Fireworks Come Early

For those who love the smell of red phosphorus in the morning.

Pacific Grove Police said that the live red phosphorus U.S. military marine locater flare was found near Asilomar near and the 1400 block of Sunset Drive. After securing the area, the police notified the Monterey County Bomb Squad, who in turn contacted the Department of Defense Bomb Squad at Travis.

The bomb squad used explosives to blow up the device, which is used for military search and rescue operations and
drills.

Illegal Hotels In Homes Owners Sue City

Most of these “short term rental” businesses are owned by out of town companies or people that don’t live in P.G. They fought against the pigs and chickens already, now they fight to turn neighborhoods into motels.

Pacific Grove’s rules, the suit says, “unlawfully violate, deny and impair the fundamental vested rights of the petitioners and others lawfully using their properties for short-term occupancy and rentals.”

The lawsuit also names rental owners Joy Colangelo, Kevin Delaney, William B. Harder, Alka Joshi, Kathryn Kranen and Spencer Tall as plaintiffs. Palo Alto attorney David P. Lanferman filed the complaint on their behalf.

School Prepares Kids For Jail

Schools looking more like prisons all the time.

Pacific Grove Unified School District has proposed erecting a 6-foot high fence around the perimeter of the school with gates that would be locked while classes are in session.

In March, police ramped up security at all Pacific Grove schools for several days after someone wrote a threat in the P.G. High’s girls’ bathroom alluding to a school shooting. Pacific Grove police have not yet arrested the person responsible for the threat.

So the threats appear to come from students. Imagine the trampling that would occur if an assailant carries out a threat, with all students locked in behind a gate?

“Big Little Lies” Takes Over Beaches and Parks

In exchange for just $60,000. P.G. hired a consultant to do math.

On Wednesday night, the Pacific Grove City Council voted in favor of negotiating an agreement with Blue Blues Productions to use city parks and streets for the show — which stars Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep and Shailene Woodley. Filming begins later this month at Lovers Point, according to the city.

Short Term Rental Initiative Goes To City

Council members will decide between adopting the ordinance without alteration or immediately ordering an election, at which time the ordinance would be submitted to a vote by city voters during the November 2018 election. Their third option would be to direct city staff to prepare an analysis of the initiative’s business and fiscal impact.

“If I was going to think consistency and go with how city has acted in past, I suspect the council will lean toward putting it on the ballot,” he added.

While the item’s agenda report estimated getting the initiative on the ballot would cost from $58,206 to $77,608, Coletti said the city is confusing the total cost for an election with the cost of adding a single item to an existing ballot and that it would actually be much less.

“As an example, it only cost the city $8,500 to add Measure P (the unsuccessful admissions tax) to the November, 2016 ballot,” said Coletti.

New Eateries

Two with sidewalk cages that were bakeries long ago. One was the Fighting Favaloros which closed again for reasons unknown. Perhaps more of that family time they talk about. Other was Mauricios. Last one is the first ‘pub’ allowed in P.G. Grab a fork and go.

Among three new restaurant establishments opening on downtown’s main thoroughfare in mid-April is The Monarch Pub & Restaurant, the first pub ever in the state’s last dry town. The new establishment, which will be located at 617 Lighthouse Ave. where the 17th Street Grille used to reside, will join fine dining restaurants Wild Fish and Poppy Hall. The former, which will feature locally-caught fish and seafood and farm-to-table cuisine will be located at 545 Lighthouse Ave., the old location of Favaloro’s Big Night Bistro while the latter will take the spot where longtime eatery Mauricio’s was at 589 Lighthouse Ave.

Price spotting – Monarch pub looks best if one is real hungry.

  • $10 for some mixed veggies at Poppy Hall
  • $9.95 for a turkey burger at Monarch
  • $32 for Bouillabaisse at Wild Fish

P.G. Pays $25,000 To Oakland Survey Company Only To Find The Obvious

Tax the tourists. Oh, and 41 percent come up negative on short term cyber rentals.

The survey also showed that 41 percent of the 375 likely voters surveyed on the phone and online believe that the city has done a “poor” job of managing the city’s vacation rentals, while 28 percent gave the same grade for the way the city manages its pension obligations. Similarly, 22 percent said P.G. is doing poorly managing its finances.

High Tech Meter Maid Marking Misses The Boat

I bet someone at Victorian Corner is responsible, they seem to have a lock on all day parking. Or the number one objective of AutoChalk is collecting all the locations and license plates of every car.

Victorian Corner Parking

The issue, administrative manager Jocelyn Francis said, is that the system isn’t properly alerting parking enforcement officers when a vehicle has been in a timed space too long and is in violation — which is the purpose of the parking technology.

While Francis said that the city is working with the company to improve the accuracy of the equipment, it’s decided to withhold a final payment of $11,800 for the machines until the system “consistently meets our standards.” The system was supposed to replace the chalk method, but P.G. parking officers are still marking tires.

Gerald Leigh Properties Wants To Cancel Mega Building

Quickly backs out over a complaint. Are they using that complaint to reduce the mass of building by removing those pesky affordable apartments?

Reds Station

Gerald Leigh Properties had proposed tearing down the decrepit 3,472-square-foot building at 522 Lighthouse Ave. and building a four-story, 43,912-square-foot structure with 14 market-rate townhomes, workforce townhomes, retail shops, a restaurant and an underground parking garage with 32 spaces.

“Our suspicions are that the applicant is going to go back to his original proposal” which does not contain any affordable townhomes, Brodeur said.

Dog Stabbed At Dog Park

Head In Barking

“A man was walking his dog and another person came up in her vehicle, opened up the door of her vehicle and before she could grab the leash, the dog ran out and attacked the other dog. The gentleman tried to get the dog off his dog, was unsuccessful tried to pry the mouth of the dog off his dog and ended up biting him as well.” That’s when the man pulled out his knife, stabbing and killing the pitbull.
