Slash & Burn. Layoffs & Cutbacks Imminent

In 2007, the city eliminated 24 employee positions, which included the layoffs of 16 workers. The move was said to save an estimated $580,000. Now, Becklenberg said the council needs to consider more layoffs.
“We will have to look at customer service at city hall,” he said. “Can we afford the same staffing levels?” Becklenberg will also tell council members the city could save tens of thousands of dollars every year simply by loosening it’s notoriously rigid architectural and historic review standards.

Ditch that tourist chamber payoff, don’t think it’s done any good.

They’re Baccccck!

Mothra

Well, when California farm products are banned elsewhere and the ag business goes to heck, we can thank ecoterrorists like David Dilworth for being kind and gentle to the moths.

State officials are calling the invasive light brown apple moth’s recent havoc on two Watsonville berry crops the first “significant damage” since the pest was discovered in California two years ago.

Bolda wrote it was “imperative” growers undertake control measures to inimize the chance of LBAM damage. “The increasing problem of the light brown apple moth — epiphyas postvittana — should be of great interest to all berry growers in the Santa Cruz and Monterey County production district,” Bolda wrote in a blog a week earlier. About 2,400 square miles are under quarantine in California because of the light brown apple moth threat to crops.

“They were driving southbound on Alva Lane in the Pebble Beach area and were just north of 17 Mile Drive when they approached a curve in the road at what appeared to be an unsafe speed,” he said, describing the accident that occurred just before 6 p.m. June 12. “The driver lost control, and the vehicle ran off the road on the right side and struck a tree on the driver’s side.”

James Crane, founder of one of the nation’s largest freight companies in Houston, Texas, and owner of the 2003 Ferrari 575M Maranello, was riding in the passenger seat and was unharmed, according to Wiest. But the driver, Neil Kelley, also from Houston and CEO of an energy trading firm there, suffered major injuries. Both men are in their 50s.

A crackdown on fast driving in Del Monte Forest that began nearly three years ago has resulted in lower speeds, fewer accidents and overall less crime, according to the Pebble Beach Community Services District.
Since October 2006, California Highway Patrol officers have regularly patrolled Del Monte Forest, an effort the PBCSD says has been highly successful.

Don’t Anger The Deer

Mad Deer

“The deer are becoming move aggressive with people and dogs,” said Elizabeth Conti-Yeo, P.G. animal control officer.“Because it’s the fawning season, they perceive dogs as a threat or a predator.”

“We suggest people carry a walking stick to fan in front of them to keep the deer back, but not necessarily hit them,” she said.

I’d carry a 30.06, but that would get you tossed in jail.

Calling Anyone Crazy Enough To Be P.G. City Manager

Hmm, they never did call me back…

Pacific Grove’s list of city manager prospects has been whittled down from an unwieldy pool of 112 to just a handful which may include a current city employee.

The new city manager will have to tackle the city’s dire financial problems, making Becklenberg or someone else with a financial background a good choice for the post.

$7,000,000 High School Football Field Almost Done

Not quite what I had in mind when the bond measures said renovate the schools – there may be no heat and the bathrooms are locked, but hey, we can play football on artificial grass.

Breaker Stadium 6 Million

. . . in two weeks, the school will have a new $7 million athletic stadium to replace the dilapidated one in use since the 1960s.

The stadium features upgraded aluminum bleachers, synthetic grass field, snack bar, scoreboard, field house and wheelchair access. It also features an upgraded parking lot and walkway to the field.

Tom Pollacci’s Other Victims Stepping Forward?

Tom Pollacci

Deputy district attorney Cristina Johnson had asked the judge to up the bail to $1 million, citing public safety issues.

Since Pollacci’s arrest in early March hit the media, Johnson said, she had heard from new victims every day. “I received reports from eight different agencies, and calls from women who had been victims themselves or pointed to other women who had been victims,” she said.

Scott agreed but imposed several conditions of bail on Pollacci. He must remain at home, and may be subject to electronic monitoring, though he’ll be allowed to leave the Pebble Beach house of his parents to meet with his lawyers.

This grown man lives with his parents? OK, couple this with the other statement by his own defense team:

Pollacci was accompanied to his arraignment Tuesday by defense investigator Richard Lee, who wrote a presentence report in the 1993 case describing Pollacci as a spoiled, self-centered man who was guilty of being presumptuous and using poor judgment, but who did not realize he was having sex without consent. According to the report, Pollacci told Lee that he had come to realize through therapy that he never learned any “boundaries” in his life.

It all seems so clear now. If a minor commits a crime or causes damage, the parent of the child is held liable. This sex offender has not grown up. The boycott group is right, go ahead put some more blame on the Pollacci family, they might just deserve it. Shop for whisky, cigars & porn anywhere but their stores.
