Gulls Fight The Power

Dragan Djuric, 50, of Wichita, Kansas, and his wife were eating ice cream New Year’s Eve on the boardwalk at Main Beach when a flock of birds attacked them, Laguna Beach police Sgt. Jeff Calvert said.

One bird hit Djuric’s wife in the head and tried to take the ice cream. Djuric was defecated on.

The couple dropped the frozen food and Djuric began hitting the birds with a stick, Calvert said.

Djuric was cited and released on suspicion of animal cruelty.

Raccoons Stepping Up

“Fall always brings on an increase in ‘coon activity,'” said Pacific Grove animal control officer Elizabeth Yeo, “due to the nature of the animal.”

officials said the trick to keeping raccoons at bay is to make backyards and businesses uninviting: Secure garbage can lids, pick up fallen fruit, avoid leaving pet food and water bowls outside at night, and close off crawl spaces under houses and decks.

Raccoons Stepping Up

Don’t Sustain The Raccoons

Of special concern in the Monterey Bay area is humans and domestic animals coming in close contact with raccoons. Besides the fact that raccoons in urban or suburban areas tend to be aggressive and can attack pets and people, they are also carriers of the roundworm parasite called Baylisascaris procyonis.

Raccoons become infected with this roundworm either by ingesting infective eggs from contaminated feces of other raccoons, or by eating infected small animals (rabbits, rodents and birds). Raccoons are asymptomatic carriers, which means that the parasite typically doesn’t cause them any problems, but they shed eggs in their feces which become infective to other animals three to four weeks after they are excreted.

Power Grid Shuts Down for a RACCOON?

Raccoon Pwns PGe

When PG&E workers realized the animal was sitting on the line, they shut off the power, said company spokesman Jeff Smith.

Here, however, the company — and thousands of customers who needed electricity — were unlucky: The raccoon was licking its paws on the piece of equipment that shuts down electric flow.

“That meant we had to go to a bigger one down the line,” Smith said.

Instead of 200 or 300 customers, about 6,600 houses and shops in Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove and Monterey’s Cannery Row were in the dark, he said.

P.G. Raccoon Massacre

Ballard St 080205 Wildlife

Pacific Grove has trapped and killed so many raccoons in the past couple of weeks that the SPCA of Monterey County refuses to take any more wildlife carcasses from the city.

The city’s animal-control truck showed up unexpectedly at the animal shelter on the Monterey-Salinas Highway Saturday with 40 dead raccoons to be disposed of, said Peggy Miars, a spokeswoman for the SPCA.

They had been trapped in back yards of city employees and asphyxiated with carbon dioxide gas pumped into the traps.

“We were surprised and disappointed because the city said they weren’t going to do this,” Miars said …
