NIMBYs Still Believe Affordable Means Ghetto

301 Grand story continues. I recall the apartments that were there were classic P.G. Old, kind of sketchy but cheap.

Neighbors said they have no complaints with the building under construction but object to the one containing affordable units, which is also two stories. Based on elevation poles outlining the proposed project, it is lower than a three-story neighbor on Fountain Avenue to the project’s north boundary.

Pam Silkwood, a Carmel land-use attorney representing Carolyn Hill, who owns the three-story house behind the project, told the Architectural Review Board that the affordable units “impair the desirability of investment or occupation of the neighborhood.”

Restaurant Sewage On McAbee Beach

550 Wave street is Wave Street Cafe. Maybe the gulls liked it.

On Saturday around 1:30 p.m. a complaint of sewer odor was logged coming from 550 Wave Street. Monterey public works crews determined that it was a broken sewer lateral that was leaching into an adjacent storm drain, Anderson said. The storm drain leads to Monterey Bay near McAbee Beach behind Cannery Row.

The beach remained closed Tuesday pending completion of repairs to the sewer line that occurred on private property where a lateral pipe from the property ran toward the sewer main on Wave Street in Monterey.

And this time, we really mean it.

Empty Beach Tarps

Moe is one of the culprits it seems.

Moe Ammar, president of the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce and a fan of the pageant for 32 years, said he’s setting up shifts for family members an hour at a time.

“The chamber is supportive of the new initiative,” Ammar said. “The board of directors of the Festival of Lanterns has been going to the city for years talking about this.”

The decision is causing a bit of a dust-up in the community. Ammar said the neighborhood social media platform Nextdoor has been lit up in past days with debates over the decision.

And City Manager Where’s Ben Harvey equates it to blocking the sidewalks. See anyone picking up tables, signs, trash cans and putting them in a collection spot?

In the days leading up to the festivities, unattended items like blankets, tarps, chairs or cones will be picked up by city crews and taken to a collection bin in the park. Signs are posted at the park to alert attendees of the new prohibition, said Ben Harvey, Pacific Grove’s city manager.

“This is a public area and it’s no different than putting out chairs on sidewalks,” Harvey said. “They don’t have the right to do that. It prevents access to public property and no one has the right to claim the area for their own.”

Pack Of Loose Dogs Kill Beloved Cat

Put the dogs down

Calvin, a large cat who was well known to everyone at Robert Down Elementary School, was in the driveway of the house where he lives on 13th Street when two Siberian huskies attacked him. Calvin was seriously injured in the attack and underwent surgeries to try to bring him back to health.

The owner of the huskies, Carolina Shea, was issued a notice to appear in court on a citation for dogs at large,

Ride A Pedicab From Cannery Row To Patisserie Bechler

Sure. I’d pay dollar for that.

Hosler said pedicabs were prohibited in the past in Monterey, but that gets kind of dicey. Elizabeth Caraker, the housing and community development manager, said pedicabs have always been allowed by California Vehicle Code.

• Operators must pay a $194.12 fee that is calculated on the time a Monterey Police Department services assistant to process the permit.

• No one younger than 21 may operate a pedicab.

• Operators must possess liability insurance.

• Passenger fares must be posted in the pedicab vehicle.

• Pedicabs must park in the same parking spaces as cars.

• Permits can be revoked if the operator is convicted of a violent crime.

• Permits can be revoked if the operator is convicted of any misdemeanor or felony driving under the influence charge.

• Permits can be revoked if the operator is convicted of any sex crime that requires them to register as sex offender.

Driver Dives Off Wharf

Or Diver Drives off wharf. Not sure what KSBW is reporting. Was it Fisherman’s Wharf or Wharf #2?

UBoat Commander

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. near the end of Fisherman’s Wharf #2. All three people were pulled out of the water with a firetruck ladder.

Two people were sent to a nearby hospital with minor injuries related to being in the cold water, according to Monterey fire officials.

Pride Flags Fly In P.G.

PG PD Pride Flag

Not everyone’s pleased, though. The rainbow flags — which the city is flying in place of the city flag at the police station — have annoyed some citizens, including Larry Esquivel, who sent a letter to the city council this week.

“I have nothing against the flying of the LGBTQ flag,” Esquivel said, “but it should not be on the same pole as the United States flag. It can be on a separate pole or on the wall of the building.” Esquivel, a retired reserve Pacific Grove Fire captain and police officer and Vietnam veteran, said the stars and stripes “means a lot” to him and others, including military veterans.

The word “united,” he said, “means all of us; race, sex, religion and so on.” Esquivel also cautioned displaying the pride flag “just to make a statement.” Doing so, he said, could open the door for “NRA, KKK, religious, Confederate” and other flags to be flown at city hall

Convicted P.G. Con Arrested On Probation Violation

The more ‘consignment shops’ you have, the bigger chance of being defrauded.

Michael Schellhous, who was convicted last year of stealing money from elderly clients through his Pacific Grove consignment shop and subsequently sentenced to four years’ felony probation and six months in Monterey County Jail was arrested by Pacific Grove police again this week for violating his probation.
Schellhous, 51, remained in county jail Wednesday after being picked up by police June 18 for being with another probationer.

Last August, Schellhous pleaded guilty to felony grand theft by embezzlement, felony grand theft from an elderly person, and misdemeanor petty theft from an elderly person for stealing $37,000 from at least five victims through his P.G. consignment shop, Vintique Boutique.

Runaway US Open Service Cart Sends Five To Hospital

Never leave the power switch on when parking.

The collision occurred at 10:15 a.m. on the 16th Fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links when a vendor was making deliveries on a cart loaded with boxes while the course was packed with tens of thousands of spectators.
“The vendor parked and walked away from the golf cart,” Madueño said, at which point a box on the front seat  tumbled onto the floor, landing on the accelerator.
Unoccupied and out of control, the cart traveled straight for a stretch and then turned, striking several people.
