Oh Those Wharf Chowderheads

It would be more fun to to have a person in a Domenico’s uniform deliver the pagers, but that would take a bit of bravery.

Last fall, according to court documents, Shake began noticing the disappearance of pagers he gives to customers to allow them to wander the wharf while waiting for a table.

Shake, who suspected a competitor was wooing his customers and dumping the devices, hired diver Don Maulhardt to search under the wharf. On two dives, Maulhardt recovered 10 pagers from the harbor’s bottom, allegedly beneath Domenico’s.

Maulhardt in the water beneath Domenico’s when they set up a sting with an undercover officer Nov. 19. That officer posed as a patron with one of the Grotto’s pagers on the wharf. Mercurio allegedly persuaded the officer to dine at his restaurant and took the pager, promising to return it to the Grotto.

Pacific Grove Employee Of The Year

Not every day that the parking enforcement person is honored.

Tony Marino, community services officer for the Pacific Grove Police Department, has been named City Employee of the Year by the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce.

Announcement of the award was made by Moe Ammar, chamber president, who said Marino was selected by the chamber board for his contributions to improving the quality of life in Pacific Grove beyond the call of duty.

Oh, it’s awarded by the Chamber O Commerce. Is that why businesses owners can leave their cars parked in 2-hour spaces all day and not get ticketed? Is it a perk of being a chamber member?

“Burn artificial logs” Pacific Grove resident Rena Henderson writes:

I used to enjoy a nice, crackling fire as much as the next person. But I’ll never burn wood again. I now know how intrusive and destructive wood fires are to our neighbors. If causing your neighbor’s home to smell like an ashtray is not enough to convince you, then consider a few facts.

The particulate matter in wood smoke is so small that windows and doors cannot keep it out — even in energy-efficient, weather-tight homes. A study by the University of Washington showed that 50 to 70 percent of the outdoor levels of wood smoke entered neighboring homes. An EPA study found similar results.

Wood smoke contains carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide and various irritant gases that can scar the lungs. It also contains chemicals known or suspected to be carcinogens.

Well those ‘artificial logs’ contain paraffin wax. How about listing a few toxins found in paraffin wax, including toluene, benzene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and naphthalene–substances found in paint, lacquer and varnish removers to fill the air?

Forest Hill Becoming Crime Central – Burglars Hit Pizza My Way

Pizza My Way

Pizza My Way at 1157 Forest Ave. in Pacific Grove was burglarized Thursday, police said.

Officers were called there about 7:30 a.m. and found the glass in the front door smashed. File cabinets inside had been pried open.

File cabinets pried open? Someone looking to steal company secrets?

Letters From The Editor – Farmers Market

Herald Hear-old

Rant: So Pacific Grove merchants don’t want people from outside Pacific Grove selling their wares at the Pacific Grove Certified Farmers Market. That almost makes sense, or it would if the only point to the whole thing was protection of the Pacific Grove merchants. But the customers ought to count for something, don’t you think? Unless we’re missing something, more vendors equals more stuff for sale equals more customers for everyone.

They don’t get it. If they had any sense of customer service they’d stay in town late and buy a booth to extend their wares to the street along side the rest, only with a message that they are also available the other days of the week.

P.G. Motels Unable To Fleece People 3 Weekends In A Row

Remember all those outrageous rates and forced 3 day stays? Karma.

Cry Baby

The lost potential for multiple sold-out February weekends is hitting local businesses hard, Moe Ammar, president of the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce, said.

“From a business perspective, it’s really, really bad,” he said. “There are a lot of unhappy hotel owners.”

Typically, this February weekend at the Seven Gables Inn would be all about Valentine’s Day.

The bed and breakfast, just off Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, bills itself as “a truly romantic inn on the very edge of Monterey Bay.”

This week, however, things are a bit more complicated: Bookings are about equally split between the romantic getaway crowd and those here to take in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

New Concessionaire At Asilomar

Old one is not too happy. Obvious.

State Parks announced the award of a 20-year contract to operate Asilomar on Jan. 27. State Parks spokesman Roy Stearns said DNC’s contract expired in 2008 and requests for bidding proposals were advertised, as required by law. ARAMARK, he said, was the only other bidder on the contract.

Under the new contract, scheduled for signing next month, the concessionaire is required to guarantee the state an annual rental rate of $1.9 million or 8.6 percent of gross receipts, Stearns said, whichever is higher, as well as capital improvements, program support and facility maintenance fees.

Locals Are Running Farmer’s Market Out Of Town

The rusty garden decor shop and the second liquor store in town join forces to get rid of the people from outside the gates. Not that they sell anything that is in competition with them….

Now where am I going to get any substainable watermelons?

In the six months since the weekly outdoor market made its debut, the event has attracted a small following of attendees who turn out for organic produce, a chance to see their neighbors and support some local merchants.

Just how local some of those merchants are has been brought into question: Complaints in recent weeks accused some vendors of being from outside Pacific Grove.

“It’s a minor point of contention,” said Bill Valuch, co-owner of Miss Trawick’s Garden Shop and a member of the Business Improvement District advisory board, “but some businesses did not think that was fair.”

As a result, downtown merchants asked the planning commission to establish measurable guidelines to ensure the vendor pool remains local.

Pebble Beach Pro Am Starts, Will The Crowds Materialize?

The tournament should benefit from the return of the wildly popular Murray, who skipped the tournament last year. The former Saturday Night Live crew member has been a regular fan favorite since he started playing the AT&T in 1992.

Murray will have some company in the laughs department: funnymen George Lopez, Tom Dreesen, Kevin James and Ray Romano are in the field. The music world will be well represented by stars such as Justin Timberlake, Kenny G, Michael Bolton and Clay Walker. And celebrity hounds will have plenty of actors to choose from, including Andy Garcia, Greg Kinnear and Luke Wilson.
