Lovers Point Pool Reopening By Summer?

Kiddie Pool

The first pool just above the beach at Lovers Point was a saltwater plunge built in 1938. The current one, which was closed last summer because of a host of maintenance issues, was built in 1972. For years, the city held swim lessons and recreational swimming programs at the pool.

The city didn’t have the money to pay for pool repairs, so the community fundraising drive was organized. The goal was $250,000 — an amount that would probably provide an operating-fund endowment and swim-lesson scholarships.

A city busy spending money on image consultants and unnecessary street remodels leaves little for project the residents can enjoy.

About That $5.75 Per Square Foot Rent At The Burger Shack . .

Grill renter Joe Cavallaro was hiding the fact that the rent included the eating area that the grill posts signs at, reminding us all that the tables are for ‘Grill patrons ONLY.

Cavallaro said the snack stand is only 300 square feet, making the monthly rental $5.75 per square foot under the city’s latest offer.

City Manager Thomas Frutchey said Tuesday that Cavallaro’s lease area amounts to 800 square feet, including the adjacent outdoor patio where customers sit and eat their snacks, and a storage room for restaurant supplies.

That brings the square-footage rate to about $2.16 a month, similar to that of other commercial properties, Frutchey said.

Welcome to the reality of P.G.

And who said that the Grill was open “every day for the past 22 years?”. Maybe if it was open they would make more money.

A beloved burger joint that has been in business for over two decades in Pacific Grove, said its getting the cold shoulder from the city. This, after a new lease agreement for The Grill at Lover’s Point Park means a rent increase.

Every day for the past 22 years Joe and Paula Cavallaro have worked side by and side, serving burgers, fries, just about anything. While business has had its ups and downs, Joe Cavallaro said they have managed to make it work.

“My wife and I are working it together, we’re doing the best we can,” said Cavallaro.

But their 10-year lease is up and they are now dealing with something unexpected. Cavallaro said the city has proposed a new lease one that he thinks is unreasonable.

Coastal Commission OKs OBH Remodel

Plans for a major remodeling of the former Old Bath House Restaurant in Pacific Grove have won approval from the state Coastal Commission.

The 3,775-square-foot restaurant will be operated by Ted and Cindy Walter, owner of Passionfish, also in downtown Pacific Grove.

Cindy Walter said the new restaurant will be casual fine dining and won’t have the seafood emphasis that Passionfish has.

Walter said she and her husband haven’t decided on a name for the restaurant, but it won’t be the Old Bath House.

Lovers Point Restrooms Locked Up

There once was a full time employee to do nothing but maintain bathrooms in the park? Where was that employee when it was “bad then”?

“It’s malicious, filthy,” she said. “There’s a very dirty, malicious group of people out there these days.”

Two years ago, the city had a person available all day to tend to the park restrooms, she said, and the problem was “bad then. It’s worse now.”

New Swan Boat

A replica of the glass-bottom swan boats that once plied the shallows around Lovers Point in Pacific Grove has been put on display there by the Pacific Grove Heritage Society.

The swan boat was christened the Margruss, after Margaret and Russell Sprague.

The project was financed by $14,000 in donations to the society, Honegger said. The Heritage Society plans to place a plaque with the boat and a ceremony may be held in July.

I remember taking rides in the originals. That would be a great thing to have back again.swan boat postcard

Council Approves Old Bath House Restaurant Remodel

admin’s concept:
Old Bath House Wienerschnitzel

The plan also calls for expansion of the restaurant from 92 to 128 seats, the addition of a 570-square-foot outdoor seating deck and ADA improvements within the restaurant, including a wheelchair lift, bathrooms and seating configuration.

The Old Bath House shut down in November 2005 after the city decided not to renew the lease with longtime operator Dave Bindel, who got behind about $30,000 in rent.

The concept also includes demolishing the Lovers Point public restrooms, which mayor Dan Cort called an “eyesore,” and installing new ones on the first floor of the restaurant.

So the thousands spent on repairing the fire damaged cinder block restrooms were a waste of money?

The kiddie pool at Lovers Point would also be removed and in its place a year-round picnic area would be built.

There goes another thing that the residents use, to be replaced by another picnic area where weddings take place.

Just In Time For The Triathlon At Pacific Grove: Study finds Human waste On Lovers Point Beach

Lovers Point Sewer Pipe

A study by Stanford University scientists on bacteria, beach sand and surf water found traces of human waste on the beach at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove.

The Stanford study showed contaminated beach sand can be a source for bacteria in coastal waters. It found detectable levels of enterococci bacteria on 91 percent of the beaches and traces of E. coli on 62 percent. They found higher levels of the bacteria at beaches surrounded by developed areas.

At Lovers Point, researchers found that enterococci bacteria could wash from dry sand to the sea at levels high enough to trigger a beach health advisory.
