The one-story wood-frame building, bracketed by two stone chimneys at 263 Grove Acre Ave., is in an advanced state of dilapidation and unsafe, said John Kuehl, city building official.

Kuehl ordered it fenced off immediately and taken down by Friday.

After his emergency order was reviewed April 13 by the city’s Historic Resources Committee, Kuehl said he was willing to delay the order past May 4 until measures could be taken to salvage parts of the building and draw plans for future reconstruction should money become available.

If the parents think it’s not safe, drop them off somewhere else – they are not forced to use the front of the school, though it might be horrifying for them to not have their little snowflakes out of their sight.

Judy Smith’s children attend Pacific Grove Middle School, and she says Forest Avenue is simply too narrow, and busy for drop-off zones. Standing outside of the school, looking at a parade of cars drive by, Smith says, “This just makes no sense having it here on a busy street like this.”

The Center for Investigative Action wanted to know just how dangerous Forrest Avenue is, so we looked at the accident rates for the past ten years. Out of the 440 accidents on the roadway, only five were in front of the school. Pacific Grove Police Chief Darius Engles says, “The road is really no less safe than any of the roads in Pacific Grove.”

Deborah King, 54, was convicted in February of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the death of Joel Woods on Sept. 2, 2008. King’s mandated sentence was enhanced because of five prior convictions for driving under the influence. She will not be eligible for parole until 2023.

Woods’ father, Ken, also asked the court to impose the toughest possible sentence, and recounted what he said he believed were King’s repeated attempts to dodge taking responsibility for his son’s death, including attempts to fake mental incompetence.

The UC Davis veterinary hospital treated Harry, who went back to the facility Wednesday for a checkup. Enns said Harry looks “pretty normal” but that he’s missing
some of his front teeth. She said she is going to look into the possibility of having Harry fitted with dental implants. Meanwhile, Heidi, who was in quarantine
at the SPCA after the attack, was scheduled to be put down Thursday.

Police booked Jay Ballard, 39, into Monterey County Jail on $66,000 bail for felony second degree robbery and making terrorist threats, and misdemeanor spousal battery, willful cruelty to a child and probation violation.

“It was a drunken rampage,” Miller said. Records indicate Ballard has an extensive history with Monterey County Superior Court, including felony, misdemeanor, traffic and family law cases.

Assistant City Manager Jim Becklenberg said the city will end the fiscal year on June 30 in the black, with money left over to bring its reserve fund to $2.7 million.

But, he said, Pacific Grove has accumulated a $10 million backlog in deferred maintenance and equipment replacement. Residents at recent workshops have identified a number of priorities they would like to see funded, including street maintenance, storm drain repair and sidewalk construction, and more library hours.

Assuming no new taxes, he said, additional money-saving measures and aggressively pursuing service fees to recover costs, possibly contracting with private companies for some city functions and sharing services with other communities and agencies, might reduce that deficit to about $632,000 in fiscal 2015-16.

Jean Byrne says any kind of revenue generating parking will drive away spenders. Don’t forget the merchants that take up spaces on Lighthouse all day – Victorian Corner, Hazaras and the like.

Mr. Becklenberg said there are a number of options on parking revenue as the staff looks broadly at parking in Pacific Grove. He said they would be meeting with the business community and merchants in the near future.

chairman Tom McMahon said the difficult issue before the committee was to figure out how best to construct a survey of the business community and solicit their thoughts concerning paid parking.

Diver Rescued From Bay Dies

A San Jose scuba diver who was brought ashore unconscious and not breathing Sunday off Pacific Grove has become the Peninsula’s third diving-related fatality this month.

Kristina Gomez-Weese, 43, died late Monday at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.

Gomez-Weese was found by her two diving partners in 70 feet of water between Lovers Point and Point Pinos about 11 a.m. Sunday, said Coast Guard Lt. John Suckow.
