P.G. Architect Guilty Of Contractor Crimes

A Pacific Grove architect has pleaded guilty to one felony count of failure to register as an employer and one misdemeanor count of failing to secure workers’ compensation insurance.

An Insurance Department investigation found that Robert Gunn, 70, hadn’t purchased workers’ compensation insurance prior to an employee’s injury.

In May 2013, Department of Insurance officials received information that Gunn told his employees he didn’t have workers’ compensation insurance, but if he did, he would take the cost of the insurance out of their paychecks.

Gunn was interviewed while employing contractors at a rental property. Investigators determined one of his employees had been injured on the job and Gunn paid for his chiropractic treatments.

An effort to put an initiative on the ballot to rollback public pensions in “America’s Last Hometown” was defeated Thursday in Monterey County Superior Court.

City employee pensions have been a major issue in Pacific Grove for years, but Mayor Bill Kampe said Thursday afternoon he hoped everyone could now move forward.

“We’d like to invite the energy of that (initiative) group to really join us on a forward-looking basis to deal with some of the issues that we think are the major obstacles at the state level to managing pension costs,” he said.

P.G. Shores Attract Crime

The shoreline and recreation trail are definitely not safe after dark.

Just after midnight, an officer contacted a man parked near the ocean front on the 1600 block of Ocean View Boulevard. The man was allegedly in possession of a loaded and concealed weapon on himself and having drug paraphernalia in his vehicle.

Santos Gervacio Benitez, 18, of Salinas, was arrested and booked into Monterey County Jail.

At 11 a.m. an officer saw a man smoking marijuana adjacent to the waterfront on the 1700 block of Sunset Drive. Another man was contacted near the water. Both men, under 21, were found in possession of alcohol and had been illegally collecting marine life from teh tide pools.

Alvaro Miranda, 20, and Jesus Miranda Gonzalez, 19, both of San Jose, were arrested on suspicion of a minor in possession of alcohol and illegally taking animals from a marine sanctuary.

On Thursday, the state water board announced it had awarded the city a $3.3 million grant to fund part of a planned $4.8 million project aimed at improving a storm drain and sewer pipelines near the beach. The drain and pipelines are believed to be the source of poor water quality due to human bacteria contamination. The beach is regularly subject to public warnings and closure due to poor water quality.

Check the KSBW video – the news reporter is at the same place I was recently. Add that to the shocking turn from trying to shoo the gulls away to cutting off the attraction by covering the trash around town, something that lighthouseavenue.com has been preaching for years.

Was Moe heard describing the trash can covers as “the best thing ever to happen in P.G.”?

The city’s public works department is experimenting with a new type of trash can to see if it can perturb the influx of gulls.

“Without a doubt, it is working. The seagulls cannot penetrate it and go down and pick up the food,” said Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce president Moe Ammar.

The city is looking to retrofit all trash cans on the recreational trail with the new can style to get rid of gulls, but officials said residents also need to stop feeding the birds.

City officials said without an active food source, the gulls will hopefully go elsewhere.

The city is planning to power-wash the sidewalks the first two weeks of June. The runoff water will be collected and sent to the local pollution control agency.

On a related matter, the city’s economic development manager recommends that Pacific Grove follow the lead of such cities as Escondido and Hercules to put more sizzle in the downtown district economy.

The truck driver told police the vehicle lost power as it was headed uphill and began rolling backward, police spokeswoman Cmdr. Leslie Sonne said.

She said it went about 300 feet, including through the intersection at Fillmore Street, before ripping into the garage and part of the kitchen of the damaged home.

Francisco Cerritos, who was hired by the United Farm Workers of America in 1998, alleges in a May 2 lawsuit filed in Monterey County Superior Court that the UFW broke numerous state labor laws, including failing to pay him overtime, and to provide meal breaks and itemized paychecks. He also alleges the UFW retaliated against him for helping forming an employees union within the UFW.
