Robert Gunn, 70, of Pacific Grove, pleaded guilty to one felony count of failure to register as an employer and one misdemeanor count of failing to secure workers’ compensation insurance. A Department of Insurance investigation found that Gunn had not purchased workers’ compensation insurance prior to an employee’s injury.

“The underground economy is a multi-billion drain on California’s economy and hurts law abiding businesses,” said Commissioner Dave Jones. “Employers that cheat the system by not providing workers’ compensation not only risk employee safety but also contribute to higher costs for businesses and consumers.”

P.G.’s Police May Be Understaffed, But They Do Have Lidar

The Pacific Grove Police Department said a lot of drivers are from out-of-town and sometimes they don’t realize the speed limits are so low. So they’re using a special tool called Lidar, to detect speeds before the driver even sees the officer.

It was not Lidar, but a huge building that slowed down an out of town driver last week

Sgt. Lafata pulled over two drivers for speeding, among other violations. Both drivers got warnings this time. He said it pays to own up to your mistakes.

“To be honest with you that’s something that we don’t really get very often in this line of work, so I do like to reward that,” said Sgt. Lafata.

If Lidar isn’t working correctly, Sgt. Lafata said any citations written during its use are thrown out.

A Pacific Grove architect has pleaded guilty to one felony count of failure to register as an employer and one misdemeanor count of failing to secure workers’ compensation insurance.

An Insurance Department investigation found that Robert Gunn, 70, hadn’t purchased workers’ compensation insurance prior to an employee’s injury.

In May 2013, Department of Insurance officials received information that Gunn told his employees he didn’t have workers’ compensation insurance, but if he did, he would take the cost of the insurance out of their paychecks.

Gunn was interviewed while employing contractors at a rental property. Investigators determined one of his employees had been injured on the job and Gunn paid for his chiropractic treatments.

An effort to put an initiative on the ballot to rollback public pensions in “America’s Last Hometown” was defeated Thursday in Monterey County Superior Court.

City employee pensions have been a major issue in Pacific Grove for years, but Mayor Bill Kampe said Thursday afternoon he hoped everyone could now move forward.

“We’d like to invite the energy of that (initiative) group to really join us on a forward-looking basis to deal with some of the issues that we think are the major obstacles at the state level to managing pension costs,” he said.

The over-produced and failure at content kind of mirrors the whole effort of promoting Pacific Grove as a worthy destination full of fun and excitement. A big 8 out of 10 on the schlock meter.
