1250 Pound Sunfish Dies At Aquarium

The 1,250-pound ocean sunfish, one of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s most popular attractions, was euthanized early Thursday.

Aquarium veterinarian Mike Murray said the fish was euthanized after it became listless and stopped eating for a week, spending most of its time at the bottom of the aquarium’s Outer Bay exhibit.

That’s about 10,000 tacos.

Hear What The Winter Tourists Come For

(Sacramento Bee)

Joke all you want about tourists from Modesto but they in my opinion are the most down to earth visitors and much more tolerable than L.A. refugees that end up wanting to move here.

They are looking for enriching experiences that don’t necessarily mean spending lots of money on big meals, paintings, fake country charm or pretentious hosts. They want to get away from home and go back with pictures and memories. Maybe a sweatshirt if they thought it was warm in the spring (hint: best souvenir sweatshirt is one from Mission Ranch, affordable and impressive).

Exploring Monterey during Winter

And there’s this: The tourists who crowd the peninsula in the high season will be absent. That means you’ll actually be able to tour the Monterey Bay Aquarium, find a parking space in Carmel, book a dinner reservation before 9:30 p.m. and ride on the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail without getting entangled in a six-bicycle pile-up.

Aquarium Employees To Help Staff Mvsevm

What could go wrong?

The Mvsevm

Workers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium will help staff the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History until the city can develop a long-term plan to hire employees and become profitable.
The staffing is necessary because the city, as part of a reorganization to save money, laid off the museum’s assistant curator and eliminated the museum director job, effective with the retirement of Paul Finnegan, who is leaving his post in January. “Some of the aquarium’s guest services people will be working the main floor of the museum,” city manager Jim Colangelo told The Pine Cone.

Squeezing Rent From Aquarium Not An Option?

City Attorney David Laredo said the aquarium contends that the city’s ability to set rental rates for the property it occupies is restricted and that it will contest any rental fee increase. The aquarium has proposed an extension of the lease for another 25 years, until Dec. 2, 2030.

All of the property is submerged land to which the city holds title, Laredo said.

The tidelands were deeded to the city by the state in the public trust, said Councilman Daniel Davis, not to be used for commercial purposes, and any revenues from piers, docks or similar leases would have to go to trust purposes and possibly to the state, not into the city general fund.

“The city,” said resident Lee Willoughby, “has some responsibility to charge a reasonable and equitable rent.” He said the aquarium “has also used our tidelands for collecting specimens.”

Aquarium Gives Free Admission To Locals This Week

In the holiday spirit, the Monterey Bay Aquarium once again will pick up the admission tab for all Monterey County residents from today through Dec. 9.

“It’s our thank you to the community for their support,” said Karen Jeffries, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit aquarium. “We have an incredible membership base and incredible regional support … and we’re very grateful for all of that.”

No Rent Increase For The Aquarium

To avoid what could be a lengthy and costly legal battle, the City of Pacific Grove is giving up the effort to get the Monterey Bay Aquarium to pay rent for the city-owned land it occupies.

“We would be fighting for years in court, even if we won, we might not be able to use the money the way we want anyway” said city manager Jim Colangelo.

That ís because Colangelo said the city could be bound by California State Lands Commission restrictions on how revenue can be generated from businesses that sit on
tidelands. The city’s intent was to use the higher rent from the aquarium for various city services, Colangelo said. About 20 percent of the aquarium complex sits in Pacific Grove, while the rest is in Monterey.

Aquarium Puts Great White Shark On Display – What Timing!

Great White Shark

The Monterey Bay Aquarium announced Tuesday that it placed a young white shark on public display, and a spokesman said it was “an unfortunate coincidence” the news came the same day a surfer was mauled by a white shark off Marina State Beach.

“We make our decision on when we move the animals, depending on how the animals are doing,” aquarium spokesman Ken Peterson said. “The timing is unfortunate.”

The young shark was brought to Monterey 24 days after it was caught accidentally in commercial fishing gear off Southern California.

Aquarium Evacuated After Vandalism Fills Exhibit With Fumes

The Monterey Bay Aquarium has been evacuated after someone apparently released a noxious substance in an exhibit area this afternoon.

Police officials said that at least 30 people said they were suffering from the effects of the spray. One employee was sent to a hospital for treatment. Hundreds of visitors and employees were moved out of the popular Cannery Row attraction in about 10 minutes, according to city officials.
