Cal Am Water Takes It’s Time To Fix Leak

Four months ago, plumbers doing work on the house pointed out a leak at the water meter that connects to the house.

“It’s not visible to the naked eye. You have to lift the cover,”

Plumbers who found the leak called California American Water Company and told them about the problem.

Cal Am’s own employees HAD to have seen this when the check the meter every month, right? In the meantime, they spend money on advertisements telling us to save the precious H20 they suck out of the ground and charge us for . .

Great White Shark Back In Fish Jail

The 4-foot, 55.5-pound young female shark was brought to the aquarium Wednesday after being trapped Aug. 16 in a net off Malibu, aquarium spokesman Ken Peterson said in a news release. The shark will likely remain on exhibit for several months.

Since 2004, three white sharks have been displayed at the aquarium, with more than 2 million visitors seeing them before they were released into the ocean.

Lighthouse Avenue Going One Way?

City council approved it. It’s not too bad for the average Pacific Grove commuter, but what’s to gain by making one of the 3 lanes an HOV lane. Taking out two lanes of parking and not replacing it, I can see why business people are against the one-way.

The age old suggestions of opening up Hawthorne is absent, as is widening Holman Highway.

Lighthouse Ave Traffic

Converting Lighthouse Avenue from four-lane, two-way traffic to three-lane, one-way southbound traffic between David Avenue and Private Bolio Road. The right lane would be reserved for buses, carpools and other high-occupancy passenger vehicles.

· Keeping Foam Street one-way northbound, but eliminating parking on the east, or ocean side, to provide three lanes of traffic rather than the current two lanes. Parking would have to be replaced, Deal said.

· Adding a southbound right-turn lane at Private Bolio Road to accommodate cars entering the Presidio of Monterey.

· Restoring two-way traffic on Dickman Avenue.

· Widening David Avenue at Lighthouse to provide additional turn lanes from Foam to David.

· Making Hoffman Avenue one-way westbound between Foam and Lighthouse to accommodate vehicles leaving the Cannery Row parking garage.

Members of the public who spoke at the meeting generally supported Alternative 6, with its bus lane. But two spokesmen for area businesses, John Narigi of the New Monterey and Old

Monterey business associations and Frank Donangelo of the Cannery Row Co. and Foursome Development, said it would be more practical to widen Lighthouse and keep it two-way.

Rec Trail Asilomar

Union Pacific Railroad is offering its former rail line in Pacific Grove’s Asilomar area for sale, with an asking price of $1.6 million.

The property includes a .69 acre lot at Crocker and Sinex avenues that may be suitable for building. A railroad station once stood on the corner, according to Union Pacific spokeswoman Zoe Richmond in Sacramento.

The total 9.12 acre property stretches from Sinex Avenue to the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course, but most of it is “very thin,” she said, “not something for development.”

Union Pacific put the property up for sale about eight years ago,

Why didn’t P.G. buy it back then when there was money in the bank?

Election 2008 – Eight Candidates For Council

Vote Machine

. . seeking three seats being vacated by incumbents Scott Miller, Dan Davis and Susan Nilmeier:

Former Councilwoman Susan Goldbeck, and newcomers Richard Ahart, Ken Cunio, David Dilworth, Carmelita Garcia, Bill Kampe, Deborah Lindsay and Dan Miller.

Pacific Grove voters will vote on two ballot measures: Measure X, calling for a $35 parcel tax for the next five years for the Pacific Grove Unified School District;

Can’t say that I’d support another school tax. That $6,000,000 stadium at PGHS and $1,700,000 district offices tells me that there is plenty enough money going to the school district.

Rescue At Sea!

The Coast Guard received a distress call at about 1:10 p.m. from the “Blue Chip”, a boat 17 feet long with two passengers on board that was disabled and adrift 80 nautical miles west of Point Pinos.

The Coast Guard asked any vessels in the area to divert to the skiff’s location if possible.

The “Golden Bear,” returning from a two-month international training cruise, responded to the call at about 4 p.m. and agreed to assist. The training ship brought the two sailors safely onboard at about 9:55 p.m., according to the Coast Guard.

A big salute to the academy.

While limited emergency repairs were approved by the California Coastal Commission in early 2004, the process for gaining approval for the entire project involved several federal, state and local agencies.

The city will be seeking donations — an additional $192,000 — to complete the projects.

Pave Our Waterfront – Ocean View Plaza Approved

The cannery that once stood there was a favorite place to play. Loaded with danger and excitement. And many easy access points.

The Ocean View Plaza on Cannery Row could not receive approval without securing a water supply. But the project now has its water after the California Coastal Commission voted 10-2 on Thursday to approve the project’s proposed desalination plant.

The plan calls for a replica of the San Xavier fish-reduction plant warehouse, a community park, renovation of the Stohans building, a history-oriented plaza and a bridge across the 400-500 block of Cannery Row.

Tough Times For P.G. Hardware

All that boils down to one thing: profit margins are slimmer than ever at Pacific Grove Hardware.

Nonetheless, the same high fuel costs that are pushing his own costs up are also being felt by customers, and (Bill) Derowski thinks many of his local customers are opting to shop close to home rather than driving further to big-box hardware stores in neighboring cities, where prices may sometimes be lower but savings could be absorbed by the extra mileage.

Amazing store – very well stocked and helpful. Hope there’s enough support to keep them afloat.
