Officer Larry Starkey of the California Highway Patrol said Phillip Johnson was westbound on Holman Highway about 11:20 p.m. when his motorcycle and a Nissan pickup collided head-on.
The driver of the pickup, a 43-year-old man from Seaside, apparently lost control just west of Scenic Drive, crossed the center line and continued into the path of Johnson’s motorcycle, said Starkey.
The force of the impact threw Johnson to the road. He died at the scene.

The Pie Man Cometh – Jobs Cut In P.G.
Announcements of planned layoffs were given Monday to around 15 Pacific Grove city employees, including department managers, by City Manager Jim Colangelo.
Employees received e-mails Friday asking them to meet with Colangelo on Monday, when they received the news, said Recreation Director John Miller, one of those who got notice.
Three positions would be permanently eliminated, Colangelo said, while others affected will be offered other jobs with the city, “admittedly at a lower pay rate.” The layoffs and reorganization should save the city around $500,000, he said.
The Tax Measures Will Be On Ballot
Pacific Grove’s three municipal tax measures can remain on the Nov. 6 ballot, according to a Monterey County Superior Court ruling.
Judge Robert O’Farrell heard arguments on the tax measures Thursday, and Friday threw out a challenge to Measure P on the municipal ballot brought by Monterey attorney Carl Mounteer against county Registrar of Voters Linda Tulett.
Go for it. Pay the taxes and retain some city services or cripple the town.

Snakes On A Popcorn Tub!
. . . someone left Flash’s tank open a crack after giving him fresh water. Flash escaped and the family spent hours looking for him, to no avail.
Sure enough, the snake in the popcorn tub was none other than Flash.

Aint More Tourists Grand?
P.G. caved and paid the $100,000 ransom to the Visitors’ Bureau. So the tourists will once again be advised that P.G. exists.

On a 5-2 vote, the council referred the street signing project — which proposes to route traffic up Grand Avenue from Ocean View Boulevard to Lighthouse Avenue in order to move traffic through downtown — to the city’s Beautification Committee.
Residents of Grand Avenue, here’s to your street becoming a tourist path – Why Grand? There’s a tight bottleneck at the library. Or is that “beautification” include paving over the park so the tourists can make their way to the phony charm for sale?

Accused Molester Linked to NAMBLA
After court appearances, lots of stories about the alleged PG child molester.

Stamm, the owner of a local miniature golf course and an indoor batting cages business, faced preliminary hearing today on eight counts of child molestation, child pornography and attempting to dissuade a witness. The North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) is a group that advocates “benevolent” sexual interaction between men and boys.
During the incidents, according to testimony, Stamm attempted to convince the youth that he was gay.
From KSBW
Prosecutors also filed an allegation that Stamm used pornography in the commission of a crime.
If Stamm is found guilty on that allegation, he would not be eligible for probation. Instead, he would go straight to prison, where he faces a sentence of more than 11 years.
From the Herald
The owner of a local miniature golf course and an indoor batting cages operation was ordered to stand trial today on 13 felony counts, including child molestation, possession of child pornography and attempting to dissuade a witness.
Attack Of The Old People!!
People repeatedly went to the podium and spoke of their disgust that (shudder) their neighborhood is being taken over by a senior home.
Where was the outcry when 17th street or houses on Lighthouse Avenue were taken out of circulation? If the new residents of homes on Spazier were minorities these comeheres would be attacked. But it’s Old People, so it’s ok . .
Residents said the purchases are an expansion of the retirement home’s commercial activity into their neighborhood in violation of city zoning ordinances.
City Attorney David Laredo said the city couldn’t halt a property purchase, but could halt any improper use of the property, such as extending retiree services from the “main campus” of Canterbury Woods to residents of the houses.

Moth Spraying Brings Illness?
But residents of Monterey and surrounding areas told council members they and their friends have come down with aches, pains, sniffles, sore throats, fevers and influenza-like symptoms in the past week since the spraying took place.
Air Force Maj. Tim Wilcox, a student at the Naval Postgraduate School, said his 11-month-old son got sick the morning after his neighborhood was sprayed Sept. 10 and got worse as the week went by until he was admitted to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for severe respiratory problems.
“I don’t know if the spraying was the cause,” he said. “But it’s a pretty dang good coincidence that it happened when it happened.”
Several adults complained of itching, sneezing, headaches and other problems.

Like A Poof! The Last Gay Bar Shuts Down

The Lighthouse Bar and Grill in Monterey closed its doors for good Saturday night, ending a 10-year stint as Monterey County’s only full-time night spot for local gays and lesbians.
Greg Moreno, who bought the bar about two years ago with his friend, Bert Orosco, said the business has been struggling, while the customer base has been dwindling.
The closure may be a sign of the times. Gays and lesbians say their numbers aren’t dwindling in Monterey County, but more of them say they feel comfortable in any social situation and therefore don’t feel compelled to hang out exclusively in one place, while others are more likely to connect socially on the Internet.
Man Accused Of Beating Day Laborer Was From P.G.
Glenn Blevins was found mentally incompetent to stand trial this month in connection with an attack on a day laborer on Fort Ord. Psychiatrist Taylor Fithian concluded paranoid schizophrenia had left the 27-year-old unable to understand the court proceedings and help with his own defense.
He was transferred from Forest Grove Middle School in Pacific Grove to a “therapeutic school” at Gambetta Middle School in Castroville. Doctors first tried antidepressants and later, after diagnosing him as bipolar, lithium.
Neither worked well, Joyce Blevins said, because he had been misdiagnosed. At the time, she said, doctors did not believe schizophrenia could present itself in young children, a school of thought that is now changing.
Her son eventually made his way to Pacific Grove High School, where he was kicked out for threatening a teacher and the principal. He did not graduate, though he later earned his equivalency degree.
