Think That Those Measure X Funds Are For Smooth Safe Streets?

Think again. Crosswalks, sidewalks and bike lanes. I thought bike lanes were the same as sidewalks.

The City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved the Pacific Grove Highway 68 corridor study and adopted the report’s recommended findings. The yearlong analysis of the city’s major thoroughfare was done to determine how to make it more pedestrian-friendly and suitable for all forms of transportation.

Launched in 2015, the 190-page report looked at ways to improve two streets that are part of the Holman Highway route through Pacific Grove; Forest Avenue from the city limit to Sunset Drive and Sunset Drive from Forest Avenue to Asilomar Avenue. Specifically, it addressed ways of implementing bike ways, sidewalks and making crossing improvements.

“It’s a very important opportunity for us to begin improving that corridor and these two streets, Sunset and Forest, to make them serve the community better,” said Councilman Robert Huitt.

Huitt said he hopes for the passage of Measure X, the transportation sales tax, because funding from the measure could help pay for the project.

Recycle The Cedar St Times

On Jan. 31, rePlanet announced it closed 191 recycling centers in California, citing declines in commodities pricing of aluminum and plastic, coupled with a rise in operating costs as a result of minimum wage increases and required health and workers’ compensation insurance.

California Redemption Value recycling centers in Monterey, Pacific Grove, Salinas, Prunedale, Marina and Del Rey Oaks closed, leaving centers at the Marina landfill, 14201 Del Monte Blvd., and near the Costco in Sand City, 801 Tioga Ave., as the two closest locations. The center in Sand City is a rePlanet location, closed Tuesdays and open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. the rest of the week.

Ted Terrasas, Monterey’s sustainability director, said city officials were surprised to find out about the closures earlier this week.

“The redemption centers are required to be put in place by the stores,” Terrasas said.

Traffic Calming

A just-released poll of Los Angeles residents found that 55 percent of respondents indicated their greatest concern was “traffic and congestion,” far ahead of “personal safety” — the next highest area of concern — at 35 percent.
So if their city government was working in their best interests, it would be doing something about automobile congestion.
It is. Unfortunately, it will make things worse.

Los Angeles’s recently adopted Mobility Plan 2035 would replace auto lanes in America’s congestion capital with bus and protected bike lanes, as well as pedestrian enhancements, despite heightening congestion for the vast majority who will continue to drive. Even the City’s Environmental Impact Report admitted “unavoidable significant adverse impacts” on congestion, doubling the number of heavily congested (graded F) intersections to 36 percent during evening rush hours.

Red Ferraris On Golf Course

Public Works superintendent Daniel Gho recommended councilmembers consider bringing The Legends of the Autobahn to the municipal golf links on Aug. 18, 2022. Gho said it would be a “full cost recovery special event,” meaning organizers would reimburse Pacific Grove for related costs.

The car show’s organizers are looking for a new venue at the same time Pacific Grove would like to replace the loss of a car auction that was held during Car Week on the 18th Hole of the city’s golf course. Worldwide Auctioneers informed P.G. it would not be returning to the city next year for the event, Gho said.
