Flush Twice For Tourists, Nothing For Replenishment

The recycled water plan was a bait and switch.

Dollar Water

City Manager Tom Frutchey explained during the October council hearing that it was always the plan to eventually make most of the saved potable water available for city allocation to new uses. He did, however, also note the allocation process can be lengthy and most of the water would remain in the river when the plant opens. The city’s plan calls for construction to begin in the spring and be finished and operational by late next year or early 2017.

Pacific Grove activist Luke Colletti called the city’s maneuvers on the project to make water available for new projects such as the New Bella hotel proposal at the American Tin Cannery instead of offsetting illegal diversions from the river a “major deception.” He argued the city was risking its state funding. Colletti alleged that city officials had lied to the Coastal Commission, which he said believed the recycled water would go back to the river to help the environment.

Jacobo Ruelas Conviction Stands

As it should be.
Kris Olinger Bench 2013

The Sixth District Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of Jacobo Ruelas in the 1997 murder of 17-year-old Kristopher Olinger, according to Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo.

Ruelas was convicted in October 2013 of first-degree murder with special circumstances, kidnapping for robbery and kidnapping for carjacking in the death of the Monterey High School senior, who was stabbed and left to die near the Pacific Grove Recreation Trail.

Ruelas was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

The case went unsolved for nearly a decade before state investigators matched palm prints on Olinger’s car in 2005 to Ruelas and his brother Angel.

Angel Ruelas was also charged in connection with the crime, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life without possibility of parole.

Red Tuna Crab

Native to Baja and the Gulf of California, red tuna crabs spend their lives drifting en masse in the water column offshore. Generally, Monterey is too cold for them. But during El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, warm water moves unusually far north, bringing the crabs up with it. ENSO is an irregularly periodical climate change caused by variations in sea surface temperatures over the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean.

Missing P.G. Man Found Deceased In Hollister

Chad Hillhouse, 39, loved the outdoors and frequently visited Asilomar State Beach. But when he went missing on Aug. 13, he left no trace. No one saw or heard from him until this past weekend, when a group of people in the Hollister Hills area found his body.

His mother, Deb Dahlinger, was notified Tuesday, three days after she flew back home to Hawaii without knowing much about her son’s whereabouts. She came to Monterey County with her two other children to search for Hillhouse.

Police Chief Vicki Myers Is Out

Friutcheese cites riots in USA as a reason.

PGPD Help Wanted

As dual-city Police Chief Vicki Myers shifts her focus back to Seaside, Pacific Grove is beginning its search for an interim police chief.

Myers, who served as police chief in Seaside and Pacific Grove since 2012, was given a 90-day notice over the weekend that Pacific Grove will terminate its contract with Seaside pertaining to Myers running its police department.

Frutchey also cited two “no-confidence” votes by the Pacific Grove police union and a citywide survey that found residents would like to keep its own separate police department as reasons for the city moving on from Myers.

Police Chief Sharing Is Over

It is too bad that there’s no local candidates for police chief and we need to resort to part time with Seaside.

Since Myers took over both police departments, under a cost-saving contract with the city of Seaside, police union leadership in both cities have denounced her leadership style, adding that her “intimidation tactics” have crippled morale in both departments.

“Given our second vote of ‘no-confidence’ we feel like this is a good direction for our police department and the city to take,” Renfro said.

There have also been calls to investigate what some say is a hostile work environment, including a complaint last year involving seven of her employees in Seaside alleging “inappropriate physical contact” in separate occasions, one employee claiming she was punched by Myers, according to Frank Martin of the Seaside Police Officers Association.

Project Bella Overhead View

Built in 1927 for use in the sardine heyday, the Tin Cannery has been home to outlet shopping since 1988 and never seemed to take off, despite the thousands of visitors exiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium across the street.

When the outlet mall had stores it was pretty good. One could get a variety of things without having to deal with the traffic. Ardan’s, Rebock, Corning and more.

If this deal fizzels, remember these names people.

“Project Bella aims to be the leading luxury hotel in the United States,” said a news release.

The project is a partnership between Domaine Hospitality Partners and the Cannery Row Co., which owns the cannery building.

Wednesday’s press conference will include Julie Packard, executive director of the aquarium, developer Ted Balestreri, Pacific Grove mayor Bill Kampe and Domaine CEO Ronald Meer.

Short Term Rental Permit Freeze

What started as a casual room rental idea is turning into entire homes being rented out, with no permanent residents on site. So much for rental homes in P.G. for families to live in.

The vote was 6-1, with Councilman Ken Cuneo dissenting.

After listening to about a dozen people speak both for and against the moratorium during a long public comment period, the council debated the merits.

“The City Council needs to take the lead,” said Mayor Bill Kampe. “It’s our job to wrestle with this.”

There was an almost even split between supporters and detractors of the vacation rental practice. Comments in support ranged from reports of good experiences with renters to enjoying the exchange between cultures. Detractors spoke of unruly, noisy and uncaring guests who sometimes exceeded maximum occupancy, exacerbated parking problems and even trespassed.

Bad Day For Radiator Repairmen

And people stuck behind a VW. But good day to sell fire extinguishers.

Too Slow VW Bus

Some 130 air-cooled Volkswagens that left the U.S.-Canada border on Friday for a 1,500-mile, border-to-border cruise rolled into Pacific Grove on Wednesday afternoon, turning heads and bringing back memories.

It was the Pacific Grove VW Show & Shine, a stop on the Treffen 17 VW Cruise and Car Show started by Scott Dempster, CEO of Airhead Parts in Ventura, a supplier of stock, air-cooled VW restoration parts.

Defrauding (by) An Innkeeper

Claimed to be historic, intimate, charming, blah blah blah. Was a big old house that was cut up into cheap apartments at one time.

Pacific Grove Inn on Pine Avenue shut down two weeks ago and customers who were supposed to stay there say the hotel took their money and still hasn’t reimbursed them.

On Tuesday, a sign was posted on the front door of the inn telling customers to write their name, number and email on the yellow pad on the front porch.

The 16-room hotel was operated by Malibu businessman Gary Peterson, who filed for bankruptcy July 15 in Santa Barbara.
