Sustainable Pacific Grove, a volunteer group undertaking projects to help the city become more self-reliant and sustainable, and Trees for PG plan to erase the carbon footprint of the city’s annual Good Old Days celebration with trees — seedlings and adults — planted around the city after next month’s festival.

This does not sound like a good idea.

They will block the sun from the solar panels!

Ronald Reagan said they cause pollution!

Police will run innocent suspects into them.

They are killing the tourists.

Tour Bus Crashes Into Aquarium Entrance

Monterey police Sgt. Bill Clark said the Coach USA bus was empty and parked on David Avenue west of Wave Street about a block above the aquarium when it began rolling downhill about 1:45 p.m. It hit several city signs and clipped the front of a vehicle driving on Wave Street before continuing down David Avenue.

The bus next sideswiped a building at 898 Wave St. that houses the aquarium’s offices and continued rolling down the sidewalk before hitting the Aquarium building on Cannery Row outside the gift shop.

Sales taxes only produce revenue when there are taxable things being sold.

The City Council voted unanimously March 5 to put the measure on the June 3 ballot to meet a March 7 filing deadline with the county Registrar of Voters.

Measure U, if approved, would raise the sales tax from 7.25 percent to 8.25 percent, with the additional cent on the dollar going to the city general fund.

It’s a fact. Cell receptions totally stinks in PG business areas.

Thank you, Pacific Grove elders, for allowing me to spend several hundred dollars in your beautiful city, but not allowing me to use my cell phone due to your poor reception.

It’s a shame you are so resistant to any new technology allowing cell towers, but you will gladly take my money.

From now on, I will spend my dollars down the street in Monterey where I can use my cell phone and buy a Starbucks. Your city may be beautiful, but it is the 21st century.

Glenn Blevins Declared Competent

State doctors have decided a mentally ill Monterey man charged with beating a day laborer on Fort Ord is now competent to face trial.

Judge Timothy Roberts said Glenn Blevins would be transported to Monterey County Jail from Atascadero State Mental Hospital. Doctors at Atascadero informed the court Blevins’ competency had been restored through treatment, the judge said this morning.

He is charged with an Aug. 10 attack on Artemio Santiago Garcia, 30. According to Marina police, Blevins chose Garcia from a group of day laborers in Seaside on the pretext that he needed some work done. He then allegedly drove his white pickup to an abandoned area of Fort Ord, where he beat Santiago Garcia to the point of unconsciousness.

A top state bug expert threw cold water Friday on a report suggesting the light brown apple moth has been kept in check in New Zealand without an aggressive pesticide program.

The report’s shortcomings, in Hoffman’s view, include:
· Overlooking financial and environmental costs of New Zealand’s pest management program.
· Giving short shrift to possible pitfalls of introducing non-native species to prey on the light brown apple moth.

It is unlikely the moth’s natural enemies would be allowed in the United States, Hoffman said.
· Ignoring the potential impact if the light brown apple moth becomes established in other parts of California, other states or Mexico and Canada.

“The authors display a lack of understanding about the purpose of classifying (the moth) as a regulated pest and the necessity of implementing actions to restrict its movement,” Hoffman wrote.

Peninsula Teenagers Have Drinking Problem

What about the teachers? I remember one in particular at PG High. Don’t forget Frank Abbruzzetti the PGMS teacher that was arrested for operating a meth lab. Recently another teacher and meth story surfaced in the Bay Area – this one was videotaping the girls in the bathroom next to his classroom.

Forty-four percent of 11th-graders surveyed in the Peninsula’s high schools from fall 2004 to spring 2006 admitted to consuming some alcohol within the 30 days prior to the survey, compared to 37 percent in the county and statewide.

The data were gathered by the California Healthy Kids Resource Center, a state-funded repository of health education materials in Hayward, and analyzed by IMPACT for Youth, a organization in Pacific Grove focused on raising awareness about alcohol and drug abuse among teens.

Reducing alcohol consumption can also reduce some risky behavior among teenagers, such as drunken driving, Myer said.

Ex-sheriff’s Recruit Accused In New Monterey

A former Monterey County sheriff’s recruit pleaded not guilty this week to charges of rape and sodomy of an unconscious victim. Chad Michael Neuman, 38, was arrested Feb. 23 at his apartment in New Monterey after a woman told Monterey police he assaulted her in her home.

The woman told police she met Neuman the night before at Segovia’s bar on Lighthouse Avenue, said Deputy Chief Phil Penko. The two drank together and then went to the woman’s house, he said.

At some point, the woman victim said, she fell asleep. When she awoke, the woman told police, she found Neuman on top of her attempting to sexually assault her. “In colorful terms, she told him to get out,” Penko said. “He got his stuff and left.”

Jeanne, if an extra penny on the dollar will drive your customers to Monterey, your fabrics are way to expensive already.

The Pacific Grove City Council voted unanimously to put a measure on the June 3 ballot that, if approved, would raise the sales tax from 7.25 percent to 8.25 percent, with the additional cent on the dollar going to the city general fund.

That 13.8 percent increase in the sales tax rate is expected to raise an additional $1.3 million annually in revenues, said city Director of Management and Budget Jim Becklenberg.

But Jeanne Graham, owner of the Handmaden craft and fabric store, argued that raising the sales tax will drive residents to shop in neighboring Monterey.

Farr made the remark Tuesday when Immigration and Customs Enforcement Chief Julie Meyers was addressing concerns about federal raids of illegal immigrants before the House Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, which Farr sits on.

“What happens is the public image of you becomes one of not this compassionate law enforcement agency but essentially a Gestapo-type agency that is knocking down doors,” Farr said, according to preliminary transcripts of the hearing.

Meyers interrupted Farr and said: “We are not the Gestapo.”

Replied Farr: “I appreciate that, and I know that. I’m just telling you that there is a very ill will public opinion in the counties I represent about ICE.”

Farr has not withdrawn the remark. He said it came from the impression many of his constituents have of ICE, which periodically rounds up people without proper documents and deports them.

Over in Sam’s represented county, crime is out of control, there are Mexican gang members shooting each other all over town at and hard working businesses getting robbed every week. Even the Mayor of Salinas had his home burglarized. It’s certainly not the ICE agents causing the crime wave, Sam the Sham shows his support for the criminals and not the protectors.
