Big Brother’s Street Cameras Coming to Monterey

Best way to avoid getting on camera is to drive a Tesla or Audi. They seem to be exempt from displaying a front plate.

Monterey PD- announced it is exploring the implementation of an automated license-plate-reading program, referred to as ALPR, that would utilize fixed and mobile cameras. The devices capture images of vehicles and their license plates and can automatically run the numbers through crime databases to see if the owner is wanted. The footage can also help identify suspects based on when and where they were in the city at the time of a crime.

Tourist Bureau Don’t Want No Blind People

How does one See Monterey when they are seeing impaired?

Trolley Riders

As part of the rebranding, the tagline that has been used for more than 10 years, “Grab Life by the Moments,” is giving way to a new brand platform, “Find Your Way Here,” which is said to be more than a tagline, as it is an open invitation to not only travel to Monterey County but to seek connectivity within, according to the organization.

The organization hopes to build upon the momentum of last year’s Long Term Strategic Plan, meant to guide the destination and tourism economy into the future. The new 2023-24 Business Plan continues the ongoing effort to drive the potential growth of $2.2 billion in incremental visitor spending over the next decade, said See Monterey.

Need For Speed – Rec Trail

Racers whiz by, tourists block the paved portion. Admin here was nearly run over by two E-Bikes on the sidewalk downtown.

Bicycle Crash

Pacific Grove took a different approach when e-bikes started appearing on the scene, and in 2020 set a unilateral 12mph speed limit on its portion of the Rec Trail. I am not a fast biker, but on flat ground, I can tell you that you don’t even have to break a sweat to exceed 12mph on a regular old human-powered bike. Five minutes of observation in P.G. is all it takes to see this bizarrely low speed limit violated, and the same old premise that predated the speed limit comes into play: Pay attention and be courteous.

Unfortunately, for busy stretches of multi-use resources like the Rec Trail, “pay attention and be courteous” may not be enough clarity. The potential for widening the Rec Trail is low, Garcia tells me, based on right-of-way. Look for more on potential signage and speed limits to come in the coming years as the data gathering process ramps up.

At around 10 p.m. June 4, a man was by his car on Foam Street near David Avenue when two people walked up and “demanded his keys at gunpoint,” according to MPD Lt.Gabriel Kaster.
“Both suspects began to punch the victim in the face and head,” Kaster said. “At one point, the victim was hit on the head with something hard, causing a small laceration to the back of his head.”

Coast Weakly Calls Lighthouse Ave A Struggle

Lighthouse Ave Traffic

Comparing it to Alvarado. Apples and oranges. Avlarados and Lighthouses. And no one wants the homeless bums sleeping in doorways or acting strange on Lighthouse.

It’s been a balancing act for Monterey officials over the decades, figuring out how to serve the needs of motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists while managing the demands and expectations of residents and business owners. A vision for Alvarado Street forged a decade ago in the city’s Downtown Specific Plan has led to what is now a flourishing destination. The vision for Lighthouse Avenue, laid out in the Lighthouse Specific Plan adopted in 2016, has been clouded by its geography and competing opinions on how to make it work as best it can for all involved.

Overflow Of Otters Occupy The Row

I used to meet a coworker after work at Casa Maria, me snagging free appetizers while my friend tried meeting starving schoolteachers that would be there for the free appetizers too. While overhearing tourists commenting on otters they would see, we started a tale about the mechanical otters that rolled on an underwater rail, placed there to attract tourists. Sometimes seeing kayakers and divers out on the kelp we would add them to the ruse, saying they were maintaining the mechanical otters. We would hear the tourists telling each other “did you hear that? the otters are not real”

“We began seeing larger than typical rafts in mid-January,” Jess Fujii, manager of the Monterey Bay Aquarium ‘s sea otter program told, The Pine Cone this week. “The numbers have varied. But we estimate 100 to 250 otters have been resting along Cannery Row over the last few weeks. “

Tuesday Morning OOB

A discount home goods retailer is closing the majority of its stores in California — and more than half of its locations nationwide — after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week.

It’s the second time Tuesday Morning has filed for bankruptcy protection in three years. Challenges from the pandemic including temporary closures and employee furloughs forced the Dallas-headquartered company to shutter more than 200 of its nearly 700 stores in 2020.
