Open House Signs Block Sidewalks

Must be though selling houses these days. But not as tough as navigating the sidewalks, say if one was in a wheelchair . . .

In Union City the hazardous signs are confiscated:

For the past four weekends, a city employee, working overtime, has patrolled streets in search of violating signs. On the first weekend, courtesy notices, explaining the city’s longstanding sign ordinance, were placed on the signs. Since then, the signs have been confiscated.

At least 50 of them – mostly free-standing signs directing home buyers to an open house – still are sitting in the city’s corporation yard, Public Works Director Mintze Cheng said. No fines have been levied against the violators.

The signs were becoming a safety issue, Cheng said. Clusters of free-standing “open house” signs block sidewalks, while others end up in the street, she said.

But real estate brokers say the policy makes it harder to sell homes.

Oh boo hoo for the real estate shysters.

Lets take out the ghetto sidewalk graffiti signs too. But instead of holding them captive at the city yard, burn them . .

Salinas Bans “Business Graffiti” Signs

Good move.

Letters From the Editor:

They are dangerous when you are trying to get out of a parking lot. They look tacky when driving through town. They line every main thoroughfare in town. One business on Main Street even has 4×8 signs.

I was in business for 35 years in Salinas, my first location being in the same strip mall that Kerr is located. I got business by advertising in the newspaper, direct mailings and word of mouth.

Downtown P.G. Looking Ugly?

Pacific Grove would be a better place if the city’s unsightly newspaper racks were replaced with uniform, less conspicuous ones. That’s the opinion of the city’s Beautification and Natural Resources Committee, which will tell the city council in February it should change its eight racks, a move which will cost P.G. about $4,000 per year for maintenance.

Take out the sandwich board signs, too.

Did Something Interesting Happen Here?

Spotted this sign, pimping the town to the trail walkers, surrey drivers and motorists that are not watching the road:

Real Estate Signs Targeted By Vandals

I have little sympathy for the land bandits. Sometimes you can’t walk on the sidewalk without navigating the barricades of tacky open house signs. The Keller-Williams sign pictured here is blocking the sidewalk.

Vandals have made the past couple of weeks at Patrick and Vicki Dwyer’s Real Estate Sign Service an extraordinarily busy time.

Some 50 signs have been destroyed throughout the county during the past three weeks, the Dwyers report.

It appears that vandals used a bat to whack the signs, breaking them apart. Other signs that may be too difficult to destroy were ripped out of the ground.
