KMBY 1240 Original Studios – Virtually Unchanged

In a recent rare visit to Cannery Row I noticed that there are very few landmarks left. The cannery buildings are all but gone and replaced with replicas. What those that are still there have changed drastically to accommodate imprisoned fish, tourists and more commerce. Gone forever are original bohemian places like Odyssey Records, Kalisa’s, Capone’s Warehouse and The 812 Cinema. One thing that has not really physically changed in over 35 years is the radio station offices, studio and transmitter that broadcasts at 1240 AM. Once Monterey’s only top 40 pop station KMBY, it’s now a talk radio format known as KNRY. Back in the 1970s, friends and I would often visit the studio, whether to collect prizes won in the many call in contests, or just see the DJ working at the turntables. Here’s a photo collection of the studio as it is today.

Fire Breaks Out In New Monterey Business

Flames were spotted in Om Oasis yoga studio, on the first floor of the Perez Building on the 400 block of Lighthouse Avenue, shortly after 2:30 p.m. from across the street by passerby Goksal Dilsiz.

Firetrucks arrived within five minutes, and the fire was out five minutes later, said Paul Goodwin, operation division chief for the Monterey Fire Department.

Unlike the recent fire that destroyed a building on Alvrado street, the Perez building had sprinklers.

Kalisa’s Closes. One More Landmark Lost

Nearly 50 years after she crossed the tracks and took over the site of what was once a bordello immortalized in John Steinbeck’s writing, the Queen of Cannery Row’s reign ends this week.

Kalisa Moore, 81, longtime owner of Kalisa’s, will close her doors Tuesday. The La Ida Cafe building where she’s fed and entertained guests since 1958, has been sold to local restaurateur Chris Shake, who plans to open a new cafe this spring.

Over five decades, as Cannery Row changed from an industrial area to a tourist mecca, Moore fed actors and writers, people down on their luck and others high on life at the two-story cafe and cabaret.

When The Weather Is Fine PG&E Goes Offline

For the second time in a weekend, parts of Monterey and Pacific Grove were plunged into darkness Sunday night.

“It just happened to have affected a lot of the same people,” a PG&E spokeswoman said.

The latest outage was caused by fallen wires at David Avenue and Fillmore Street at the Monterey-Pacific Grove border, and was apparently unrelated to a power loss Saturday.

At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, more than 4,000 Monterey residents and most businesses on Cannery Row were again left without power after a similar outage the night before.

When Saturday’s outage first occurred, there was some speculation that a car that had struck a power pole on Asilomar Avenue might have been the cause, the PG&E spokeswoman said, but that scenario was quickly ruled out.

Repair crews determined, she said, that a below-ground equipment failure caused a transformer to explode near Fremont Street and Ramona Avenue in Monterey.

Traffic Solutions Sought

Lighthouse Ave Traffic

The third project — and likely to be the most contentious — will tackle traffic problems on Lighthouse Avenue, a burgeoning business district where many shopkeepers want more convenient parking and clean, attractive sidewalks.

Deal said the city has explored three options for this stretch of Lighthouse Avenue: do nothing; reinstate left-hand turns and make parallel Hawthorne Avenue a one-way street eastbound; or make Lighthouse a one-way street eastbound with a bus-only lane.

The latter two projects would cost from $2.5 million to $5 million.

The best thing that happend was when Foam Street went one way. Face it, residents of Hawthorne – that’s the best thing to do there too.

Then take out half of the curbside parking, reduce some sidewalks and buy up vacant lots and vacant properties for parking off street. Look at Pacific Garden Mall in Santa Cruz as a model.
