Archivist, museum exhibit creator, costume maker, Web designer, historic activist, wry observer of human oddities—Pacific Grove’s Esther Trosow has one expansive resume. She’s also probably done more to preserve and celebrate the history of “America’s Last Hometown” than any one person.

“A love of John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts” brought Trosow to Pacific Grove in 1994, and within a few years she had developed the “Driving Tour of John Steinbeck’s Pacific Grove,” established 93950.com, a quirky portal Web site devoted to her new hometown, and been instrumental in convincing the City Council to change the name of High Street to Ricketts Row in honor of the legendary marine biologist whose original lab was on Fountain Avenue.

Lisa Bennett Appointed To Pacific Grove Council

“I have very high personal integrity,” Bennett told the council. “What you see is what you get.
Bennett has also served on the city’s Architectural Review Board. She has worked for 24 years in her consulting business, The Cornerstone Group, which deals with nonprofit agencies.

Sam The Sham Farr Calls Michael Moore His Hero

Walking up Independence Avenue, it is pointed out to Farr that the querulous filmmaker Michael Moore is standing on the next corner with a camera crew and a microphone.

Farr barrels across First Street and right into Moore’s sour mug. “How’s my hero?!” Farr asks.

Moore, with his typical hunched-down head and glum expression, tells Farr, “We’re not looking for guys like you, if you get my drift.”

Ignoring the invitation to scram, Farr lays it on thick for the camera. He runs the show for a few minutes and introduces himself to a Marine that Moore has with him.

Farr walks away from Moore unscathed. In fact, he is beaming. He says he’d just as soon have gone into filmmaking as a young man if he’d known about it.

Sam Farr is a career politician son of a career politician. He has not had to work a day in his life. He’d have never made it as a filmmaker.

People still enjoy music as a soundtrack to their nighttime endeavors, but now the music is a world away from the melodic tinkling of the ivories that used to be the standard in entertainment. Popular people want popular music, and that”s generally loud music: DJs spinning something to dance to, or bands playing songs individuals can share or get lost in together. And the bars and clubs that can give it to them see more business because of it.

So when Bosso”s owner, Tony Annigoni, brought a DJ into his piano room on Wednesday nights, he was following the most basic of entrepreneurial tenets and making his mousetrap a bit more attractive. It worked. Wednesday night business jumped. But the venture went sour after a few months when the city fined him $250 for conducting live entertainment business without a proper permit.
