Alatini Saulala, 37, is charged with with three counts of financial elder abuse and two counts of grand theft, all felonies.
“He goes door to door saying, ‘I see your trees are overgrown, do you need them trimmed?’” said Monterey County Deputy District Attorney Lisa Poll. “He was not a licensed contractor at the time.”
Saulala, who faces up to four years in prison if convicted, is accused of fleecing four residents, ranging in age from 77 to 94, who have dementia, Alzheimer’s and failing memory.
The most serious allegation involves a 77-year-old woman from Carmel Valley who paid Saulala $50,000 during a six-month period for tree work that Poll said should have cost about $5,000.

David Bindel Owes $30,000 Back Rent On Old Bath House

The owner of The Old Bath House Restaurant in Pacific Grove, which closed Nov. 5, owes the city $30,000 in back rent, according to Pacific Grove’s city manager.
David Bindel, who ran the restaurant in the city-owned, oceanfront building overlooking Lovers Point, was being charged $5,000 a month.
“He hasn’t paid us since May,” said Pacific Grove City Manager Jim Colangelo. “The lease expired in the spring, and we’ve been on a month-to-month with him. We don’t know why he hasn’t paid.”
Bindel said he slacked on paying rent because he was frustrated with the city since it wouldn’t help pay for the necessary upgrades to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
Bindel has since moved on to real estate management.
P.G. Beaches Attracting Salinas Gangs
Whether to avoid the cops who know they’re violating probation or to hang out without fear of attack by rivals, gang members from other Monterey County cities are being spotted more and more in Pacific Grove and Carmel.
“This is not an area where they need to constantly watch their backs. They’ll drink alcohol and go to the beach with their girlfriends,” said PGPD Lt. Tom Uretsky. “They come to P.G. because in many cases it’s considered neutral territory by the Salinas gangs.”
And police say locals should beware: A volatile situation can easily ignite if warring gang members find themselves on the same stretch of sand.
I do not shop at stores that support gangs. If there is gang graffiti on the walls, I stay away. If the workers look anything like a gang member or even imitate the look and behavior I stay away. Hear that Northridge Mall? Safeway? ATC?
Mountain Lion Or Housecat?

“There have been five sightings in the past week,” reported Paul Jeung, who works as a starter for the golf course.
Jeung said the mountain lion was seen on the back nine, which wraps around the lighthouse, and was described as “pretty small, about 100 pounds.”Several of the sightings have been discounted by P.G. police officers. One “lion” turned out to be a large house cat and another, reported on Jewell Avenue near Sunset Drive, was described as “two feet long,” too small to be anything but a new cub.
Thief Leaves Cell Phone At Crime Scene, Comes Back To Get Arrested
None-too-bright Pacific Grove criminals.

A suspected car burglar was arrested in Pebble Beach last week after he left his cell phone behind and then arranged a meeting with the victim to get it back.
Pacific Grove resident Sean Connors, 18, pleaded not guilty in Monterey County Superior Court Thursday to felony charges of vehicle burglary, grand theft and possession of stolen property – though he apparently didn’t possess it for long.
A caddie at Cypress Point Club, called the sheriff’s office just before 11 a.m. May 19 after discovering his Toyota Tundra had been burglarized.
He found a cell phone inside that did not belong to him, said Sgt. John DiCarlo. The phone rang, so the victim answered it, and the suspect said, “I left my cell phone in the car, and I’ll give you your property back if you give me my cell phone back.”
Nottenkamper agreed, hung up, and then promptly called the sheriff to report his truck had been broken into, his wallet, including $185 cash and day planner stolen, and the suspect was on his way back to the scene of the crime.
Deputy John Pellerin arrived at the caddie parking lot off 17 Mile Drive 10 minutes later.<
When the deputy arrived, the suspect was there with the victim and he was arrested, DiCarlo said. Nottenkamper recovered his planner and wallet, complete with cash and credit cards.

Raccoons Bad For More Than Just Tipped Trash Cans
Children getting perminantly crippled by parasites in raccoon poop.
The experts warn parents to watch their children carefully when playing in areas with known populations of raccoon latrines.
“If children are seen to ingest material from a raccoon latrine, the drug albendazole should be administered immediately,” Murray said, “and a sample should be sent for expert examination for Baylisascaris procyonis eggs.” Everyone should thoroughly wash their hands after playing outdoors or working in the yard.
Murray’s best advice for people with persistent raccoons at their home is to discourage the animals by eliminating access where possible, never leaving food out, and removing feces promptly. “The eggs are not infective until they ‘age’ for 14 to 28 days, so if the droppings are cleaned up immediately there is no danger,” Murray said.
Moe Ammar Hates The Tree
Even at night, it’s ugly

Business leaders are dreaming of a green Christmas in Pacific Grove — but it’s a vision with a price tag.
For years, Chamber of Commerce Director Moe Ammar has heard complaints about the scraggly pine in Jewell Park that the town decorates every holiday season.
“That’s got to be the ugliest tree I’ve ever seen,” said Ammar. “Last year we had 17 or 18 people comment, saying, `What kind of a horrible tree is this?’.

And therefore, welcome in P.G.to draw tourist $$.

Public Works superintendent Daniel Gho recommended councilmembers consider bringing The Legends of the Autobahn to the municipal golf links on Aug. 18, 2022. Gho said it would be a “full cost recovery special event,” meaning organizers would reimburse Pacific Grove for related costs.
The car show’s organizers are looking for a new venue at the same time Pacific Grove would like to replace the loss of a car auction that was held during Car Week on the 18th Hole of the city’s golf course. Worldwide Auctioneers informed P.G. it would not be returning to the city next year for the event, Gho said.
