What Recession? Fish Jail Reels ‘Em In

Mister Jaws

It wasn’t expected, but Monterey Bay Aquarium is on pace to match last year’s attendance.
And considering what a big impact the aquarium makes on the local economy, that’s good news for Monterey County as well.

“It’s flat out been a good year,” said Ken Peterson, the aquarium’s communications director.

The aquarium had projected a drop of nearly 250,000 from last year’s 1.9million attendance, Peterson said, based mainly on the weak economy.

Wither Oh Willys Smokehouse

Willys Smokehouse

This excellent establishment that served us carnivores well is no longer with us. Sorry to see it shut, it was one of the few reasons that drew me to the ‘Row. Especially pleasurable was seeing Midwest rubes be seated, look at the menu and then head for the door. My kind of place.

At least we still have had Henry’s BBQ. Very recommended, I mean a combo platter with FOUR different meats comes in at $18. That’s $3 less than a plate a noodles at Joe Rombi!

Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Garrison was working on the boat dock when he noticed and heard commotion on San Carlos Beach. A pedestrian notified Garrison of the situation, and called emergency medical services.

Garrison grabbed a first-aid kit from the station’s 47-foot Motor Lifeboat and ran to the beach.

Once on scene, Garrison found a 39-year-old female scuba diver unconscious on the beach. The diver had been pulled out of the water by fellow divers who had already commenced CPR. Garrison assumed CPR efforts and within a minute, the patient regained consciousness.

Cannery Row History Signs Ripped Off

Just like poachers after abalone, them signs pry right off.

“We don’t know,” Adams said about the thieves “if they are collectors or malicious vandals.”

The Business Improvement District, in partnership with the city, the Cannery Row Business Association, Monterey Bay Aquarium and InterContinental The Clement Monterey hotel, has put up informational plaques, murals and ceramic recreations of the row’s cannery labels of fish that were important to Monterey Bay’s seafood industry. A series of banners depicts historic row figures and selected quotes from Steinbeck’s works.

The Clement hotel built a walkway that gives pedestrians free access to the ocean side of the hotel and the rear of the Pacific Biological Laboratory, where Ed Ricketts plied his trade as a collector of marine specimens. Tiles showing each of the canneries’ labels have been placed in sidewalks where the canneries once operated.
