Good Old Rainy Days

Moe, what happened to the Benz?

Chamber of Commerce president Moe Ammar, mounted in an electric car, rallied his troops under lowering clouds and the threat of high winds and rain that had already driven away a block’s worth of craft vendors’ booths on Lighthouse Avenue.

Most craft vendors reacted to a memo sent by Ammar Saturday that the county Office of Emergency Services predicted heavy rains and winds of 40 mph to 50 mph beginning at 5a.m. Sunday by folding their tents and stealing away in the night.

By 10 a.m., no storm had materialized.

God Rainy Days

Sunday rain closed down most of the ‘days by noon. Saturday was cold. Parade was so-so. Was better in the real good old days . .

It started with a group of women getting together in downtown Pacific Grove to exchange recipes over tea and cookies.

Within a few years, local merchants caught on that the annual gathering could be a good thing for the community, and they began setting up booths and organizing events. Pacific Grove’s spring festival continued to grow until, 53 years later, Good Old Days is not only the city’s biggest event, but the largest vending event in Monterey County.

Pacific Grove’s annual community event will be April 10 to 11. Good Old Days will feature more than 240 vendors from 12 states displaying arts, crafts and other wares. There will also music, entertainment and 30 food booths at the street fair, the largest arts and crafts gathering in Monterey County.

We are disappointed, of course, that The Weekly seems to adhere to the philosophy that if you can’t say something snarky about The Herald, don’t say anything at all.

There was no mention of The Herald’s stirring and impressive victory anywhere in The Weekly’s Thursday edition. Not a peep out of Squid. No back-handed dig from the Forum.

Good Old Days In The New Century

Yah, all this is sustainable carbon neutral event. Sure.

For more than fifty years it’s been one of the largest music and arts festivals on the Central Coast. It all started with a parade down Pine Avenue Saturday morning; it features carnival rides, hundreds of entertainers, and food.

Special events include a dance competition that’s open to the public. Organizers have tabbed the Good Old Days as a carbon neutral event.

Was crowded – looks like more people in one day than in every farmers market ever held.

Why Do They Call It The Green Spot?

Looks real brown to me.

Green Spot Dump 2

Substainable P.G. cannot get enough gray water to sustain a few weeds. It’s been there a month, and there never seems to be anyone there. There really is not much interest in this sustainable stuff beyond the small cult of Agenda 21 followers.

For the past several months, three groups have been working to render the neglected little spot green. The one-room building’s 650 square feet are rather drab at first glance, but it’s a work in progress. Applied Solar employees have hung photos of local photovoltaic installations along one wall. Sustainable PG’s Joy Colangelo painted waves, stars and a jellyfish over the bullet holes in the window.

Ultimately, the G-Spot’s enthusiasts envision the space as a magnet for eco-oriented meetings, potlucks and live music – a place for the community to experiment in shades of green.

While checking the mail, I took a stroll up and down The Street. The weather was real warm this year. Not much pizazz, the usual high cost carnival goods and a few distinct items.

Downtown Farm Reborn?

This is the Green Spot, a collaboration between Applied Solar and two local environmental groups. Only a few months old, the quirky little property is evolving into a vortex for all things local and green.

Three groups will unveil the Green Spot at the Good Old Days celebration. Fifteen booths, displays and demos will show locals how to shrink their eco-footprints by planting trees, building compost bins, installing solar-energy systems, setting up cisterns, cleaning green, curbing trash and auditing home energy use.

Can I get a tax cut for this? How much more would Jose the gardener charge to compost my lawn trimmings? Is cabbage resistant to deer and raccoon poo? Do you really think the weekender homeowners are really going to buy this? Judging by the mountains of trash the businesses create, it shows that they wont. Who’s left to join the compost club, the dozen or so frequent attendees to the city council meetings?Brevity Comic Hippie 080609

Good Old Days Police Motorcycle Competition Canceled

Now there’s nothing to do at Good Old Days except buy overpriced schwag.

God Motors

The city’s police chief, Darius Engles, announced today that the Pacific Grove Motorcycle Competition has been canceled this year. Engles cited “the lack of private donations and the city budget restraints.

The competition has been running in Pacific Grove for 20 years in conjunction with the city’s Good Old Days in April. Engles said the event was, when it started in 1987, “the first of its kind” and attracted participants from throughout the western states.

Time To Start Charging For Events?

Some events are mostly for-profit operations, like the Good Old Days on Lighthouse Avenue. Charge them but anything involving kids and family should  be exempt.

The council is expected to review the 24 special events proposed for the period March 2008 through February 2009 with an eye to seeking reimbursement for city costs from some of them.

Traditional events that have been exempt from paying city service fees have included Good Old Days, the Fourth of July Celebration, Feast of Lanterns, the Concours Auto Rally, the Butterfly Parade, Pacific Grove High School Homecoming Parade, the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, Downtown Holiday Parade of Lights, and Stilwell’s Snow in the Park. The council could consider seeking reimbursement during the coming year from some or all of these events.
