“It’s just the last small hometown,” said Keller Williams/Monterey Peninsula Home Team realtor Jeff Davi. “It’s way out here on the Peninsula and it’s relatively quiet. It’s so safe and the prices are even less expensive than San Francisco.”
Since they’re only home on the weekends, second home buyers don’t use fire, police and other municipal services as often, even though they pay the property taxes for them.
“They’re [SIC] kids aren’t showing up at parks and recs, their kids aren’t crowding our schools,” explained Brouder.
On the flip side developers told KION second home communities make neighborhoods feel more like a ghost town. They’re also not shopping as much, so they aren’t contributing a lot to the local economy. Add to that, they’re competing for houses with locals who may not have big bucks and that has created some resentment.

“In the fall of this year we will be replacing the sanitary sewer line along Oceanview Blvd., and in conjunction with that project we will be replacing over a mile of storm drain line,” said Gho.
“I think Pacific Grove really values its history. Its cultural history and its natural history. And I think the museum operates on both fronts to preserve all aspects of our history,” said Museum Collection Curator Paul Vandecarr.
This year is also historic.
“This actually marks the 100th year anniversary of the City owning the collection here at the museum,” said Vandecarr.
Mysterious oily substance on beach surrounded by restaurants eh?
Cleanup has begun at McAbee Beach in Monterey after an oily substance was found in the sand in February. Crews were removing contaminated sediment Tuesday from the area near Cannery Row where they discovered the petroleum substance, according to the Monterey County Health Department.
The substance is leaking from the foundation of an old building on the beach, but the source of the substance is still unknown.

“There’s volunteers all along the west coast, primarily in California that are counting over wintering sites during the three weeks around thanksgiving,” said Pacific Grove Museum Director of Education Ann Wasser.
“They’re looking at different pesticides, they’re looking at habitat loss with milk weed which is what the monarchs use to lay their eggs on. A lot of people treat it as a weed so they pull it,” said Wasser.

Each year the Xerces Society does an annual Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count.
“There’s volunteers all along the west coast, primarily in California that are counting over wintering sites during the three weeks around thanksgiving,” said Pacific Grove Museum Director of Education Ann Wasser.
Those numbers, which were just made available, show that almost 280-thousand monarchs made the long journey. And while it’s a big difference from the 1.2 million that use to fly to the California coast during winter, it is higher than previous years for most places.
“For Monterey County our numbers were not as high as they were last year. Counties farther north of us, especially Marin County, had much higher numbers this year,” said Wasser.

According to the Pacific Grove Public Works Department, steady erosion along the coastline is not to the point where immediate action needs to be taken, however it no longer can be ignored either.
“We’ve retained Haro, Kasunich and Associates to do the study,” said Public Works Director Daniel Gho.
That study, which is planned to begin soon, will look into different scenarios the City could take.
