The Pie Man Cometh – Jobs Cut In P.G.

Announcements of planned layoffs were given Monday to around 15 Pacific Grove city employees, including department managers, by City Manager Jim Colangelo.

Employees received e-mails Friday asking them to meet with Colangelo on Monday, when they received the news, said Recreation Director John Miller, one of those who got notice.

Three positions would be permanently eliminated, Colangelo said, while others affected will be offered other jobs with the city, “admittedly at a lower pay rate.” The layoffs and reorganization should save the city around $500,000, he said.

John Denver Memorial Dedicated

“We have been lobbying with Pacific Grove City Council for 10 years to get this memorial plaque,” Cynthia Doe, the group’s president, said today. “We felt it was the right thing to do for the right reasons.

The beachside dedication ceremony that began at 11 a.m. was followed by a reception.

For those wondering just where the plaque ended up at, check back soon. LighthouseAvenue.com will locate it if it truly exists, and hopefully before the Angry Old People attempt to hide it . . .

Update – All hints say that it will be on the small beach in a turnout, where vigils are held. A piece of driftwood with the singer’s name carved in it is in the approximate location.

KSCO Owner Puts Station On The Block

Dang. KSCO has the best signal to hear Coast To Coast in P.G.

Coast To Coast

” . .’I’m getting out of broadcasting. KSCO is going to be for sale,'” said owner Michael Zwerling, recounting the conversation for listeners during his “Saturday Special” show. “You know when it’s time to move on”

KSCO has become a powerhouse of local news, known for reliable traffic reports and fish raps, as well as its charismatic on-air personalities. Zwerling said he considers his employees his family.

But the station — with its right-leaning voice, Fox News updates and Rush Limbaugh commentaries — is not without its critics. However, Zwerling says he tried to present a broad cross-section of news and views, including an attempt to broadcast Air America programming on Central Coast airwaves that failed earlier this year.

The Tax Measures Will Be On Ballot

Pacific Grove’s three municipal tax measures can remain on the Nov. 6 ballot, according to a Monterey County Superior Court ruling.

Judge Robert O’Farrell heard arguments on the tax measures Thursday, and Friday threw out a challenge to Measure P on the municipal ballot brought by Monterey attorney Carl Mounteer against county Registrar of Voters Linda Tulett.

Go for it. Pay the taxes and retain some city services or cripple the town.

Aint More Tourists Grand?

P.G. caved and paid the $100,000 ransom to the Visitors’ Bureau. So the tourists will once again be advised that P.G. exists.

On a 5-2 vote, the council referred the street signing project — which proposes to route traffic up Grand Avenue from Ocean View Boulevard to Lighthouse Avenue in order to move traffic through downtown — to the city’s Beautification Committee.

Residents of Grand Avenue, here’s to your street becoming a tourist path – Why Grand? There’s a tight bottleneck at the library. Or is that “beautification” include paving over the park so the tourists can make their way to the phony charm for sale?

Accused Molester Linked to NAMBLA

After court appearances, lots of stories about the alleged PG child molester.

David Stamm

Stamm, the owner of a local miniature golf course and an indoor batting cages business, faced preliminary hearing today on eight counts of child molestation, child pornography and attempting to dissuade a witness. The North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) is a group that advocates “benevolent” sexual interaction between men and boys.

During the incidents, according to testimony, Stamm attempted to convince the youth that he was gay.

From KSBW

Prosecutors also filed an allegation that Stamm used pornography in the commission of a crime.

If Stamm is found guilty on that allegation, he would not be eligible for probation. Instead, he would go straight to prison, where he faces a sentence of more than 11 years.

From the Herald

The owner of a local miniature golf course and an indoor batting cages operation was ordered to stand trial today on 13 felony counts, including child molestation, possession of child pornography and attempting to dissuade a witness.

Attack Of The Old People!!

People repeatedly went to the podium and spoke of their disgust that (shudder) their neighborhood is being taken over by a senior home.

Where was the outcry when 17th street or houses on Lighthouse Avenue were taken out of circulation? If the new residents of homes on Spazier were minorities these comeheres would be attacked. But it’s Old People, so it’s ok . .

Residents said the purchases are an expansion of the retirement home’s commercial activity into their neighborhood in violation of city zoning ordinances.

City Attorney David Laredo said the city couldn’t halt a property purchase, but could halt any improper use of the property, such as extending retiree services from the “main campus” of Canterbury Woods to residents of the houses.

Moth Spraying Brings Illness?

But residents of Monterey and surrounding areas told council members they and their friends have come down with aches, pains, sniffles, sore throats, fevers and influenza-like symptoms in the past week since the spraying took place.

Air Force Maj. Tim Wilcox, a student at the Naval Postgraduate School, said his 11-month-old son got sick the morning after his neighborhood was sprayed Sept. 10 and got worse as the week went by until he was admitted to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for severe respiratory problems.

“I don’t know if the spraying was the cause,” he said. “But it’s a pretty dang good coincidence that it happened when it happened.”

Several adults complained of itching, sneezing, headaches and other problems.

Lets Go To The Beach For The Tsunami Test

The National Weather Service will conduct a limited communications test of the Tsunami Warning System along coastal California, Oregon and Washington between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Should significant real-life seismic activity occur, however, the test will be canceled.

The West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, will broadcast a special test tsunami warning message. The message will be clearly labeled as a test.
