Every Election A New Tax

$90.00 a year for 10 years. My vote is a no. Cutback on necessary things during tough times first. I don’t see them trying anything but reducing hours.

To supporters, the library parcel tax Pacific Grove residents will vote on Nov. 2, Measure Q, is the one chance the city has to guarantee funding to keep its century-old library open.

To opponents, Measure Q is an unnecessary add-on to the tax burden based on assumptions of facts that have not been discussed in public.

The ballot measure was debated Tuesday in a forum organized by the League of Women Voters. Linnett Harlan and Greta Miller of the Campaign Committee for Yes on PG Library faced former Councilwoman Susan Goldbeck and Jeffrey Flather of the Monterey Peninsula Taxpayers Association.

Pebble Beach Art Theft Updates

Checking in on the Pebble Beach Art Theft story. This thing is all over the map it seems. Gay bashing, friend’s fathers who pilot helicopters, what next?

KSBW has the complaint file in a .pdf

Dr. Ralph Kennaugh and Angelo Amadio reported the theft of millions of dollars of artwork on Sept. 25, 2009, saying the missing collection contained works by Jackson Pollock, Van Gogh, Miro and Rembrandt.

No arrests were ever made, none of the missing art turned up, and the Sheriff’s Office subsequently talked about charging the two men with filing a false police report or insurance fraud.

The reported theft drew widespread publicity after Kennaugh and Amadio offered a $1million reward for the return of the artwork. But the Sheriff’s Office, within a few days, was painting a different picture of the case, suggesting that something was not right about the big art heist.

Got An Itch?

Creepy.

An invasive snail recently discovered in San Francisco Bay has brought along its own unwelcome stowaway: a parasitic worm responsible for only the second known outbreak of “swimmer’s itch” along the Pacific Coast of the United States.

Swimmer’s itch, or cercarial dermatitis, normally crops up in freshwater. It is an immune system reaction caused when a certain type of parasite emerges from snail shells and attempts to burrow into a host’s skin. Usually, the parasite – a microscopic flatworm with a forked tail – bores into the legs and feet of birds, hitches a ride in the bloodstream and settles in the intestines to breed.

Monterey Aims To Make Recreation Trail Safer

By restricting car traffic. What about the assaults and robberies that always happen on the trail at night? Watch out for cars in the daytime yes, but don’t go there at night.

Bicyclists, runners, walkers and skaters traversing the Monterey Recreation Trail along the waterfront run a gantlet of cross traffic that threatens accidents.

Hopefully that will change as the city of Monterey refines its traffic, waterfront and downtown plans, said city traffic engineer Rich Deal.

“I would love to get comments on any of the trail aspects and the waterfront area,” Deal said, adding that the citywide transportation study is aimed at making the downtown area more accessible and friendly to bicycle traffic.

“I want it to be really safe and fun,” he said. “A good chunk of the visitors we have love to ride bikes and walk along the rec trail.” Drawing some traffic downtown, Deal said, would result in “an increase in activity without having to find places to park cars.”.

Cops File Charges Against Council

The Pacific Grove Police Officers Association filed a charge with the state Public Employment Relations Board in Sacramento that the Pacific Grove City Council violated state labor laws by enacting an ordinance that would limit the city’s contribution to retirement benefits.

The measure, initially proposed by residents for the Nov. 2 ballot, caps city contributions to employee pension benefits at 10 percent of workers’ salaries. Employees could pay additional amounts toward their retirement out of their own pocket.

Host Of Underage Drinking Party Gets Community Service

That sends the wrong perception . There is no real punishment for letting children get drunk, or who you know can get the charges reduced.

The owner of a sport utility vehicle involved in a crash in February that injured four teenagers in Monterey’s Skyline Forest pleaded no contest to one count of violating a Pacific Grove city ordinance against hosting parties where minors are served alcohol.

Christopher Ray Veloz, 19, entered the misdemeanor plea Tuesday before Judge Efren Iglesia.

Veloz was the owner of a Toyota 4Runner taken from his home, according to police, by Aaron Corn, 18, about 3:30 a.m. Feb. 21 without Veloz’ permission.

Lisa Bennett Named Director Of Hospice

The entire article has no mention of things she may be better known for than a consulting service.

What is there to be ashamed of? I mean, being on the Pacific Grove city council is nothing to be embarrassed about.

Lisa Bennett is set to join the nonprofit Hospice Foundation of Monterey as its director of fund development.

The Princeton graduate has 22 years experience in fundraising and is a credentialed Certified Fundraising Executive. Bennett moved to Pacific Grove in 1990, then became the director of development and public relations at York School.

She also has her own consulting practice and served as an adjunct faculty member with the Fundraising School at Indiana University for 20 years.
