Fire Breaks Out At Plaza Hotel On Cannery Row

Fire damage minimal, but several floors below got everything soaked by the sprinkler systems.

With the Cannery Row hotel filled to capacity, the Cherry’s Jubilee car show in full swing for the weekend, and a beer fest under way on the hotel’s lower terrace, a fire started in the penthouse of the westernmost building of the hotel complex about 3:21 p.m., and forced the evacuation.

According to Monterey Fire Capt. Barry Perkins, who arrived first on the scene, the fire started in a flue in the mechanical room on the five-story building’s penthouse level.

Maybe is was better when Round Up was used near the shore.

Microcystin, which is commonly referred to as blue-green algae, can cause liver damage when ingested. All 21 sea otters that tested positive for the bacteria died from liver failure, according to the study, which was completed with the help of experts from UC Santa Cruz and a variety of state and federal agencies.

It is believed the toxins flowed to the ocean off the coast of Monterey in rivers and creeks. Sea urchins and shellfish near the outflow filtered the water and the poison accumulated in their bodies, which were, in turn, eaten by otters.

Enjoy the polluted ocean, Pacific Grove triathletes. Recent rain has washed more raccoon poop into the ocean. Please wash your hands before touching anything in town.

Cal Triathlon in Berkeley, sponsor of the event, noted that a swim clinic at Lovers Point was held Thursday and that the most recent water tests showed safe levels of bacteria.

Triathlon planners have said they intend to go ahead with events as planned. Planners told participants that they must make their own decision about swimming in the bay and that Cal Triathlon would not refund entry fees to those who choose not to swim in the event.

Presidio Training Exercise – This Is Only A Drill

The Presidio of Monterey, in partnership with the City of Monterey, will conduct an active training exercise on Tuesday, September 7th. The exercise is designed to test the ability of each organization to identify and respond to various situations.

A helicopter ambulance is scheduled to land on Presidio’s Soldier Field as part of a mass casualty training segment. Periodic gate delays can be expected, but they should not exceed five minutes.

Woman Injured In P.G. House Fire

An elderly woman is still recovering in the hospital after a late night house fire in Pacific Grove. The fire started around 10 p.m. Friday night in a duplex on Lighthouse Avenue.

Fire officials are calling the home a total loss and now four people are left without a home.

“She suffered some burns to her mouth and her hands as a result of her trying to extinguish the fire.”

The woman was inside her living room. She was lying on the couch and she had a heating pad on her arm. Fire officials are now trying to determine if that’s the cause of the fire.
