School Alerts Parents To Horrific Predator

Eh, it was a dead deer that was killed by a mountain lion. Quick to send out the warnings, except when human predators are there all the time.

On Oct. 1O, Pacific Grove Unified School District sent an alert to parents that staff at Forest Grove Elementary School that morning had discovered a dead dear on
campus. It was apparent that the deer was the victim of a
predator. “This morning, school site staff discovered a deceased deer on the Forest Grove Elementary campus, behind K-Wing,” PGUSD noted. “The scene indicated possible wildlife activity, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife has been notified.”
Children were not at school when the attack occurred,
and Pacific Grove students are on fall break this week.

A mountain lion made an appearance in Pacific Grove over the weekend. When officers responded to a call of a sighting, the beast made a break for it and was last seen running up the street in the Del Monte Park neighborhood, bordered by Buena Vista and Benito avenues, in P.G.

On Sunday afternoon, P.G. police were notified of a mountain lion sighted in the backyard of a residence. Officers responded and were shown a picture that was taken of the lion by the reporting party. According to the P.G. police, while officers were checking the surrounding property, the reporting party saw the lion run up the street.

P.G. Cougar Gets Evicted

Frightened resident calls 911 to report a wild animal.

Mountain Lion If Attacked

On Monday morning, residents were surprised when they spotted a cougar climbing up trees and over the rooftops of homes along Acacia Street, Eardley Avenue, and Line Street. The mountain lion chose a large oak tree to lounge in.

Some observers were nervous, because a day care with small children inside was nearby. “When I called 911, the first dispatch operator told me to call a biologist! I kept calling back,” resident John Kendrick said.

Pacific Grove police officers were eventually dispatched, and wildlife wardens decided to tranquilize it.

“The mountain lion was unharmed and transported away from the scene for relocation,” Acting Police Chief Rory Lakind said.

Mountain Lion If Attacked

Pacific Grove police are warning residents to be alert about2015 mountain lions.
Within the last two weeks, three deer were found dead. Police said the attacks happened along Ocean View Blvd. and on a trail near the American Tin Cannery.

If you come face to face with a mountain lion, don’t run, make noise, and try to look as big as you can.

The exhibition also will use cougar life-mounts and skeletons, research tools and wildlife photography to tell the story of how mountain lions and humans co-exist.

The museum is seeking mountain lion photos and stories from the community. If you have a story or photo to share, contact exhibitions curator Annie Holdren at holdren@pgmuseum.org.

NOAA’s Parking Lot Lights Are For Safety?

First time they said safety, robberies and mountain lions will be deterred by them. Now we hear they are for protection against terrorists. What’s really going on in that seemingly innocent fish & weather office?

Lights of pain

There’s another reason NOAA wants the facility illuminated, according to Watson.

“The feds claim that the lighting is needed to protect the station from potential terrorist attack/vandalism,” Watson wrote.

Mountain Lion If Attacked

Last month, a Pacific Grove police officer on patrol spotted a lion just after midnight on Sunset Avenue near Congress Avenue, said Animal Control Officer Elizabeth Yeo of the city’s police department.

The animal was crossing Sunset, “stopped and looked and took off,” she said.

Hence my stakeout. It was part of my research to find out if the reports meant more mountain lions were wandering onto the Peninsula. Might the sight of the stealthy carnivores that are at the top of their food chain become more routine near our urban homes?
