While there had been lofty sales tax revenue predictions for a pot shop opening in the city, the estimate has plummeted significantly.
An argument in support of a 2022 ballot measure that was signed by Councilman Chaps Poduri and then-council candidate Tina Rau, who has since been elected, told voters that one weed dispensary could bring $300,000 to the city.
But in a public report to councilmembers in late June, Mogensen said that the estimated annual revenue for a dispensary is ‘ ‘up to $50,000; actual amount of annual revenue may be more or less than this estimate.

On Wednesday, the PG. City Council gave the owners of Hops & Fog at 511 Lighthouse Ave. the green light to build a so-called bulb-out — essentially an extension of the sidewalk to accommodate outdoor dining. The council voted 6-0 to issue an encroachment permit to the restaurant. The reconfiguration, according to a rendering provided to the city, would eliminate one parking space in front of the restaurant. All construction costs and permit fees will be paid for by Hops & Fog.

Authorities had released a wanted flyer with his photo and offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to his arrest in connection to a decapitated sea lion found near Monterey.

As of Tuesday night, the man at the center of the case, Jason Bietz, reached out to FOX26 hoping to clear his name and get the truth out.

Bietz says he and his daughter were visiting Point Pinos Beach in Pacific Grove when they noticed a dead sea lion on the sand.

As they looked at the animal, he says a woman approached them and accused them of stabbing and decapitating it.

He says they were simply looking at the animal, but things got heated with the woman, so they left.

A woman walking along Point Pinos Beach in Pacific Grove reported witnessing a man and his daughter mutilating the carcass of a dead seal back in June to KSBW 8.

Several months later, NOAA got involved and announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the man wanted for doing this.

The incident occurred at 8:40 p.m. on July 27. NOAA says the sea lion was dead before being decapitated, and its cause of death was not determined.

“We are seeking information on the person who decapitated the animal and any other details surrounding the incident,” said NOAA.

AN EARLY-MORNING blaze at a brewpub in Pacific Grove late last week caused property damage but did not injure anyone, officials said this week.
On Sept. 19 at about 2:20 a.m., Monterey Fire Department responded to an incident at Hops & Fog Brewing Co. at 511 Lighthouse Ave. The building has a residential apartment upstairs from the restaurant. An employee called 911 to report the fire.

Taxes on retail pot, but no revenue from homegrown? Do we have revenuer cops and homegrown permits on the horizon?

Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Monday to roll back cannabis excise taxes. The bill, AB 564, undoes a hike from this summer when rates jumped from 15% to 19%. Starting October 1, the excise tax will drop back down to 15% and remain there through 2028.

Critics warn that lowering the tax could shrink funding for programs like childcare, education, and community reinvestment.

Andrew Castro, a cannabis consumer, expressed concern, saying, “I’m just kind of a weary, you know, that it’s going to tip over on the other end. In other areas for sure.”

For cannabis shops and growers, the tax cut means survival. Many argue that the state’s high taxes push customers to the illicit market, where products aren’t tested or regulated.

“A search of the vehicle revealed the presence of controlled substances and drug paraphernalia,” according to the Sheriff’s Office. “During the search, deputies discovered a loaded 1911 A-1 pistol. The pistol was found within hands reach of where the passenger was seated and inches from where deputies had been standing during the contact.”

A further search resulted in the discovery of a loaded AR pistol carbine and a Japanese Type 11 light machine gun, according to deputies. They also said that two of the weapons did not have serial numbers.

Deputies continued to investigate and found that 42-year-old Brian Richard Knabb is a convicted felon from Pacific Grove, and was attempting to sell the light machine gun.

The council voted to direct city staffers to begin working with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County to
increase funding in preconstruction costs by $137,961 for the so-called Cedar, Sunset and Congress Intersection Project. The extra funds will be used to continue preparing a design engineering evaluation report for the roundabout and improvements to nearby streets.
The council also decided to discuss at a future meeting a request by the consultant GHD for an additional $340,000.

Paul Nkoy Lumbi Jr., 60, was arrested Aug. 12 and charged with felony forcible rape, lewd acts on a dependent adult and other charges that police say stem from his former employment at Forest Hill Manor in Pacific Grove.

All three alleged victims were 82 years old. Lumbi has pleaded not guilty to the crimes, and he’s being held in Monterey County Jail on $2.7 million bail.
A court document filed last week by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who is prosecuting Lumbi, indicates that beginning in 2005, Lumbi faced six complaints by patients at nursing homes in Monterey and Salinas.

On Aug. 27 at about 9:45 a.m., Pacific Grove Police officers responded to a vehicle collision near Forest and Bishop ave-nues off Highway 68. As officers inventoried items in the car — since it had major damage and had to be towed — they found prescription medication without a prescription.
After taking Castroville resident Nolberto Alaniz, 25, into custody, the cops discovered he was also in possession of suspected methamphetamine, cocaine or fentanyl and psilocybin.
