CheckMate Not Likely Cause Of Illness

Illnesses reported by Monterey Peninsula residents after September’s spraying to combat the light brown apple moth likely weren’t caused by CheckMate products, according to a study released Friday.

Findings released Friday by the Department of Pesticide Regulation suggest that exposure to a high dose of airborne CheckMate microcapsule particles could cause eye, skin or respiratory irritation. But the report said that the application of the product over Monterey County was extremely low, and it is unlikely the low levels could result in health problems.

The application of pheromones that took place was done at rates that fell below the proposed rate of 20 grams of active ingredient per acre, the report states.

A judge Thursday ruled there will be separate trials for Soledad brothers charged with the 1997 murder of Monterey High School student Kristopher Olinger, in part because one of the brothers allegedly confessed to the crime.

A jogger found Olinger’s body on the Pacific Grove Recreation Trail on Sept. 19, 1997, the morning after the 17-year-old set out to complete a late-night school photo assignment.

He was beaten and stabbed more than 24 times, and thrown over a cliff along the trail, before he dragged himself back to a turnout where he was found.

Sailboat Capsizes – Check The Cause & Date

About 2:40 p.m., Coast Guard officials arrived at the scene to find another boat had already fished the three people out of the water and was in the middle of towing the submerged sailboat to a buoy. Coast Guard Petty Officer Matt Brown said no injuries were reported and strong winds may have been a factor in the incident.

Normal Life Put On Hold So People Can Jog In The Streets

A traditionally slow Big Sur Half-Marathon weekend got even worse for businesses at the Breakwater Cove Marina on Saturday.

“If it was any other Saturday, I wouldn’t be standing here talking to you because it would be too busy,” Leny Rapisarda said. “This isn’t just about us. It’s the kayak shop and the dive shop and the entire Monterey waterfront that gets shut down for the entire weekend. It’s not so much about the marathon, it’s about the way the city handles it.”

Why is it called the Big Sur Half-Marathon? It’s not in Big Sur, no where near. Since it’s on a slow weekend and only half shouldn’t it be called the Not In Big Sur Half Fast Marathon?

Love And Marriage In Pebble Beach

A 59-year-old Pebble Beach woman was arrested tonight on suspicion of striking her 80-year-old husband, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said.

About 9 p.m., the pair became involved in an altercation at their home at San Carlos and Broncho roads in Pebble Beach, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Both wife and husband received bruises to their arms, but deputies determined the woman was the primary aggressor and arrested her. They also requested that a criminal complaint of spousal abuse by the husband be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office.

The names of the couple were not released.

Jeffrey Flathers – Legend In His Own Mind

“Press Release” sent to the Hear-Old:

“The Citizens of Pacific Grove have spoken with a thunderous roar,” thundered the roaring Flathers, a former member of the city’s budget and finance committee. “The people’s demand for a return to common sense in local government spending couldn’t be clearer, and I offer my congratulations to residents for securing this seminal victory for Democracy.”

Each tax measure had about 2000 no votes. Not too thunderous with a population of 15,000.

Kook. Was his own losing bid for PG City Council a “thunderous roar” too?

Dead Dog Owner Files Lawsuit To Kill Another Dog

Olga

A TV news anchorwoman has filed a lawsuit against the City of Pacific Grove seeking to overturn a ruling that spared a black Labrador believed to have mauled her Maltese to death in front of the Pacific Grove Post Office in July.

In August, a city-appointed hearing officer decided the Labrador, owned by a Southern California woman, should be permanently banished from the city but not euthanized. The dog was returned to its family. But Olga Ospina wanted a different result. “Please help me, put this dog down” she said at the hearing Aug. 16.

Colangelo Vows To Punish In Case Of Gay Cop’s Lawsiut

Pacific Grove’s city manager vowed this week to punish any city employee who harassed, intimidated or discriminated against a gay police officer who has filed a claim with the city alleging such mistreatment.

Police Sgt. Darrin Smolinski filed the claim in August saying fellow officers made jokes and ridiculed him because he is gay. Smolinski also says he was repeatedly turned down for promotions and was retaliated against by a former police chief.

“I want to get the facts,” city manager Jim Colangelo said Monday. “I want to know if these allegations are true. If they are true, there will be consequences for the people involved. We don’t tolerate this type of behavior.”
