Library Fantasizes Tax On Marijuana Sales For Support

I don’t make this up.

What about not blowing thousands on web sites or tourist trolleys. If they go the foundation route (like the Mvsevm) the library will always be open though.Liberry books

A “library summit” held Feb. 6 at the Pacific Grove Natural History Museum drew more than 100 people, including City Council members, library board members, city administrators, members of Friends of the Library, library staff and others, said senior librarian Lisa Maddalena.

Ideas raised included proposed new services, approaching Pebble Beach residents as a potential source of tax revenue, using taxes from medical marijuana sales in the city if cannabis clinics are approved, establishing a library foundation to raise funds, and trying, once again, to get a two-thirds majority of voters to approve a tax to keep the library open.

Real Headline: No Problems In Wake Of Tsunami Advisory

Nothing but waves of people gathering at the shore to watch the waves of the ocean. The shoreline accesses were all closed, leaving people to park and stand on the shoulder of the road. Then there were drivers watching the water and not the road:

The National Weather Service canceled the advisory at 8:21 p.m.

Pacific Grove police officers closed parking lots along Ocean View Boulevard. The popular Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, with its dramatic rocky shoreline, was closed to visitors.

Moammar Cheers For New Businesses Open On Lighthouse

And now wants to sweep the Farmers Market someplace else.

Four of five vacant storefronts on Lighthouse are filled – lessee, we have another art gallery, another nail shop and another one of those stores full of stuff no one wants but would buy as a gift to someone. The first ex-Business Center is still vacant but shows signs of something happening. Hallmark has been vacant for like 3 years.

Moe Ammar, president of the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce, is seeing signs that the downtown economy is turning around.

Since the first of the year, five of the six vacancies on Lighthouse Avenue have been filled, leaving only the old Hallmark location empty.

Four of the five spots were filled by merchants who already have businesses in Pacific Grove, Ammar said. The chamber hired retired banker Michael Adamson last fall as business development coordinator, and he was responsible for filling three of the spots.

NOAA Adds To The Ugly

When I first read the headline in the Pine Cone I thought about the ugly murals that adorn the building – no now they have erected some out of style light poles with solar panels that need to be big enough to work in the fog.

Then they struggle for justification – thefts, mountain lions, they are ‘green’. Just say we are the Fed, your rules do not apply. Is there more than weather and tide information in that building?

Noaa Lights Of Pain

A few months ago somebody cut the fence to the NOAA facility, Schwing said. The new lights, NOAA contends, will not only reduce the danger from human intruders but also the threat of wild animals.

“Predators have moved into our neighborhood,” he explained. “We are hoping this will dissuade mountain lions and coyotes from hanging out. This is a legitimate concern because we have had a number of deer kills on our property mountain lions and coyotes.”

A similar argument from a homeowner would probably be laughed at by coastal commission planners, who also require that property owners not create barriers to wildlife.

Tree Cutting Could Have Caused Monarch Decline

Butterfly Tree Stump

With our city on the job, the best they can come up with is spending about $80,000 on a shuttle bus to bring butterflies over from Santa Cruz.

A thinning canopy of trees may be a factor in the reduced numbers of monarch butterflies visiting the Pacific Grove sanctuary, two scientists told the City Council last week.

The council voted unanimously to direct City Manager Thomas Frutchey to convene a meeting of interested parties on the butterfly issue, engage Weiss to update and expand the sanctuary management plan, and direct the city’s Natural Resources Commission to oversee the plan update. No meeting date has been set.

Retired Pacific Grove Police Chief Carl Miller termed medical marijuana “snake oil.” He said the drug has been a factor in auto accidents and homicides in the city.

Pacific Grove already has “a serious drug problem in our schools,” he said, and opening a dispensary would send young people a message that marijuana use is harmless. He said it would draw customers from all over the county.

He said his experience as a police officer investigating drug use since medical marijuana was legalized showed most patient prescriptions “were self-certifications,” with doctors writing prescriptions based on patients’ demands and claims of health problems.
