Union Disturbs Peace In Name Of What?

Last round the workers got 90 cents an hour over the term of the contract.

Union Work

scores of union members armed with whistles, drums, placards, megaphones and leafets shouted bilingual phrases and taunts as they circled the historic center. They were not pleased with concessionaire Aramark’s proposal for a five year freeze on wages! This action, if implemented, would keep the pay of Asilomar’s house keeping employees at $12.74 an hour until 2016!

And the union protests the loss of dues labor policies

Labor unions for hotel workers make no sense. Is there an apprentice program for maids?

“During negotiations, a group of employees decided they didn’t want to be represented by the union and they circulated a petition that was signed by the majority of our employees,” Levenfeld explained.

“Based on the petition, we notified the union that the employees withdrew their recognition of the union. The union wasn’t pleased and made a series of accusations against us that we believe are false.”

Levenfeld said the inn has replaced the union’s health care plan for its employees with one that is fully paid by the employer and replaced the union’s retirement plan with a 401k option.

Aramark Gets Asilomar Deal

Wonder if they can kick out the 483 union?

Aramark Parks & Destinations will officially take over operation of Asilomar Conference Grounds on Sept. 14, said an executive of the company it is replacing.

General Manager Patrick Sheridan of Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts, which has operated Asilomar for the past 10 years, said DNC had unsuccessfully challenged the award. Aramark was the only other bidder on the contract, said Roy Stearns of State Parks.

DNC has about 240 employees working at Asilomar, Sheridan said, and Aramark has committed to retaining as many of them as possible. Operations through this summer will be “business as usual,” he said, as DNC and Aramark negotiate the transition.

Teachers Union Dues – Where They Go

For or against it is a personal choice, but what does this have to do with education, or the advancement & support of teachers?

Labor unions are no longer relevant to labor. They exist only to give the union administrators a paycheck, and money into political campaigns.

California’s largest teacher’s union has given another $1 million to defeat a Nov. 4 ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in the state.

The contribution recorded Tuesday makes the California Teachers Association the largest institutional donor to the No on 8 campaign. CTA also gave $250,000 in August to Equality for All, a coalition of gay advocacy and civil rights groups opposing Proposition 8.

Carpenters Union Loses Another One

Monterey County Superior Court Judge Robert O’Farrell dismissed the suit filed by Local Union 605 Oct. 2. The lawsuit claimed DMC Construction did not show proof a portion of its subcontractors for the stadium project are disabled veterans, which is required by the state.

“Essentially the union didn’t really have the information to back their claims,” said DMC general manager Mark Lord.

Unions can’t fund themselves by providing useful, positive reasons to exist. So they turn to suing people and misleading workers. That’s where the dues are going.

Breaker Stadium 6 Million

Carpenters Union – Lost 51% if certification elections in 2006.

In a suit filed Aug. 5, Carpenters Local Union 605 contends DMC Construction — the firm hired by PGUSD for the stadium redo — did not show proof that a portion of its subcontractors for the project are disabled veterans, which is required by the state.

DMC general manager Mark Lord said Thursday there had been a clerical error in DMC’s paperwork for the bid, but that matter had been resolved.

Who Runs Pacific Grove? Part II

The city leaders or the labor unions? Looking for day to day representation or benefits and unions are slow to respond. But threaten them with loss of dues and they bump the performance up to “meets expectations”.

Laborers Local 270 in Santa Cruz filed the complaint after the City Council’s adoption on Oct. 3 of a city reorganization plan developed by City Manager Jim Colangelo.

The charges contend that Colangelo’s plan deleted 21 full-time and two part-time employee positions while adding 23 lower-paying full-time and two half-time positions.

The changes were made without prior notice to the union or offering an opportunity for union members to meet and confer with management over the changes. A settlement conference has been set Feb. 26 in Oakland.

Union Members – Are They That Dumb?

A national survey released Monday by the AFL-CIO reports that 49 percent of homeowners with adjustable rate mortgages admit they do not know how their mortgage adjusts and 73 percent do not know how much their mortgage payment will be after the adjustment.

Well, they give away a part of every paycheck and probably don’t know where that goes, they tend to vote Democrat – so not being aware of their mortgage bomb aint surprising.

Union Fights P.G. Job Cuts

Can’t let the cash strapped city control the flow of money to the union . .

A union representing Pacific Grove city employees plans to challenge announced layoffs that will affect its members.

Laborers Local 270 president Tim McCormick, representative for the Santa Cruz-based local’s public employee section, said he plans to attend the Pacific Grove City Council meeting Wednesday to argue that the city doesn’t have the right to cut its members from the staff without negotiating with the union first.
