Passionfish Sustains The Rats

Politics, sheesh

Assembly member John Laird, D-Santa Cruz, today named “green” restaurateur Cindy Walter of Pacific Grove as Woman of the Year for the 27th Assembly District.

Walter and her husband own Passionfish restaurant, the first officially “green” restaurant in Monterey County.

As the first officially “green” restaurant in Monterey County, Passionfish sets an example with a strict policy of sustainable and environmentally friendly purchasing. The staff is knowledgeable about this issue and how it affects what the restaurant uses and serves. Bon Appetit Magazine recognized the Walters as ‘sustainable seafood experts,’ in the “Best of 2006” cover focus published in January 2007.

Yah, save the dolphins, wash the spinach, sustain the raccoons. But what about the poor humans that live near the restaurant? They get blight and blocked sidewalks in the form of way too much trash generated by the first officially “green” restaurant that sends this much trash to the landfill.

“P.G. Remodel” Goes Awry

A “P.G. Remodel” is one of those house modifications where 90% of the house is replaced and then the square footage increases by another 90%. The resulting structure my have a slight resemblance to the original, but there is often only about 5% of the original building there.

Over at 419 Congress Avenue, here’s the original 500 square foot structure, working toward that 10% of original building.

Looks like too much was removed, 9% of house fell into 200% of basement.

Follow up: A hysterical preservation lady spoke at the next city council meeting urging that everything possible be done to restore the damage. If they care so much why did they allow the little salt box be ‘restored’ into a forest chalet in the first place?

Primo – Small Food Portions, Big Whines

The wine bar was a losing business prospect over at the Grove Bistro which stayed open for 9 months.

Can being open four days a week be a success? Will they add live music like the ‘pretending to be a bookstore’ coffee house or ‘pretending to be a home theater store’? The clock starts now.

Don’t forget that Big Wines attract crime.

Ex-sheriff’s Recruit Accused In New Monterey

A former Monterey County sheriff’s recruit pleaded not guilty this week to charges of rape and sodomy of an unconscious victim. Chad Michael Neuman, 38, was arrested Feb. 23 at his apartment in New Monterey after a woman told Monterey police he assaulted her in her home.

The woman told police she met Neuman the night before at Segovia’s bar on Lighthouse Avenue, said Deputy Chief Phil Penko. The two drank together and then went to the woman’s house, he said.

At some point, the woman victim said, she fell asleep. When she awoke, the woman told police, she found Neuman on top of her attempting to sexually assault her. “In colorful terms, she told him to get out,” Penko said. “He got his stuff and left.”

We Will Vote Again To Raise Taxes

Jeanne, if an extra penny on the dollar will drive your customers to Monterey, your fabrics are way to expensive already.

The Pacific Grove City Council voted unanimously to put a measure on the June 3 ballot that, if approved, would raise the sales tax from 7.25 percent to 8.25 percent, with the additional cent on the dollar going to the city general fund.

That 13.8 percent increase in the sales tax rate is expected to raise an additional $1.3 million annually in revenues, said city Director of Management and Budget Jim Becklenberg.

But Jeanne Graham, owner of the Handmaden craft and fabric store, argued that raising the sales tax will drive residents to shop in neighboring Monterey.

Farr Piggy

Farr made the remark Tuesday when Immigration and Customs Enforcement Chief Julie Meyers was addressing concerns about federal raids of illegal immigrants before the House Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, which Farr sits on.

“What happens is the public image of you becomes one of not this compassionate law enforcement agency but essentially a Gestapo-type agency that is knocking down doors,” Farr said, according to preliminary transcripts of the hearing.

Meyers interrupted Farr and said: “We are not the Gestapo.”

Replied Farr: “I appreciate that, and I know that. I’m just telling you that there is a very ill will public opinion in the counties I represent about ICE.”

Farr has not withdrawn the remark. He said it came from the impression many of his constituents have of ICE, which periodically rounds up people without proper documents and deports them.

Over in Sam’s represented county, crime is out of control, there are Mexican gang members shooting each other all over town at and hard working businesses getting robbed every week. Even the Mayor of Salinas had his home burglarized. It’s certainly not the ICE agents causing the crime wave, Sam the Sham shows his support for the criminals and not the protectors.
