A letter of intent to transfer operation of the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History to a nonprofit foundation was approved 5-2 Wednesday by the City Council.

The letter was endorsed unanimously April 21 by the Pacific Grove Museum Advisory Board and calls for transferring operation of the museum to the nonprofit Museum Foundation of Pacific Grove Inc.

The foundation has proposed a public-private partnership with the city in which the museum building, collection and grounds would be leased to the foundation for a 15-year period starting July 1.

The letter came with a list of add-on proposals, which dissenting council members Carmelita Garcia and Alan Cohan said were too one-sided.

The letter to interim city manager Charlene Wiseman from Jason Burnett, president of the Museum Foundation of Pacific Grove Inc., proposes a public-private partnership between the city and the foundation in which the museum building, collection and grounds would be leased to the foundation for a 15-year period beginning July 1.

Burnett said the foundation believes that the museum “should continue to be a major cultural, educational and productive asset for the citizens of our area and our business community”

And the Mvsevm was skipped because . . .

A budget-cutting and revenue-enhancing program presented by Pacific Grove management and budget director Jim Becklenberg to his City Council Tuesday got a unanimous endorsement.

There was a slight reprieve for the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History.

He recommended cost reductions amounting to $833,000, including defunding the vacant deputy city manager position and a maintenance worker position, deferring a 9.8 percent raise for police and asking all other employees to take a 5 percent furlough, along with cuts in programs, supply purchases and operations.

Cannery Row Offers Shuttle Bus For ATT Golf

Park right next to the bus pickup in popular areas. P.G should have supported this shuttle instead of making people park all over the residential & beachfront areas, only to have to walk to the Mvsevm.

Hear What The Winter Tourists Come For

(Sacramento Bee)

Joke all you want about tourists from Modesto but they in my opinion are the most down to earth visitors and much more tolerable than L.A. refugees that end up wanting to move here.

They are looking for enriching experiences that don’t necessarily mean spending lots of money on big meals, paintings, fake country charm or pretentious hosts. They want to get away from home and go back with pictures and memories. Maybe a sweatshirt if they thought it was warm in the spring (hint: best souvenir sweatshirt is one from Mission Ranch, affordable and impressive).

Exploring Monterey during Winter

And there’s this: The tourists who crowd the peninsula in the high season will be absent. That means you’ll actually be able to tour the Monterey Bay Aquarium, find a parking space in Carmel, book a dinner reservation before 9:30 p.m. and ride on the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail without getting entangled in a six-bicycle pile-up.

Aquarium Employees To Help Staff Mvsevm

What could go wrong?

The Mvsevm

Workers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium will help staff the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History until the city can develop a long-term plan to hire employees and become profitable.
The staffing is necessary because the city, as part of a reorganization to save money, laid off the museum’s assistant curator and eliminated the museum director job, effective with the retirement of Paul Finnegan, who is leaving his post in January. “Some of the aquarium’s guest services people will be working the main floor of the museum,” city manager Jim Colangelo told The Pine Cone.

Changes to city rules to allow wine to be served at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History during special events will be considered Wednesday by the Pacific Grove City Council.

The master fee schedule adopted by the council in July includes a rental policy that prohibits serving alcohol at the museum.

Next, up for consideration is Casino Nights at the Library . .

P.G. Chamber Of Commerce, What’s Your Job?

By 7:30 a.m., however, Moe Ammar, president of the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce, was already fielding phone calls from Measure A supporters wondering why news reports said the rally would take place at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History.

Pacific Grove forbids political events in city facilities, let alone campaign signs on city property. City Manager Jim Colangelo said group events at the museum are supposed to benefit the facility.

Ammar, a 20-year resident of Pacific Grove, knows well the local rules. He said a news release announcing Thursday’s event apparently was misinterpreted. The rally was planned for the sidewalk in front of the museum — a public location perfectly acceptable for the event.

Measure A or no measure A, PG is not going to be growing much, given the degree of build out. But really, this should not be the PG Chamber’s focus.

Anyway, that unaccredited announcement was in the same paper reporting this story. It looks very much like the protest was going to be at the Mvsevm.

Sell Out The Mvsevm? Is Willoughby Nuts?

Excerpts of a commentary by Gene Barnes

So what Mr. Willoughby has in mind is not really a museum, but only a commercial gallery or an art co-op, which would probably go out of business in a few years, leaving the city with no museum and a large empty building.

Mr. Willoughby does not seem to appreciate the fact that our Natural History Museum is more than just a historic building. It is a local institution that continues to serve our community well after 123 years.

Willoughby
Jim Willoughby writes:

We have a budding community of artists and citizens who appreciate art and want a facility to have their work displayed. It would be an art museum that would work to bring traveling displays of the world’s great masters. Let’s face it, competition is healthy, and we can show Carmel and Monterey that Pacific Grove has its eye on an art museum as well.

Certainly the Pacific Grove Art Center with its membership of more than 500 could utilize the museum’s prime location at the heart of the city. It would be a center for artists to display and perhaps sell their work with a small commission to the city that would ease the tax burden. It would also serve as an educational center for schools with workshop space for hands-on activities.

Many small museums require a mandatory donation to help defray costs. This would – be greatly appreciated by the city fathers. Although I strongly support not doing away with a Pacific Grove community museum, I think its purpose and direction need to be redefined.
