Stove Fire On Wave Street

Was someone drinking wine from Torelli’s and didn’t notice the fire?

The fire was reported shortly after 4 p.m., firefighters said, in the kitchen of a house at 470 Wave St.

Three engines and a ladder truck responded and the fire was confined to the kitchen, firefighters said. The blaze originated on the kitchen stove, which was removed from the house after the fire was put out. No one was injured, firefighters said.

Remodel from “Outer Bay” into “The Open Sea”. Notice that the Fish Jail is losing most of the Monterey Bay part of it’s name?

In what may be the mother of all fish tank spring-cleaning projects, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is putting the final touches on the overhaul of its Outer Bay tank — a 1 million gallon structure that holds more water than the other 90 tanks in the aquarium combined and ranks among the largest tanks in the United States. It’s all part of a $19 million transformation that re-opens to the public Saturday.

Know The Curfews, Kids

I think curfews are more to give cops a reason to stop bad behavior. No one is out hunting for kids out late.

Monterey, Salinas and Marina prohibit residents 18 and younger from being out in public after 11p.m. In Carmel, Pacific Grove, Seaside and King City, the witching hour is 10 p.m.

Sitting on a bench on Alvarado Street at 10:30 one recent night, Rachel Gillian, 14, of Monterey, said she was aware of the law. Had she crossed the border into Pacific Grove, she would have been breaking curfew.

Maritime Museum Of Monterey – What’s It For?

Has anyone actually been to the Maritime Museum then or now? I always felt that the history of Monterey could not be boxed in by four walls and a roof when the history is all out in the open. Visit the adobes, see the San Carlos Cathedral, check out Colton Hall. What kind of relevant insight would I get at a book signing or a concert?

Rocky internal goings-on have led to increased scrutiny from the city about whether the lease terms — which require a maritime and history center to be open nearly year-round — are being fulfilled.

“The City Council has a great concern about the long-term financial stability,” Meurer said.

Those sentiments ratcheted up again this week with the resignation of executive director John Bailey and the circulation of an anonymous email accusing current board president Tom Hood and others of steering museum work and contracts to friends.

Hood sounded optimistic about the museum’s future. He said the association has about $500,000 in cash on hand, and an upcoming events calendar with lectures, a book signing and, maybe, a concert.

“We have a head of steam going forward,” he said.

Four Killer Whales Spotted in Harbor

Tourists looking for In ‘N’ Out Burger.

Stemler noticed that the local harbor seals jumped out of the way quickly and scampered on to docks as if they were afraid of a predator in their midst.

A longtime captain at the Monterey Harbor said that having killer whales inside the breakwater is extremely rare, only happening twice in his entire career.

The whales did not stay long, after a dip in the harbor, they strolled back up Cannery Row and out to the pacific.

Bay View School Closes

New Monterey looks to be following in the footsteps of P.G. when it comes to fewer children in the population.

Bay View School Bye

It was a bittersweet day at Bay View, which closed Wednesday after 103 years in operation. Monterey Peninsula Unified District officials decided to close the high-performing school in 2009, partially to offset shrinking resources and partially to establish a K-5 and 6-8 middle schools configuration throughout the district. Bay View was K-6, and officials said it would not have enough students to make the small campus viable.

Students write goodbyes to the teacher on the board. They take photos of each other, the principal and the teachers, saying they don’t want to leave. But when 12:45 p.m. strikes, the halls become inundated with the banter of children as they leave Bay View for the last time.

Wharf Leases Deemed Legal

Wharf Signs

Willard tried to break the leases, which probably would have put people out of business, leading to Cannery Row style schlock taking over the wharf..

The council concluded the current leases “clearly state that the buildings are the property and responsibility of the lease holders.” The council said ownership “was properly negotiated as a part of the lease extensions in the early ’90s and was not a gift of public funds.”

Assistant City Manager Fred Cohn said the wharf businesses have ground leases from the city under which they essentially “rent the mud” beneath the wharf. The tenants are responsible for the pilings, decking and buildings, he said.

Teen Diver Deaths Ruled Accidental

The deaths of Stephen Anderson, 16, and Keegan Aiazzi, 17, both of Carson City, Nev. were caused by asphyxia due to ocean drowning, the coroner’s report stated. The teens drowned on April 9.

They said forensic inspection of their scuba diving gear showed there hadn’t been any failure to the systems. The gear, recovered from the ocean floor, was tested by Master Dive Repair Technician Ernest Bourne. It was tested in a laboratory and also in ocean conditions similar to what the teens would’ve experienced, the Coroner’s Unit said.
