P.G. High Students Arrested In Real Life Fight Club

Fight Club

Four of the arrested juveniles have been charged with misdemeanor battery and fighting in public. The fifth, a teen girl, faces a charge of felony assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly hitting another girl in the face with a full beer can. The victim needed stitches. The altercation between the girls happened while they were waiting for an organized fight to begin, Nyunt said.

Another recent fight, which was not one of the organized skirmishes, left one of the combatants with a cracked spine, which was nonparalyzing, and a broken hand, police said.

The investigated fights, including one that was video-recorded and put on YouTube, have taken place at Arnett Park, George Washington Park and Pacific Grove High’s parking lot.

$7,000,000 High School Football Field Almost Done

Not quite what I had in mind when the bond measures said renovate the schools – there may be no heat and the bathrooms are locked, but hey, we can play football on artificial grass.

Breaker Stadium 6 Million

. . . in two weeks, the school will have a new $7 million athletic stadium to replace the dilapidated one in use since the 1960s.

The stadium features upgraded aluminum bleachers, synthetic grass field, snack bar, scoreboard, field house and wheelchair access. It also features an upgraded parking lot and walkway to the field.

Shoe Game 2008 – Carmel 49, P.G 7

Carmel PG Shoe

49 to 7?

Carmel and Pacific Grove high schools used to have a ceremonial bonfire before their football teams squared off in the county’s most storied rivalry.

That was until 1952, when Charlie Higuera and some of his fellow Pacific Grove seniors sneaked over to Carmel to light their rivals’ pile of wood — the night before the bonfire was set to happen.

The antic got Higuera into a heap of trouble, but he can laugh about it now.

“And that was the last time they had a bonfire,” he said Thursday at his Pacific Grove grocery store, Grove Market.

While it extinguished a pregame tradition, the prank helped fuel a rivalry that is still going strong more than a half century later.

Mr. Bell – New P.G.H.S. Principal

Interesting – a principal that has more than a few years of experience in P.G. schools. Kudos to the district.

Bell first worked at the high school in 1983 as a math teacher and as the head swimming coach. He moved on to principal at Robert Down Elementary and Pacific Grove Middle School, where he last worked.

Superintendent Ralph Porras says promoting Bell to principal made sense because of his knowledge of and history with the district.

And what about education on skills that we use everyday?

Measure X PG High Stadium

The decades-old stadium will get new aluminum bleachers, a synthetic grass field, snack bar, scoreboard, field house and wheelchair access. The project began June 7 and is expected to be finished next spring.

The project is being paid for by taxpayers through a $42 million bond made possible through Measure D, which voters approved in June 2006 to renovate P.G. schools.

“In the wintertime it gets so muddy that it’s impossible for the kids to play a good game of soccer,” McCord said. “With artificial turf, the ball is so much more responsive.”

Yah, responsive balls. That will help me out in later life . .

Streaker At Shoe Game

Streaker

An adult white man wearing a mask and thong-type underwear sprinted across the Breakers field at halftime of tonight’s Carmel-Pacific Grove football game, Salinas Californian Digital Editor Joey Delgado reported.

Just as the first half ended and the cheerleaders were preparing their halftime show, the man, about 6-2 and 200 pounds, broke from the home team’s side and ran from one end zone to midfield, Delgado said.

He then jumped the fence on the visitors’ side, ran through the crowd, jumped another fence and escaped before authorities could catch him, Delgado said.

The Hear-Old reported that the streaker was caught . .

a juvenile was detained for “streaking” across the field during halftime. He was taken to the police station and released to a guardian, police said. No charges are pending.

And The Pine Cone reported what we all expected – the streaker was a Carmel High Freshman. No guy from PG would wear thong underwear.

The atmosphere was exciting, with cheers coming from both sidelines. The halftime show included a special guest appearance from an excited Carmel freshman wishing to show his school pride in a uniquely exposed manner.

According to Pacific Grove Police Cmdr. John Nyunt, the streaker was chased down and gave up without incident. Officers turned him over to his parents without charging him with a crime.
