Better idea: bypass all the complicated water credit issues and send that toilet water straight to the new hotels.

So it must have been a shock to P.G. City Manager Ben Harvey to receive a letter from the state water board on May 16, stating that the board was holding back on the payment because the city’s plan might be a breach of contract.

The issue appears to be a discrepancy of interpretations stemming from the water board’s 2009 order to the Monterey Peninsula to stop using water from the Carmel River. One interpretation is that due to the order, P.G. cannot keep any new water credits for itself – they all have to go back to the river.

The Monterey County Health Department has issued a Beach Advisory for Lovers Point Beach in Pacific Grove and Monterey Municipal Beach

There are various sources of bacteria such as marine life (i.e. seals, otters, and birds) and other animals; rainfall runoff; storm drains; and human activity. Rainfall is associated with increased bacterial levels due to runoff particularly in the area of man-made and natural storm drains such as culverts, streams and rivers.

“We have built our reputation on network reliability, for Pacific Grove this is really about staying ahead of the curve for meeting demand on data growth,” said Heidi Flato, a spokeswoman for Verizon. “Looking at the data and how much traffic is coming out of the high school and surrounding neighborhood, there is a need to add capacity to our network to that location.”

But those who oppose the new wireless facility said it’s not needed and there’s not enough known about the health effects of this newer cell technology.

“We have a Wi-Fi system that totally handles all their needs to go online,” said Pacific Grove High School Principal Matt Bell, who also noted that currently, the reception is excellent and students overall are really only using their cellphones on breaks and at lunch time. “We also really have a duty to make school as safe as we can possibly make it and currently there are conflicting report of the safety of cell tower emissions.”

The mishandling of the failed luxury hotel project known as Project Bella ultimately cost Pacific Grove $100,000. That was the main finding of a recent Monterey County civil grand jury report investigating why the 160-room hotel development, which was proposed to replace the American Tin Cannery Outlets, failed to become a reality.

While Roufougar had also determined allegations that Harvey accepted paid airfare and other gifts from Domaine developer Ron Meer had no merit, the grand jury report looked deeper into Harvey’s part in a group membership into a private airline with his friend and sub-contractor of Domaine, Jared Ficker. Meer was also part of the membership.

Good to hear that all the natural history in the Mvsevm has not gone extinct like the bears.

a new project from the California Grizzly Research Network (www.calgrizzly.com), a group of researchers from UC Santa Barbara and the La Brea Tar Pits/Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, seeks to trace the state’s history and biological legacy using tiny fragments of grizzly bear bone.

Four skulls and skull fragments from the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History will provide valuable insight into historical grizzly bear diets, and may someday help connect California’s past with its future.

Newcomer Fischer Running For Mayor

In June of 2106 after declaring his run for mayor against Mayor Bill Kampe, Fischer pulled out of the race, citing that his views were too similar to Kampe’s to run against him.
Fischer said he wants to continue the council’s current policies and direction, which involves improvements to the city’s infrastructure, something he said he’s long emphasized.

The Monterey Police Department has seen an increase in property crimes in recent months, specifically automobile and residential burglaries,” police said.

Police believe there are two categories of thieves targeting Monterey: 1. a roving group that travels to Monterey, and 2. local criminals.

The roving groups “target areas that they know have financial means,” police said.

There were some arrests, among them:

May 21: Monterey Police Officers, with the assistance of the Seaside Police Department, arrested Zachary Thomas, 31, of Pacific Grove, in the 1100 block of Fremont, Seaside, for commercial burglary, possession of stolen property, and possession of a controlled substance.

May 23: Officers arrested Julia Natale, 51, of Monterey, in the 800 block of Archer, Monterey, for possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale, transportation of a controlled substance, being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and smuggling drugs into the jail.

Officers also arrested Ashley Beck, 30 of Pacific Grove, in the 800 block of Archer, for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Monterey Police Officers, with the assistance of the Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Team, Pacific Grove PD, Marina PD, Carmel PD, and the Drug Enforcement Agency served a search warrant in the 900 block of McClellan, Monterey. Officers arrested John Spataro, 47, of Monterey, for possession of heroin and possession of methamphetamine. Officers also arrested Gary Russo, 43, of Monterey, for possession of methamphetamine.

Mayor Kampe Not Running For Re-Election

Better find a decent pick for mayor before P.G. starts to look like Stockton.

He won in a landslide, and the four-year adventure turned into a 10-year journey, after winning the mayor’s seat two more times in 2014 and 2016.

The journey is now officially coming to an end, Kampe announced Tuesday, May 29, in an emailed statement.

He and his wife, Cheryl, are ready to do new things together, which they have postponed during this stint on the council.

Oh, and one steps up in favor turning P.G. into Stockton

Councilmember Rudy Fischer announced later the same day that he is running for mayor.
He said as mayor he would “pretty much continue the council’s current policies and direction.”

In response to an increase of vehicle and residential burglaries, the Monterey Police Department has created the Burglary and Theft Team and made 17 arrests in the past two months in connection to those crimes.

According to Hober, officers on the Burglary and Theft Team volunteer to work overtime on their days off.

“They’ll just go out and proactively try to develop information and find people who might be committing these property crimes,” he said. “A majority of those 17 arrests came from officers on the (Burglary and Theft Team) going out.”
