Pacific Grove – City Of Homes Or Transients

Less resources for residents, says Moammar.

The Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce is proposing that voters re-write a decades old law to help bring in some money to the cash-strapped city.

Victoria Arroyo, the general manager of the Seabreeze Inn and Cottages in Pacific Grove, said their hands are tied when it comes to upgrading their facility. Arroyo said they want to be competitive with their Monterey neighbors, but it’s nearly impossible with Measure C in place.

City Employees: You Can Be Replaced By Volunteers

Replacing workers with volunteers was in the plans all along!

City leaders are hoping to pass on Wednesday night the citywide program, in which college students can get valuable job experience while helping the city. The proposal deals more with office work and not hard manual labor.

“It’s a win win… when we first started talking about this (volunteer program) the economy wasn’t in the condition it’s in,” says Mayor Dan Cort.

P.G. Sales Tax Hits 9.25%

Obama lied.

In two days, sales tax goes up one percent in California to help bring more money to the state. That means depending on the city, taxes will range from 8.25% to 10.25%.

Basically, the tax increases one cent on every dollar you spend. For example, if you want to buy a car that costs $20,000, after April 1, you will have to pay an additional $200 in sales tax.

Most cities in Monterey County will have an 8.25% sales tax. Some exceptions include Salinas where the sales tax will be higher at 8.75% and Pacific Grove at 9.25%. In Santa Cruz County, the city of Santa Cruz has the highest sales tax in the area at 9.5%. In San Benito County, Hollister has a 9.25%, same as nearby Gilroy.

Democrats are looking to continue a wave of support following the November elections; along with pushing for the Obama federal economic stimulus plan, state Democrats are asking for a backing of a package of ballot measures facing voters in a special election in May. The ballot measures call for a number of changes to California budget policy, following the passage of a belated state budget in February.

“We need to move this state forward we can’t be last in schools, education,” said Shawn Bagley, Central Coast Regional Director. “When I grew up (California) was first in everything–what on earth happened?”

What happened? We sent Sam “the sham” Farr, Babs “checkbouncer” Boxer & Nancy “on  a jet plane” Pelosi to Washington. Decades of Democrat control, that’s what happened.

Red Ferraris On Golf Course

Laguna Seca is a more perfect name for sports car events.

The biggest luxury Italian car show on the Central Coast will be rolling onto the golf links of Laguna Seca in Monterey.

Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar said they hope the show will come to their links in the future.

“It’s not a dead deal,” said Ammar.

Ammar said the Pacific Grove golf course is also a good location. He said the course’s pristine oceanfront property and it’s location to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance makes it a prime spot.

Gangs On Arkwright Court – Tag It Obvious

Arkwright Ct

Pacific Grove Police have been fielding calls from concerned residents after a gang member was arrested on Jan. 14 for drug and probation violations. He was living on Arkwright Court.

Commander John Nyunt admits the town does have some gang members that live and work in the community. He says, he’s seen more Surenos than Nortenos in the area. Many of them who have been drawn to escape the violence in other parts of the peninsula or who have family members who live in PG.

“I think the reality of the situation is people have to work and they will find work where there are places to live,” says Nyunt. “But I think all communities have some type of gang activity or gang influence in their community.”

Unfortunately to gang members “work” means robbing, stealing and killing.

Pebble Beach Hiring Fewer Temp Workers At Crosby

Guess they are using more P.B. full time employees. I’d do the same, I’d rather give my workers the overtime $$ than to temps.

The jobs range from food and beverage, to cashiers, and shuttle drivers, however when some people who are normally hired to work the event showed up to fill out their applications they were turned away and told they would not be hired. According to Pebble Beach management the economy is to blame.

Used Clothing Stores Attract Status Seeking Moms

Can’t let the little snowflakes run around in lesser clothing. Don’t forget that laws protecting children from clothing that contains lead do not apply to second hand shops.

From The Californian

A law set to take effect Tuesday will for the first time set limits on lead and other hazardous materials found in products manufactured for children ages 12 and younger.

The law stops short of requiring thrift and consignment shop owners to test second-hand clothing and toys. But it does hold them and other sellers liable for civil and criminal penalties if they sell products that have been subject to a recall or that have lead or phthalates content that exceeds the new limits.

With so many local businesses fighting for their lives or even closing down there are some who are doing surprisingly well. The Chatterbaux Children Consignment Shop in Pacific Grove is doing very well.

Heather Radcliffe from Pacific Grove says she does 80% of her shopping at the Chatterbaux, ” you can buy a lot more wonderful things, Jamboree, GAP, things that are more expensive, I can buy ten times of them here and pay less than the regular price”.
