Failed IMAX Theater’s Next Venture, A Fly & Dive

Like that’s going to be a real Monterey Experience. More than black light mini golf, more than a diving bell, it’s a Fly & Dive. Check back in a few, see if it’s still a thing. Hint: Bring back the Edgewater Packing Company.

Work has resumed on a new attraction inside the long-shuttered movie theater on Cannery Row, nearly three years after its permits were approved by the Monterey Planning Commission.

A sign posted on the door of the building at 640 Wave St. notifies passersby that work has commenced at the property, which is owned by the Cannery Row Company. The lessee is listed as Fly Dive, LLC, doing business as Monterey Fly & Dive.

Vote was 183 yes and 138 no. Well, what did they get? Besides pizza.

“Monterey Bay Aquarium looks forward to negotiating in good faith with MBAWU on behalf of its members. At this time, the Aquarium cannot speculate on what may or may not be included in the union contract. The Aquarium has always prioritized-and will continue to prioritize-the well-being of our staff, who play a central role in maintaining our position as a global leader in marine conservation and education.”

The Monterey Fire Department responded to reports of a commercial structure fire at 902 Lighthouse Ave. around 6:37 a.m. according to a press release from the City of Monterey. Fire crews arrived within five minutes to find smoke inside the fast-food restaurant, located at the corner of Lighthouse and David Avenues, a few blocks up from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Firefighters found flames spreading rapidly through the attic. As the fire intensified, crews switched to a defensive strategy and evacuated the structure due to concerns about a potential roof collapse.

The fire was eventually contained, but the damage was extensive. The roof and several walls collapsed, and officials have deemed the building a complete loss. A Monterey Fire engine and ladder truck will remain on-site to monitor for flare-ups.

Of course management is going to reject laying down for a labor union. Secret ballot is the best way.

About a month after union organizers sent a request for voluntary recognition of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Workers United (MBAWU) union, which would represent all non-management staff at the Aquarium, the request was denied by Aquarium management. Executive Director Julie Packard, who recently announced her retirement, sent a message to Aquarium employees stating: “We want to be sure we honor each of your voices… That’s why holding a secret ballot election is the best path forward.”

“Really what they’re doing is forcing workers to vote twice,” Anderson says. “I think a lot of our leaders were disappointed in management’s decision because the Monterey Bay Aquarium is such a stalwart supporter of ocean conservation and a leader on a lot of progressive fronts. We figured that they would also do the right thing and stand by their workers.”

Monterey’s first cannabis dispensary, Off the Charts, is launching with a soft opening on Saturday, January 25.

The cannabis dispensary is using the soft opening as a dry run for when the grand opening occurs in a couple of weeks. Off the Charts stated this is to build local support before being officially open to the public.

Disabled Aquarium Visitor Cannot Use Restroom, Can Sue

Hard to believe in this day and age, but even with help from a fish prison guard could not access the facilities.

Gloria Jean Kish, from Alameda, said she and her sister were visiting the aquarium’s living kelp forest and jellyfish exhibits on July 24, 2024, when she said she encountered “significant challenges” in finding a bathroom that could accommodate disabled people.
“The ADA-accessible restroom they found in the middle of the facility was too narrow for Kish’s wheelchair and prevented her from entering,” according to the complaint filed Jan. 9 in Monterey County Superior Court. “Despite attempting to access three different restrooms, none were suitable for wheelchair use.”
She also suggested that the restroom incident contributed to medical issues, including a urinary tract infection and a permanent catheter, and that she’s been in “bed most of the time since the accident.’
She alleges violation of state laws that are intended to protect disabled people and is asking a judge to order the aquarium to comply with standards required in the Americans with Disabilities Act. She is seeking an  unspecified amount in monetary damages exceeding $35,000.

P.G. Style Remodel On Cannery Row Questioned

One person’s “repair and maintenance” is another’s teardown and replace.

Since 2018, a developer has been seeking permission to renovate a rundown concrete building at 300 Cannery Row to build eight condominiums and retail and commercial space. While the City of Monterey approved a permit for the project, staffers at the California Coastal Commission recommended that the 12-member commission deny applicant The 300 LLC a development permit.

Drunk Man Taken Down

This Abbruzzetti’s only record was some traffic tickets. What set the dude off? Getting less lethal rounds shot close to the privates was the solution.

On Oct. 15 shortly before 9 p.m., MPD responded to a David Avenue residence on a report of a drunk man, identified as 24-year-old Giuseppi Abbruzzetti, “breaking items inside and acting erratically,” Lt. Ethan Andrews said. A trained crisis negotiator was also on scene, but Abbruzzetti refused to talk.
He then crawled out a bedroom window holding a sheathed sword and began walking on David Avenue, Andrews said, and when officers ordered him to drop the sword, he refused. “One officer deployed pepper spray at Abbruzzetti’s face, while another officer deployed five 40mm sponge  rounds that struck his hip and hand,” he said. “Abbruzzetti then dropped the sword, and he was taken to the ground by officers and arrested.”
