Claimed to be historic, intimate, charming, blah blah blah. Was a big old house that was cut up into cheap apartments at one time.

Pacific Grove Inn on Pine Avenue shut down two weeks ago and customers who were supposed to stay there say the hotel took their money and still hasn’t reimbursed them.

On Tuesday, a sign was posted on the front door of the inn telling customers to write their name, number and email on the yellow pad on the front porch.

The 16-room hotel was operated by Malibu businessman Gary Peterson, who filed for bankruptcy July 15 in Santa Barbara.

Jan Leasure Says We Can’t Stop STRs

Landlords will do as the please to tear down the hometown.

“When you live in a neighborhood, I understand how it feels if it’s not going in the direction you want it to,” said Jan Leasure, owner of Monterey Bay Vacation Rentals. “But short-term rentals will keep happening.”

But a perusal of any of the short-term rental websites reveals anywhere between 50-200 vacation rentals in Pacific Grove.

Leasure has been in the property management business for more than 30 years and believes that “as long as there is a demand on the Peninsula, people will continue to look for short-term rentals.”

According to Leasure, vacation rentals will continue to prosper in places like Pacific Grove with its small-town feel and proximity to the ocean. “You can’t stop it, because you can’t legislate who buys a house.”

Pacific Grove chose to go with Greenwaste for the same reasons Marina and Carmel chose it, because they need to meet the new state standards that are upping the waste reduction percentage from 50 to 75 percent.

“Their whole expertise was designed to ensure that we, as well as the other cities on the peninsula, can achieve the 75 percent waste reduction targets,” said Frutchey.

Frutchey said while the bid from Greenwaste was more affordable than Waste Management, the price of garbage service will still be going up by about five to six percent

Although it might seem confusing to an outsider, being the queen — or one of her six princesses who make up the Royal Court — is a big deal in America’s Last Hometown.

The Royal Court is selected by a committee of local business people, former Royal Court members and nonprofit board members. Although the festival held a swimsuit contest in the 1930s, middle and high school students in Pacific Grove are now selected for excelling academically and how active they are in community service and after-school activities.

PACIFIC GROVE, Fla. —The annual Feast of Lanterns festival lit up Lover’s Point Park in Pacific Grove Saturday night.

People packed beach as colors filled the sky as 105-year-old Pacific Grove tradition continues.

The event celebrates a Chinese legend called the “Blue Willow,” a story about a princess’ forbidden love. The ceremony at Lover’s Point re-enacts the story, and for the grand finale the lovers flee together and turn into monarch butterflies, cuing the fireworks show out over the Monterey Bay.

Asilomar Conference Grounds will serve as their headquarters with any overflow going to other nearby Pacific Grove hotels. They will be using local transportation, tour, whale-watching and kayaking companies while in the area, said the chamber president.
The networks will be anchoring coverage at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research vessels.

Ilagene “Jeanie” Quaglia is accused of stealing from a 82-year-old Pacific Grove man who she cared for and managed his rental properties.

It was a neighbor and close friend who noticed money missing and alerted police earlier this year.

“A reverse mortgage, lots and lots of checks that were written out to herself by her with George’s name forged on them, and a bunch of rental money never deposited,” Kristin Houde said.

After a six month investigation, prosecutors charged Quaglia with three felony counts of elder theft, forgery, and identity theft. The neighbor believes the 61-year-old woman may have stolen more than $100,000.

“It did make me wonder from day one, how does somebody who’s a clerk at CVS, drive a BMW SUV that’s probably worth 70 grand?” Houde said.

After a six month investigation, prosecutors charged Quaglia with three felony counts of elder theft, forgery, and identity theft. The neighbor believes the 61-year-old woman may have stolen more than $100,000.

Quaglia is on probation after pleading guilty to animal cruelty charges two years ago. Humane officers found 48 dogs and cats living in filth inside her Monterey home. When they arrested her at work, she had a cat locked in the trunk of her car. The Monterey house was condemned.

$50 Per Month Sewer Bills Proposed

The city’s aging sewer system has led to repeat sewage spills into protected coastal waters. Officials sought the fee hike to cover the long-term costs of repairing it, pinned at $13.9 million over 10 years.
“Portions of the sewer system are almost 100 years old,” P.G. City Manager Tom Frutchey writes by email. “In order to keep the system functioning effectively, for the safety of residents and the protection of the Bay, the council adopted the proposed rates. Throughout the 10-year period, future councils will be able to make further adjustments.”
Meanwhile, the Monterey Peninsula Taxpayers Association has pressured the city to refund a $600,000-plus sewer fee overcharge to residents. Officials have said they’d rather apply it as a credit against the upcoming fee hike.

New rates will help cover the cost of fixing old pipelines that date back to the early 1900s. Pacific Grove residents will now see a 5 percent rate increase on their monthly sewer bill, totaling about $42 a month, and some residents in the area aren’t too happy.

The city said the sewage rate increase will bring in more than $800,000 over the next couple of years. City officials said the sewer fund is separate from the general fund and can only be used for sewer maintenance.
