Marina Just Says No To Marijuana Pharmacy

Both Marina and Seaside now have temporary moratoriums in effect against such clinics — actions prompted by inquiries last year about the possibility of locating them there.

City staff members say medical marijuana clinics wouldn’t promote Marina’s general plan policies. The clinics wouldn’t generate sale taxes and could prevent tax-generating businesses from finding space in the city.

I don’t oppose the use of pot, but these clinics are rife with corruption and attract crime to the area.

Grow your own.

Seaside Auto Mall Renovation To Start

The renovation area, bordered by La Salle and Broadway avenues and Del Monte and Fremont boulevards, will get updated roads, new light fixtures, a repaved central access street and new curbs and gutters.

City officials said Seaside receives about $3 million in tax revenue from the auto mall each year. That represents 60 percent of the city’s total annual sales-tax revenue and more than 20 percent of the city’s general fund revenue.

Maybe Seaside should pay Monterey a fee for every car sold What’s with the dealerships calling themselves “Monterey . . .” and being in Seaside?

Some dealerships skirt around the ID by using “Monterey Peninsula” in the name. Look at a map, Seaside is not on the peninsula.

Man Threatens To Blow Up Art Gallery With Book

Philip Beeber, 58, entered the Classic Art Gallery at 6th Avenue and San Carlos Street around 6 p.m. and told the clerks to put their wallets in a Louis Vuitton bag or he would blow up the store, police said. He made the threat using a book, police officer Mike Calhoun said.

Louis Vuitton? A label conscious robber, no less.

Recycling Is Good For Environment . .

But stinks for businesses and citizens

Salinas police said Wednesday they have arrested a man suspected of stealing about 300 bronze vases in the past week from Garden of Memories Cemetery on Abbott Street.

Officers arrested Paul Bruno, 55, who was seen removing vases from the cemetery and selling them at area recycling centers, police said.

Recycling was supposed to be a good thing, but now it’s bringing criminals into our neighborhoods and workplaces. First we had roving bands cleaning out curbside recycle bins that were meant to help keep disposal costs down, now we have modern day grave robbers desecrating cemeteries, and recently thieves stealing copper plumbing and wiring – causing thousands of dollars in damage for a few bucks worth of wine or meth.

Scrap dealers now need to be regulated like pawnbrokers. Get positive ID on anyone bringing scrap metals . .

Don’t Call It East Salinas

Call it Alisal, the New Alisal or El Nuevo Alisal de Salinas — but don’t call it east Salinas.

That term no longer is appropriate to describe the cluster of neighborhoods that make up roughly one-third of the city, generally east of Highway 101 and south of Constitution Boulevard, community leaders say.

They want to replace the moniker, which they say has come to evoke images of crime and negative racial and socio-economic stereotypes on the eastern side of Salinas, with a term free of any damaging stigma.

What ever it’s called will still be known as the ‘bad side of town’. Better to clean up the filth and criminals. Make “East Salinas” a name to associate with working families that take pride in their homes.

Monterey Fireworks Barge Beached

A large ocean swell wreaked havoc in Monterey Harbor on Wednesday night, dislodging Monterey’s fireworks barge and four boats from their moorings.

The barge, known as Sparky, had been anchored in the water just off Del Monte Beach, on the east side of Monterey Municipal Wharf No. 2. It broke free despite being secured by a “double-anchor, fail-safe system,” said Scheiblauer.

Mother nature knows nothing is failsafe.

UPDATE – Barge pushed & pulled back out to sea.

The city used an 85-foot commercial fishing boat owned by the Pennisi family combined with contractor Steve Wendt’s bulldozer to refloat the 60-ton beached barge.

Scheiblauer did not have the total cost tallied on Tuesday, but he estimated the bill to be up to $7,000.

S.F. Police Rake In Parking Ticket Fees

Catching parking scofflaws in San Francisco has become easier with the help of high-tech cameras that scan license plates in search of cars saddled with unpaid citations.

A city parking crew operating the new system can almost instantaneously find cars with at least five outstanding tickets. A two-person team roams city streets with two small cameras mounted atop their unmarked vehicle. The cameras can scan 250 or more plates an hour.

And when a match is made, the crew attaches a yellow metal boot to the front wheel, removing it only after the tickets are paid.

Aint that cool? Could get more $$ from the merchants that park all day in 2 hour spots.

Lawyer Falls To His Death In Seaside

In what police describe as a “probable” suicide leap, a prominent Monterey Bay Area attorney fell at least nine floors to his death at the Embassy Suites Hotel Monterey Bay in Seaside the morning before Christmas.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m. Sunday, officers found the body of Aptos attorney Paul Sanford in the west end of the hotel lobby, where he had landed on a large ventilation grate.

Police Capt. Steve Cercone said horrified guests were eating breakfast in the atrium at the time, and a number of witnesses saw Sanford fall from somewhere between the 9th and 12th floors.
