End Of P.G. Fire Department?

The council has before it a resolution approving a contract between the two cities for fire service effective Dec. 16 that resulted from three years of feasibility studies of a merger, according to Pacific Grove Fire Chief Andrew Miller.

Monterey, in general, pays more in salary for similar fire department work, he said, but Pacific Grove will save costs because fewer firefighters would be required at its station and the combined department would be able to draw resources from three fire stations in Monterey.

Should have happened years ago – about the time of the Pebble Beach fire on Huckleberry Hill.

Fire Department Merger Being Considered

Three cities on the Monterey Peninsula are one step closer to a merger that could save them a collective $1.3 million a year.

The cities of Pacific Grove, Carmel and Monterey are all considering consolidating their fire departments into one.

The cities combined currently spend more than $3.5 million each year on firefighting. But if the three departments merged, the cost for fire protection would drop to around $2.2 million total, the company reviewing the plan said.

About time. Just put more resource at the worker level and eliminate some administration.

Phil Bowhay Flashback – P.G. Fire Horn

Our punctuation in P.G. was the fire horn. Mounted on top of City Hall, which was also the fire station in those days, it was part of our identity, our signature of sound, unlike anything else in Western civilization. It was harsh, raucous, insistent and serious in intent.

In Pacific Grove, the horn was part of the fine volunteer tradition. We all had posted in our homes the code telling the approximate location of the fire. “One, One, Three” meant Forest and Lighthouse, etc., and there was a chalkboard in front of the station with the address of the blaze.

Living on Grand Avenue, the horn was the lunchtime alarm. I’d champion to keep it, but I’m sure some of the Come Heres would object.
