Riders should be schooled on style

Since “slapping a female pedestrian on the head” clearly demonstrates a lack of style, perhaps the “Style Man” from Bicycling Magazine could host a seminar for local riders to explain the true essence of “Style.”

For example, there is a lack of style when the Recreation Trail is used as a criterium course for racing.

“Riders yelling at pedestrians” not only lacks style, it is a psychological call for help by riders who are consistently left behind on their local club rides.

Pedestrians could show some empathy to riders, since it is pretty difficult to keep your legs shaved, match the color of your clothes to the color of your bike, monitor your heart rate and rpms and learn words like: criterium, peloton, and bello.

The City Council could issue each rider a copy of the law to give to pedestrians, along with a stern warning when pedestrians stray into the “Bike Only” lane; of course this completely lacks style. “Style Man” might simply suggest riding next to the interloping female and say, “Hello, isn’t Monterey Bay beautiful (bello).” Now that’s style.

Long Lead Times At Crime Lab

According to PGPD detective Adam Sepagan, Patrick James Ayers stole liquor from the Pacific Grove Safeway on June 19, 2008.

The suspect escaped, but the officer recovered the bottle of hard alcohol the man dropped, and police managed to lift some fingerprints from its surface, according to Sepagan.

“We submitted the prints to the Monterey County crime lab, they were able to find a match, and we were able to get him ID’ed,” he explained. Because more serious crimes take priority in the lab, months had passed before a technician had time to run the prints through the system.

Pebble Beach Hiring Fewer Temp Workers At Crosby

Guess they are using more P.B. full time employees. I’d do the same, I’d rather give my workers the overtime $$ than to temps.

The jobs range from food and beverage, to cashiers, and shuttle drivers, however when some people who are normally hired to work the event showed up to fill out their applications they were turned away and told they would not be hired. According to Pebble Beach management the economy is to blame.

Traffic Commission Investigating Rowdy Recreation Trail Cyclists

I was constantly reminded of the rules by the guy in the Tam O’Shanter when taking my kids on the trail. Set one foot on the blacktop when he’s around and it was a verbal harassment.

Commission Chairman George Shayne told the City Council on Wednesday that the commission would like to see Pacific Grove bring its trail regulations in line with those of other cities the trail passes through.

He said Pacific Grove is the only city that cites pedestrians for walking on the bike path of its section of the Rec Trail and “it isn’t working.”

Instead, he said, some bicyclists seem to have a sense of entitlement and resent pedestrians who stray from the footpath to the paved bike path as they whiz by.

The commission has received complaints since the 1990s of bicyclists yelling and screaming at pedestrians, and it even got one report of a cyclist slapping a female pedestrian on the back of the head as he rode by.

Pedestrian Hit By Car – David Avenue

A 79-year-old Pacific Grove man suffered a severe head injury when he was struck by a car near the Country Club Gate Shopping Center about 8p.m. Friday.

Pacific Grove police said the man apparently was attempting to cross the street in the 2800 block of David Avenue when a westbound vehicle hit him. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated, police said.

There are crosswalks in the middle of the block. There are signs, too but maybe raising the speed limit to 30 mph in a dense neighborhood was not a good idea.

Dogs And Their Owners – Crazy?

Driving to a place to walk the dog. Kind of like taking an escalator to the gym.

Over the past three years, the public has been illegally parking and driving in the fire lane area at the Congress Avenue entrance to Rip Van Winkle Open Space.

They have also been parking along the road and driving over tree roots. Alternate access to the open space can only be gained by paying a fee ($9.50) to enter the Country Club Gate to Pebble Beach, or parking in the Methodist Church parking lot on Sunset Drive and fording a gulley.
According to the dog walkers, many of whom are older people with constrained walking abilities, these other options are not workable.
