Cops Run Down Thugs, Praise The Lord!

After a shooting in East Salinas, at least two men are in custody after leading dozens of law enforcement officials on a high-speed car chase that ended with a fiery crash in a ditch on Thursday.

The (suspect’s) Lincoln ended up crashing down a steep culvert behind a motorcycle dealership where hundreds of Christian rock aficionados were spending a hot summer afternoon.

“Let’s praise the Lord for what he has just done,” the singer chanted to the audience.

Glass Bottom Boat Replica Installed

Looks like a lion in it’s cage, all chained up . .
New Swan Boat

A replica of the glass-bottom swan boats that once plied the shallows around Lovers Point in Pacific Grove has been put on display there by the Pacific Grove Heritage Society.

The swan boat was christened the Margruss, after Margaret and Russell Sprague.

The project was financed by $14,000 in donations to the society, Honegger said. The Heritage Society plans to place a plaque with the boat and a ceremony may be held in July.

I remember taking rides in the originals. That would be a great thing to have back again.swan boat postcard

Pacific Grove Farmers Market Gets The Go Ahead

No one spoke against it, but the sellers of booze and phony charm sure don’t sound very supportive.

On Thursday, the commission voted unanimously to approve a negative environmental impact declaration and a use permit for Everyone’s Harvest to conduct the Farmers Market between 4 and 8 p.m. Mondays on Lighthouse Avenue between Forest Avenue and 18th Street.

“I don’t think it’s possible not to ruffle someone’s feathers,” said Beth Cort, wife of Mayor Dan Cort. “You can’t please everyone. It should be in the center of town.”

No one spoke against the idea of a farmers market in Pacific Grove. Disagreements arose over the time and location.

Golf Fees Going Up

On Wednesday, the City Council voted 5-0 to impose surcharges on holders of annual passes for the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course.

Players holding passes will pay $1 for a nine-hole round of golf and $2 for 18 holes, in addition to the annual pass fee.

Resident and avid golfer Jim Willoughby objected to the fee, saying the “nickel-and-dime” surcharge amounted to a 32 percent increase for players like him, who play two rounds a week at the course.

Crybaby Golfer

An annual senior’s pass costs $650, and the surcharge would run up to $208 more a year in his case, Willoughby said, adding that it is an undue burden on seniors living on fixed incomes.

Steve Thomas, a member of the Pacific Grove Men’s Golf Club, said the surcharge “will create ill will.”

At $8.58 per golf round, Willoughby and others are still getting a bargain, said Councilman Dan Davis. Non-residents pay $45 a round.

And if high golf fees pee you off, there’s The UroClub™

Uro Club

The privacy shield hooks to the sides of the pants or belt and adds stability. This allows freedom of the hands to manipulate the club and zipper.

The UroClub™ is intended to eliminate anxiety and any feeling of uneasiness on the course. It can be emptied at the nearest restroom or later on, when the golfer returns home.

Capacity: Over half a liter, twice the volume commonly urinated.

Council Votes To End CALPERS

Notice the color changing on the roof of city hall?
Poopy City Hall Roof

Wednesday the City Council voted 5-0 — Councilmembers Vicki Stilwell and Scott Miller were absent — in favor of a resolution of intent to terminate Pacific Grove’s contract with CalPERS, the first step in the process of looking into ending use of the system to fund city employee retirement benefits.

Since the dot-com stock market crash in the late 1990s, the city’s annual contributions to the retirement system jumped from $100,000 then to $2.6 million this year, according to city management and budget director Jim Becklenberg.

CalPERS-guaranteed benefits are mostly financed by income from its investments, which tanked in the market crash, he said.

Raise Golf Fees To Pay For Lighthouse Upkeep?

Councilman Dan Davis said that because the city took responsibility for maintaining the lighthouse as part of an agreement to acquire the back nine holes of the municipal golf course, revenue from golf fees should help.

On June 18, the council will discuss a $2 surcharge for 18 holes and $1 for nine-hole rounds at the city golf course played on annual card privileges.

Old Grumpy Golfers

Sounds like a fair deal. Unless you are a cranky golfer.

Perhaps the city manager would like to start yet another new trend for designer golf courses by charging a fee for use of the putting green. It wouldn’t surprise me if the city would require your score card to be turned in at the end of each round for an additional overcharge of a nickel per swing. How about improving concentration by installing parking meters in the parking lot?

Voters Approve Tax

$300,000 difference on items sold but not delivered in the city. Art Galleries most likely the dead weight on the economy.

The 1 percent that the city already gets as its share of the sales tax brings in $1.6 million a year, he said, noting that the $300,000 difference is because of sales orders placed and delivered outside the city that are not subject to the increase. Becklenberg described Measure U as a “district” tax applicable only to transactions within town borders.

Vehicles purchased outside the city but registered in Pacific Grove will be subject to the tax, City Attorney David Laredo said.

Sevengill Shark Goes To Fish Prison

A 9-foot-3-inch female sevengill shark is the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s latest addition, just in time for the busy Memorial Day weekend.

Sevengill sharks are found in waters up to 2,700 feet deep off the Pacific coast from Southern California to British Columbia. They feed along the ocean bottom much of the time, and are believed to enter coastal bays to give birth.

Yah, but what’s it eat?

The sharpnose seven-gill shark feeds on bony fish, rays, small sharks, squid and crustaceans.
