

Commander John Nyunt admits the town does have some gang members that live and work in the community. He says, he’s seen more Surenos than Nortenos in the area. Many of them who have been drawn to escape the violence in other parts of the peninsula or who have family members who live in PG.

“I think the reality of the situation is people have to work and they will find work where there are places to live,” says Nyunt. “But I think all communities have some type of gang activity or gang influence in their community.”

Unfortunately to gang members “work” means robbing, stealing and killing.

Park right next to the bus pickup in popular areas. P.G should have supported this shuttle instead of making people park all over the residential & beachfront areas, only to have to walk to the Mvsevm.

The Monterey express shuttle will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 11 and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 12-14) and from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15. The express shuttle will leave from Cannery Row, Fisherman’s Wharf and Downtown Monterey and drop fans off at the tournament.

On Cannery Row, golf fans can catch the shuttle at Wave Street at Prescott Street, across from Willy’s Smokehouse and park in the Cannery Row garage using the entrance off Foam Street. The shuttle from Fisherman’s Wharf leaves from the mouth of the Wharf at Oliver Street off Scott Street and parking is available in the Waterfront lot off Del Monte Avenue. In Downtown Monterey, the shuttle leaves from the Monterey Conference Center at Portola Plaza and parking is available in the downtown Monterey garages using the entrances off Tyler or Franklin Streets.

“They’re moving into town,” (detective Adam Sepagan) said, citing the area of Arkwright Court, where apartments are abundant and cheap. “Unless they do something wrong and we catch them, we can’t ask them not to live here. We’d like to. It’s mostly Hispanic gangs, according to Sepagan, and while Nortenos were predominant for a while, more Surenos are arriving as of late.
“For the longest time, those people didn’t come to P.G., because they didn’t want to get caught for something like a taillight, and then be found driving a stolen car or having an outstanding warrant” Sepagan said. “But as things are getting worse throughout the county, sometimes they come here because they want to get away from the violence and everything.”

Not news. Same paper reported gangs in P.G. back in April 2005.

Last week the New York Times reported a national trend of disabled people replacing service dogs with more exotic animals — such as monkeys, parrots and small horses.

And you don’t have to go far to find an example. One resident of Pacific Grove uses a miniature horse for stability as she moves around her home. The horse is often seen being walked around a neighborhood not far from the beach.

According to the Guide Horse Foundation, miniature horses make good service animals because “they demonstrate excellent judgment and are not easily distracted by crowds and people.”

But there is a growing debate over whether unconventional service animals such as monkeys and pigs should be allowed to cozy up to people in restaurants, stores, churches and other public places.

“Where will it end?” asked Pacific Grove Mayor Dan Cort. “Because camels could be good service animals, too.”

Riders should be schooled on style

Since “slapping a female pedestrian on the head” clearly demonstrates a lack of style, perhaps the “Style Man” from Bicycling Magazine could host a seminar for local riders to explain the true essence of “Style.”

For example, there is a lack of style when the Recreation Trail is used as a criterium course for racing.

“Riders yelling at pedestrians” not only lacks style, it is a psychological call for help by riders who are consistently left behind on their local club rides.

Pedestrians could show some empathy to riders, since it is pretty difficult to keep your legs shaved, match the color of your clothes to the color of your bike, monitor your heart rate and rpms and learn words like: criterium, peloton, and bello.

The City Council could issue each rider a copy of the law to give to pedestrians, along with a stern warning when pedestrians stray into the “Bike Only” lane; of course this completely lacks style. “Style Man” might simply suggest riding next to the interloping female and say, “Hello, isn’t Monterey Bay beautiful (bello).” Now that’s style.

Long Lead Times At Crime Lab

According to PGPD detective Adam Sepagan, Patrick James Ayers stole liquor from the Pacific Grove Safeway on June 19, 2008.

The suspect escaped, but the officer recovered the bottle of hard alcohol the man dropped, and police managed to lift some fingerprints from its surface, according to Sepagan.

“We submitted the prints to the Monterey County crime lab, they were able to find a match, and we were able to get him ID’ed,” he explained. Because more serious crimes take priority in the lab, months had passed before a technician had time to run the prints through the system.
