Oregon Town Fires Mayor For Racy Pictures

Small town votes (organized by a person named Miller!) to recall their mayor for posing in her underwear and posting pictures on MySpace. Not as tolerant as Pacific Grove’s residents with their own city councilperson with a racy photo past.

According to the person who spearheaded the recall drive, Ron Miller, the vote was 142 in favor and 139 against the recall of Mayor Carmen Kontur-Gronquist.

She came under fire after she posted photos of herself posed in lingerie on a fire truck on her MySpace page.

But the voters weren’t really just angry about the picture, some said.

Miller said the recall vote was also about some of her decisions as mayor of the small town, located along Interstate 84 between The Dalles and Pendleton in the Columbia River Gorge. That included her management of the city golf course, where she eliminated two positions during the fall and winter. That apparently did not sit well with some of the big golfers in town.

As for Gronquist, she said she is selling a poster of herself on eBay. A portion of the proceeds, she said, will go to the Arlington city ambulance company.

Carmel police are trying to solve what they are calling a bizarre robbery at a cheese shop in Carmel Plaza.

Police said thieves cut a hole in the drywall to enter the shop. Once inside, they went after specific targets that included rare, collectible wines

Pacific Grove Artwalk did say that paintings and wine go together.

Carmel’s art galleries attract crime, now the wine boutiques join the victim list.

The first call described a woman belly dancing along the right side of the road at 3:07 p.m. A minute later, drivers reported that she was using a light pole as a dancing prop and then a highway sign for a pole dance.

It wasn’t until she ran across the interstate that things got nasty, CHP officer Oscar Johnson said. The woman in a black halter top and black pants began screaming obscenities at drivers who nearly hit her as she dangerously shimmied across the highway, he said.

Police can spend hours working a crash at the expense of the village’s taxpayers, Police Chief Dave Willoughby said, even though none of its 2,483 residents caused the problem.

Now New Richmond and a growing number of cash-strapped communities large and small are billing at-fault out-of-town drivers and their insurance companies to recoup some of the cost of responding to and clearing accidents outside drivers cause.

Ocala, Fla., a community of 55,000, approved an ordinance last Tuesday that aims to collect more than $350,000 in annual reimbursements for police services. Larger cities, including Tampa and Boston, have expressed interest, according to Regina Moore, president of Dayton, Ohio-based Cost Recovery Corp., a company that helps communities bill accident-causers for police time.

Researchers from the California Institute of Technology and Stanford’s business school have directly seen that the sensation of pleasantness that people experience when tasting wine is linked directly to its price. And that’s true even when, unbeknownst to the test subjects, it’s exactly the same Cabernet Sauvignon with a dramatically different price tag.

Specifically, the researchers found that with the higher priced wines, more blood and oxygen is sent to a part of the brain called the medial orbitofrontal cortex, whose activity reflects pleasure. Brain scanning using a method called functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) showed evidence for the researchers’ hypothesis that “changes in the price of a product can influence neural computations associated with experienced pleasantness,” they said.

By the end of the day, the cleanup operation over a 300-foot cliff just south of Hurricane Point hauled off the car’s transmission, part of the frame and a few parts from the beach on Blain Deaton’s property.

For a few weeks after the crash, Deaton said he heard unusual sounds that a psychic acquaintance ascribed to the dead man’s spirit expressing thanks for his help that day.

One day while working his way down the cliff, Deaton said, he heard the crystal-clear sound of a car horn and then the sound of a hood or trunk being slammed shut. A few days later, he and his brother approached the wreckage and heard the sound of wind chimes.

“He said, ‘What is that?’ and I said, ‘You tell me,'” Deaton said.

After that, there were no more eerie sounds, just the long effort to get the wreckage removed, he said. Half of the car, which split in two during the crash, washed into the ocean during the long wait.

“I’m happy to see it taken care of … but half of that car is in the Pacific,” he said.

P.G. Man Spits At Carmel Cops In DUI Arrest

The altercation occurred after police took Soney Bae into custody for suspected drunken driving and drove him to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for a blood test because he refused to submit to a breath test, according to Cpl. Steve Rana. “He kept on getting more and more aggressive and refused to walk with the officers back to the car,” Rana said of Soney Bae, who had also refused to identify where he lived and began yelling and swearing loudly in Japanese and English. “He broke away from them a couple of times. He got away but was stumbling drunk and fell down.” Bae then reportedly spat at one of the cops. The officers finally succeeded in getting him back in their car and took him to Monterey County Jail.

In Santa Cruz County’s Environmental Health Department, program manager Jerry Lemoine said his office received a number of health complaints after the spraying. However, he said, they also received a number of complaints on an evening that the planned spraying had been canceled.

“There were a significant number of calls on one evening and the next morning of people reporting they were ill from the spraying, and the spraying didn’t happen that night,” Lemoine said.
