“The Citizens of Pacific Grove have spoken with a thunderous roar,” thundered the roaring Flathers, a former member of the city’s budget and finance committee. “The people’s demand for a return to common sense in local government spending couldn’t be clearer, and I offer my congratulations to residents for securing this seminal victory for Democracy.”

Each tax measure had about 2000 no votes. Not too thunderous with a population of 15,000.

A TV news anchorwoman has filed a lawsuit against the City of Pacific Grove seeking to overturn a ruling that spared a black Labrador believed to have mauled her Maltese to death in front of the Pacific Grove Post Office in July.

In August, a city-appointed hearing officer decided the Labrador, owned by a Southern California woman, should be permanently banished from the city but not euthanized. The dog was returned to its family. But Olga Ospina wanted a different result. “Please help me, put this dog down” she said at the hearing Aug. 16.

Colangelo Vows To Punish In Case Of Gay Cop’s Lawsiut

Pacific Grove’s city manager vowed this week to punish any city employee who harassed, intimidated or discriminated against a gay police officer who has filed a claim with the city alleging such mistreatment.

Police Sgt. Darrin Smolinski filed the claim in August saying fellow officers made jokes and ridiculed him because he is gay. Smolinski also says he was repeatedly turned down for promotions and was retaliated against by a former police chief.

“I want to get the facts,” city manager Jim Colangelo said Monday. “I want to know if these allegations are true. If they are true, there will be consequences for the people involved. We don’t tolerate this type of behavior.”

Former Pacific Grove Mayor Florence Beckman Schaefer, 81, died Tuesday at her home in Issaquah, Wash., of cancer.

Born Sept. 7, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was raised in Buffalo, N.Y., and lived in Whittier from 1960 until she and her husband Jack moved to Pacific Grove in 1986.

Mrs. Schaefer was appointed to the Pacific Grove Architectural Review Board in 1987 by then-Mayor Morris Fisher.

She ran successfully for a two-year City Council term in 1988, and then ran for mayor in 1990, defeating longtime resident and former fire chief Don Gasperson. She again ran for City Council in 1992 and served until she resigned in 1995, pleading health reasons.

Tourist Trades Prepare For P.G. Tax Plans

The cities of Monterey and Pacific Grove are considering an additional room tax to pay for hospitality improvement districts to promote tourism.

Pacific Grove is considering becoming a bureau member in the tourism improvement district formed in January by the county and the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and levying an assessment on its visitor accommodation businesses. Those include bed-and-breakfast inns, motels, hotels and conference lodging establishments.

A protest hearing on forming the district has been set for Dec. 5 by the Pacific Grove City Council. A majority protest of businesses that be included in the district would stop its formation.

Wednesday, several business owners told the council that they were willing to join the proposed improvement district if the city did not raise its transient occupancy tax, or room tax.

An adult white man wearing a mask and thong-type underwear sprinted across the Breakers field at halftime of tonight’s Carmel-Pacific Grove football game, Salinas Californian Digital Editor Joey Delgado reported.

Just as the first half ended and the cheerleaders were preparing their halftime show, the man, about 6-2 and 200 pounds, broke from the home team’s side and ran from one end zone to midfield, Delgado said.

He then jumped the fence on the visitors’ side, ran through the crowd, jumped another fence and escaped before authorities could catch him, Delgado said.

The Hear-Old reported that the streaker was caught . .

a juvenile was detained for “streaking” across the field during halftime. He was taken to the police station and released to a guardian, police said. No charges are pending.

And The Pine Cone reported what we all expected – the streaker was a Carmel High Freshman. No guy from PG would wear thong underwear.

The atmosphere was exciting, with cheers coming from both sidelines. The halftime show included a special guest appearance from an excited Carmel freshman wishing to show his school pride in a uniquely exposed manner.

According to Pacific Grove Police Cmdr. John Nyunt, the streaker was chased down and gave up without incident. Officers turned him over to his parents without charging him with a crime.

Moth Spraying Canceled – People Still Report Sickness

For the 4th night in a row, the fog (and low cloud cover) caused the cancellation of the spraying of a phermone designed to help eradicate an invasive pest. The California Department of Food And Agriculture will try again tonight.

It was reported on KSCO that people from Santa Cruz still reported symptoms of reaction to the spraying. Even when the planes never took off.

“We’re faced with working with an additional $1.5 million in cuts.”

So said Pacific Grove Mayor Dan Cort on Wednesday as the City Council convened in the wake of an election that saw voters reject three tax measures the city hoped would bail it out of red ink.

The city had hoped passage of the measures would raise another $1.5 million, which, coupled with $500,000 in cuts made by City Manager Jim Colangelo through a staff reorganization approved by the council last month, would head off an anticipated $2 million deficit this time next year.

The measures would have lifted the business license tax ceiling, imposed a parcel tax and increased the sales tax.

The citizenry, Cort said, apparently chose cuts in city services over paying new taxes.

Councilwoman Lisa Bennett remarked on the low voter turnout. The city has about 9,000 registered voters, she said, and only 2,700 of them cast ballots.

Gay P.G. Cop Alleges Discrimination

Smolinski joined the department in 1997, and the claim states his troubles began in December 1999 when parking enforcement officer Rhonda Ramey filed a complaint against then-Police Chief Scott Miller, alleging that Miller failed to discipline a supervisor who had harassed her for being “bisexual” and having an “open marriage.”

Smolinski, in the claim that does not specify the damages he is seeking, says he sat in with Ramey – identified in the complaint only as “employee X” – in a meeting with Miller in January 2000, during which Miller allegedly said Ramey would regret bringing the complaint.

Ramey sent a letter to the Hear-Old but it was not published. She later posted it on an Internet message board. In the letter, she writes:

Changes to city rules to allow wine to be served at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History during special events will be considered Wednesday by the Pacific Grove City Council.

The master fee schedule adopted by the council in July includes a rental policy that prohibits serving alcohol at the museum.
