Stupid Art Galleries – Paint A New Sign, Will Ya

While Pacific Grove lays claim to many family-friendly events – the Butterfly Parade, Good Old Days and Feast of Lanterns – when the sun goes down and the grown-ups want to make merry, P.G. is reliably an early-to-bedder.

But on special Friday nights, the tide turns in the town’s favor during the aptly named Wine, Art & Music Walk.

Oh, look! There are FOUR more galleries just up the street, right?

We Knew This Was Coming, Right?

After hanging a banner counting down the days until the May 25th doomsday, they come back from ruin to have an “Emergency Reopening Sale”. Does still having an inventory of unsold overpriced furniture constitute an emergency? Just close the place already.
Lane Furniture 485 Lighthouse Out Of Business Not

I’d say something about buying from a closing store, the hazards of not being able to contact anyone when a table leg falls off your $1,800 coffee table, but these places never really close.

The exact same thing the other constantly “going out of business” furniture store did in February 2008.

Newest Sensation! The Going Out Of Business Sale

Lighthouse Rug Store Oob

Think it’s the truth? Or are they another poser like the Timepiece and Lane Furniture?

Oriental carpet stores are the all time champion of fake “going out of business” sales.

Phony going-out-of-business sales long have plagued Oriental rug retailing here and across the country, dealers say. The industry is susceptible because Oriental rugs can cost thousands of dollars, and many consumers lack the expertise to judge whether a rug’s quality matches its price. That frequently makes the lure of huge markdowns effective, especially when the discount is off a grossly inflated original price.

City Suing Aliottis

Are all Aliottis this dishonest?

The city of Monterey is suing a local couple for allegedly trying to make a big profit on their subsidized affordable housing.

According to the lawsuit, Gaspare and Rose Ann Aliotti lied to the city and rented out the Yerba Buena Court condominium they purchased in 1985 so they could wait out deed restrictions and sell it at market rates.

Gaspare Aliotti referred questions to his wife. Rose Ann Aliotti referred inquiries to her attorney, whom she declined to identify, saying she’d deliver a message. No one responded.

Nader Agha Breaks Promise To Give Up

Just when you thought Nader Agha would take his phony antiques, coins and sell the Holman Building he comes back again with another hotel pitch.

Armed with architects’ drawings of concepts for the property, Agha said he has reconsidered his idea of abandoning the project in the face of overwhelming support expressed to him for the project.

In December, Agha listed the 84-year-old, 120,000-square-foot Holman Building and the 1.35-acre lot it sits on, as well as four other lots on Fountain Avenue being used for parking and a building across the street at 549 Lighthouse Ave., on the real estate market.

At the time he said he was fed up with nearly 14 years of delays in his attempt to build a luxury hotel on the site.

Don’t Anger The Deer

Mad Deer

“The deer are becoming move aggressive with people and dogs,” said Elizabeth Conti-Yeo, P.G. animal control officer.“Because it’s the fawning season, they perceive dogs as a threat or a predator.”

“We suggest people carry a walking stick to fan in front of them to keep the deer back, but not necessarily hit them,” she said.

I’d carry a 30.06, but that would get you tossed in jail.

Calling Anyone Crazy Enough To Be P.G. City Manager

Hmm, they never did call me back…

Pacific Grove’s list of city manager prospects has been whittled down from an unwieldy pool of 112 to just a handful which may include a current city employee.

The new city manager will have to tackle the city’s dire financial problems, making Becklenberg or someone else with a financial background a good choice for the post.
